Have been playing with the Pro V1 since it first hit the market. Over the last 12 months I have been generating a lot more spin and this has in turn been ripping the Pro V1 apart (lot of scuff marks). I have tried a few balls hoping to achieve a softer feel and something that last longer than the Pro V1. Well, I just played 18 holes with the Taylormade TP Red and I am very impressed with its feel, spin around the greens and durability. Also noticed that I didn't appear to slice the ball as much as the Pro V1? Don't know what that is all about but for me I am now a TP Red player after swearing that I would keep playing the Pro V1 until they stop making them. Try one and see the difference.

Model Reviewed: Taylormade TP Black

Let me start by saying I've never written a review for ANY golf equipment ever before. This is the first time I felt compelled. The TP Black is just that good.

I realize everyone's swing is different, and matching your ball to your swing is important. But in my case, this is by far the best ball I've ever played, and I've played many.

After two rounds with this ball, I find I'm getting more distance off the tee than a Callaway HX Hot (my previous longest ball), combined with the spin of a Pro V on approach shots. My drives were at least 5-10 yds longer than usual - launches high, hangs there, then rolls out well.

With short irons, my approach shots were backing up 3-4 feet, and my mid to long irons were one hop and stop 2-3 feet later. Even my fairway woods stopped on the green.

Value - I got two dozen from a local shop on sale for $55 total. You can't beat that for a premium ball.

You've got to try this ball.

In the junior tour that I'm in, when you register every year, they give you a sleeve of balls with the logo on it. This year it happened to be the tp red. I had gotten a sleeve of the tp black after finding one on a course and loving it. But today on labor day, I had finally after having the balls for about 6 months tried the tp red with the logo on it ( i was afraid of losing them). What can i say, I absolutely loved it. The distance off the tees, how low the spin was, and how great the feel was.

I tend to draw the shot in a little bit, and I loved the tp black because i could boom it off the tee, but with the red i was always in the fairway.

Well, I tried the B330-S and was rewarded with great preformancce, so I thought I'd try a couple more premium balls. Got sleeve of TP Black and a sleeve of Nike One Platinum. Played the the TP Black on the front 9. (and later on the last 4 holes after trying the Nike). The TP Black is the longest ball I can ever remember hitting. It was not quite as straight for me as the B330_S on drives, but never once flared into trouble...just kind of tailed off a little with my fade. Sits on greens and stops for me. Great putting ball too, not mushy at all. I felt it was a little firmer feeling on the driver than the 330-S, but this gave it a satisfying impact feel. I really like this ball. It's extremely long, and you can fire right at the flag without fear of run-through. As I said I played it on front nine and then after I switched to the Nike ONE Plat., I switched right back after 4 holes. I suppose the Nike is a great ball, but for me it can't hang with the B330-S and the TP Black. (the NIKE ONE seemed a club shorter and felt firmer). I'm going to go with the B330-S for awhile because it's just tad straighter for me. But, for you non-power faders out there...the TP Black has got to be heaven.

I had been playing the nike powersoft (green box) for three years, but just this year, Nike made the dimples bigger--not the same ball anymore. Also, my home course changed, and I was lacking any kind of spin on approach shots. So I tried these balls. My first 9 holes with these, I loved them. They were the softest ball I've ever felt. They spinned adaquately around the greens, and putted softly too. But it wasn't until the back that it occured to me that I had lost ten yards with every club. Do not buy these balls, as you lose 10-20 yards of distance, and the balls don't even spin as much as a Prov1.

I actually like this ball a lot and will use it as long as it's on sale (which shouldn't be a problem considering it's a fairly unpopular ball).

I think I like the Red ball for all the reasons most people don't...it DOESN'T spin a whole lot. I'm a high spin player, meaning that I have a problem with having the ball NOT back up on me. The TP Red has just the right amount of spin within 100 yards that I don't have to hit half-wedges all the time to control the spin. The TP Red will usually back up about 6 inches to a foot consistently, instead of the 4-5 ft. with the Pro V1x.

The feel is a bit firmer than the Pro V1x, but not as hard as the HX Tour or B330. I personally like this since it's not mushy nor too clicky.

Finally, I noticed that the TP Red ball flight is fairly consistent. I hit a draw about 95% of the time, and this ball consistently gives me that sweet 3 to 4 yard draw...not a 15 yard hook. Again, this is probably due to the low-spin characteristic of this ball.

I would highly recommend this ball. Play well.

Only played one round with it. So far, the ball seems long, but they seem hard. I didn't feel like I flushed one all day but they were going pretty far. The ball lacks good feel. They have too hard of a feel for me. Played with a Pro V1 next to it and Pro V1 is best ball out. Much better feel especially around the greens and with the putter. For the price I paid they are a good ball.

After reading in depth about the new 2008 TaylorMade TP Black balls (longest distance w/high spin for 90 mph swing- GOLF magazine) I decided to give them a try. I have been playing Callaway HXTour for the last year and love them here in Las Vegas because they stick so well on our hard greens.
Following an operation a couple of years ago and being 56 years old now I've lost 20 yards on my drives and had just about given up on ever hitting over 270 ever again without a downhill, downwind hole. I use a stock TaylorMade 10.5 degree stiff shaft Burner driver which I swing around 95 mph and almost always keep in play, but I sure missed the "good ol' days" of occasionally busting one 290...
Anyway, I teed up the TP Black in calm conditions this last week and all I can say is "WOW!" The 7 drives I hit the fairway with averaged 274 yards in length! That's about a 15 yard increase from my normal distance! It's hard to believe, but I have to say that for once the hype on a golf product seems to be true.
I must say however that I didn't find the spin to be quite as good as the HX Tour, but overall I'll take the club-and-a-half more distance and reduced but still reasonable stopping power in most cases. I did have one bad experience flushing an 8-iron 160 and having it bounce and roll another 45 feet, but to be honest, the green did slope slightly from the hole to the back of the green that time and it might have had just a hint of a breeze behind it, too. I'll just have to play it a few more rounds and see more shots to reserve my final loyalty between the two, but Boy, that distance is hard to resist!
For sure, if your greens are a little softer than our baked-hard desert ones, then these are just runaway winners.
You've just gotta try 'em, what a blast! I can't wait to play with my buddies next time, they don't know I've got a new secret weapon to spring on them. Shhhh- I'm saying that I've been hitting the gym...

This was cited as a low compression ball (70) with good spin and distance. I was not impressed. Even though it is lower compression I didn't think it was that soft. It did spin but would still release a little bit instead of " hop and stop". If you are looking for a soft feeling tour ball with a good amount of spin and above average distance I would recommend the Srixon Z-URS
