I bought these clubs when my wife and I started a family and my game started to suffer. I have owned Titleist 962s, Ben Hogan Apex PCs, Lynx Black Cats and Ping Eye 2 (still own these!). However, for game improvement and help for an infrequent golfer the XL 2000s have been excellent. As noted, they aren't made anymore, but they are a real value now and the technology is still current. Not a Miss Universe candidate, but what performance! I sometimes think I would like to check out the latest Callaways and/or Cleveland irons, but these irons will help me get back to the next level.

Over 3 years with these clubs...all I can say is that I'm glad I switched to a set of 2006 Callaway Big Berthas. I know golf is all about understanding the swing, feeling the flow ~ But when you're an occational hack like me who loves the game for what it is at the moment, trust in your equipment is paramount. I don't know what it is about standing over the ball with a Top Flite club in my hand (I know, value, quality, blah, blah, blah) it just never instilled the confidence (read ~ technology) I needed. These irons can be described in one word, inconsistent. Three years, scores of 100+. Twelve rounds with the BB 06 irons, 10 rounds breaking 100, with the low score being 91 on a course with a slope of 127.

I have been playing with these irons for the past two years. I have been in the low 90's for a while now and I want to break into the 80's. That's not going to happen by changing to a different set of irons. I looked into adams gt and wilson, but I really didn't see any difference. For reference, I play my 7-pw pretty straight and I fade my 6 when I'm trying to really get yardage.

I originally purchased the xl2000 irons with med graphite shafts on Ebay for around $220.00 (great price at the time). I used the clubs for about 4 years and loved them. Unfortunately I got caught up in the hype and bought a set of Callaway Big Bertha irons and sold my xl2000's on Ebay. Don't get me wrong, the Big Berthas were good irons, but the xl2000's were just as good. I used the Big Bertha's for about a year, then my entire golf bag was stolen out of my vehicle. I needed to buy a new set of clubs. I got on Ebay and to my delight, I found a set of xl2000's exactly like the ones I had owned for 99 bucks ! Like so many other reviewers have stated, these are truly the best irons you can purchase for the cost. It's a shame these irons were discontinued. The only xl2000 iron I would not recommend is the lob wedge. There is something not quite right about the design of the sole and leading edge. The Momentus Short Game Wizard is the best lob wedge I have ever used. Customer Service not used Similar Products Used: Callaway Big Bertha irons |

The lighter weight head makes getting the ball heading toward the target a lot easier than many other clubs. Extremely good feel and accurate with 6-7-8-9 irons. Longer irons or hitting out of heavier grass not quite as pleasant an experience. Failing to strike the ball well will usually lead to a toe or hosel-shot that squirts off to the right. The size and weight of the clubs is also great for ball strikers who hit the ball forward in their stance on shaped-shots. A very nice feel, great materials and workmanship makes this an ideal set of irons for those shooting better than bogey golf, and/or having a 90+ swing speed. Customer Service Never Used. Top-Flite XL 2000
Even though this model is no longer produced (new) by Top Flite, and this review thread is a bit out of date, I thought I'd add a quick review. I recently purchased an unused set of these clubs from a private seller on craigslist. I'd been looking for a good set of game improvement irons to temporarily replace my older set of Toney Penna's, which I felt were too advanced for me, since I'm a high handicapper (20-25). I perused eBay and online classifieds for clubs in my price range, about a hundred dollars or so(used). After sifting through the results a bit, I then looked up the clubs I found here on Golf Review. When I came across the XL 2000s, I was very impressed with all the positive reviews. I went ahead and bought the set, 3-PW, regular steel shafts, with a black leather XL 2000 tour bag, for $125. I have not been disappointed. I'm currently playing the 5-PW, with a Dunlop hybrid replacing my 3 & 4 irons. I cannot stress enough how forgiving these clubs are, and how straight and true their ball flight is. I typically hit a slight fade with mid-irons (4-8), and a slight pull-draw with my shorter clubs (9-LW). With the XL 2000s, I'm now hitting my 5-8 dead straight, with almost no badly offline mis-hits (I'd say maybe 2 in 20). You just don't make many mistakes with these irons. I've dropped about 2 strokes a round since switching over, and I find that my confidence has increased for longer second and third shots, especially if I've hit a poor tee shot. Why just today I shot seven over for 9 holes, reaching the last 2 greens in regulation (370 and 319) Hole number 8 was a drive and an 8 iron from 125, and number 9 was a 3 wood and a 6 iron from 150. I ended up 6-7 feet from the pin in both cases, thanks to these Top Flites. Fairway lies or out of the rough, level stance or uneven, the larger cavity and solid head design always swing even and smooth. I've lost a bit of the "feel" that the Penna's have (they're forged, and small, with a very shallow cavity), but it's a small sacrifice for consistent results. And distance has only suffered maringally, maybe 5 yards. I'm sold. This club is just about the best all-around compromise for reliability, workmanship, playability, looks, and price. Let me comment for a second further on the look of the heads. One reason I've had trouble switching to a game improvement iron is the chunky, clunky look so many of them have. Overly thick toplines, yawning cavities, super wide soles -- a lot of them are just plain ugly. And if you want something better looking, like the Mizuno MX-23's, or the Titleist CB's, then you've got to pay a premium price. Even a used set is three hundred bucks or so. With Top Flite you seem to get it all, quality without the corresponding price tag. I also play Top Flite woods; I've got the full Intimidator set, 1-3-5. The 3 wood is just about my favorite club to hit, long and straight (180-220), with a wonderful muted thwack. I have to say, Top Flite is just about the best bang for the buck in the current club selection. Thanks to everyone who posted before me, I might have passed these up if not for you! What a missed opportunity that would have been.

XL2000 Regular Steel
I bought these based on teh reviews here and the review in GCR. These are very easy to use, but if your swing is WAY off then these won't save you. However, if you play teh ball a little further back in your stance, to ensure you are hitting DOWN, they pick up and send the ball good distances and pretty straight. 3 iron and (optional) 2 iron are quite long and easy to use if you don't try to SMASH the ball (just an easy swing like all the intructors recommend). Top Flite XL 2000 Stiff Steel
Purchased these without any range trail based on the fact that I was after irons with a large cavity and that they were offered as 11 irons (2I - LW) for the price of 9 irons which was cheap considering that top line clubs in Australia are >A$1200. The large cavity and diamond sole make them very easy to hit from any lie. Probably half a club extra distance due to the stronger loft angles, resulting in the need for the mid wedge at 52 degrees as the pitching wedge and sand wedge lofts are 48 and 56 degrees respectively. Shots generally don't have much feel unless you hit one out of the sweet spot as it will go an extra club length. Easy enough to work the ball in both directions. Long irons are easy to hit due to their offset, while the SW and LW are a bit chunky but still work fine. These clubs have reduced my handicap from 25 to 13 through fortnightly play over two years. Playing off single figures is about getting up and down around the green. Recommended game improvement irons with high handicap players getting the most benefit. I am a high handicapper and bought these irons in December 2002 to replace my beginner set. I have now played with these for approx. 1 1/2 years, and am still very happy with the clubs. These clubs have held up well to the rough conditions of my local course, and the steel seems tough enough to resist chips and dings from the occassional pebble in the desert sand at my home courses. The clubs hit a nice, high trajectory for me. I also like the shape and weight of the heads (I have a non-XL2000 gap wedge in my bag now, but am going to buy the XL2000 gap wedge because I like the flat bottom line of the head on these clubs). I would definitely recommend these to someone looking for a reliable, durable value-priced set of clubs. |

These clubs are not as good as other review say they are. I wanted to get new clubs because i am now on my high school golf team. I tried out a set of adams tight lies gt performance, and loved their short irons but could not hit the long irons at all. I figured i should try out a little bit cheaper clubs, so i bought these on ebay. The long irons are easy to hit(the 3 fades a bit), but i don't like the shorter irons. I hit my seven iron higher than a pw, and it only goes about 140. and with 8-pw, i hook it pretty bad. I lost about 10-15 yards on my short irons. I can't afford new clubs now, so i just have to deal with these for about 4 years. Customer Service What are we supposed to put here?
