Ping G5 Irons

Ping G5 Irons

DESCRIPTION

Designed in multiple sections for maximum performance, the radius of the lead edge helps improve ground impact for better ball impact. Enhanced perimeter weighting maked the G5 iron very forgiving. By increasing the moment of inertia, off center shots are straighter and distance loss is decreased.

Model Reviewed: Ping i5 irons with Z-Z65 shafts

Well, my Orlimar Trimetal clubs were stolen a few weeks ago, so I started testing irons to find a replacement. I always loved those irons as they were very long and they made it easy to draw the ball as much as I wanted. They were standard lie and I always had to close the club face at address to keep from hitting a high push. After going through the Ping fitting system and discovering that I need clubs with a 4 degree upright lie, I now understand why I had to close the face on the Orlimar irons. If you are looking to buy new irons the most important thing is to get fitted, as it makes a trememdous difference in being able to work the ball in both directions.

I shoot in the low 80s with mid 90 mph club head speed with my irons and I thought I wanted to move up to a forged blade, but after trying all of the top blades on the market I settled on a set of i5 irons, 3 through L wedge with Z-Z65 shafts I actually loved the G5 irons, but I could not work the ball very much unless the ball was teed up.

I have a one plane swing that I have worked very hard on over the last few years. Now that I have a great set of irons there is no doubt that my handicap is coming down probably 5 strokes over the next few months. These i5 irons are very forgiving, yet the allow you to work the ball either direction with ease. I can now simply open or close the club face a little bit while taking the same swing and I get a nice fade or draw.

If you are looking for a great set of irons that are long and very forgiving, give the i5s a try.

I would also suggest if you have any problems with your swing, it would probably be very wise to take a few lesson to get your swing sorted out before being fitted as it could effect you lie angle and shaft type.

I have heard nothing but great things.

This is the first set of clubs that I purchased that were fitted to my swing. I tried the I5 and the G5 during the fitting process. I just seemed to hit the G5 better with much less effort. I ended up with white dots, 1/2 longer, CSlite stiff with Cushion insert. I finally got them on the course and could not be happier. It was strange hitting balls and seeing them end up where I was aiming, most of the time. I did lose a shot with a three iron but the strong cross wind probably helped in that area. So far so good, and I see nothing but better shots in the future.

Customer Service

Have not had to use CS yet but don't anticipate any problems.

I can't say enough about these irons. I previously was using Ping i3+ blue dots. After getting fitted, I realized I was actually a white dot. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get fitted. After taking some practice shots with the G5's what a difference. The club is super lite with CS Light Regular shafts. Amazing feel and forgiveness. This was just from practice shots in the store. I can't wait to get these puppies out on the course. I wish I had been fitted a long time ago.

Great customer service. Knowledgeable staff. Very happy

I finally decided to spend the money and get a good and forgiving set of clubs. The Ping was the obvious choice since they have great fitting system and from my previous experience with fitted clubs (Wilson fat shafts)it was a must for me (6'-4" tall). I was suprized with how much more than just static fitting (available on Ping web site) there was in the fitting procedure to get the clubs just perfect for your size and swing. Thank god I did not just buy them on Ebay. Not to mention the professionalizm and treatment you receive. I spend 2 hours with extremely patient, knowlegable and honest guy and ended up with great set of G5s and free lesoon. If you live in Southern Tier, NY, go to Greater Golf Training Center and treat yourself with great set of clubs fitted just right for you. G5s are amazing. What a diference. Very forgiving with great feedback. I don't work the ball, so I can't comment on that.

Customer Service

I've heard great stories about Ping service and judging by my experience with the fitter, they must be true.

I was in the market for a new set of irons. I'm a golf junkie and look at and try just about everything. I consistently play low-mid 80's and have hit in the 70's - but not as often as I would like. I had made up my mind to go Ping - had been to several different demo days and liked the custom fitting (I'm 6'4"). I was originally looking at S59's - great club but you do need a very consistent swing to really make them work. I didn't like the I5 - they seemed too much of a compromise between blades and offset clubs. I had no intention to go G5, but tried them just to see. WOW! So easy to hit. I could hit the ball high, low, fade and draw. Playablitiy and forgiveness. The offset isn't as noticeable as I thought it would be. I ordered 4-PW, and black tour wedges (very nice) with DGS300 lites. Shafts were worth the extra money. I hit a 2 over par 74 in my second round with them! I've come to realise that if you can't practise for hours every day then you need all the help you can get to score low. Leave the blades on the showroom shelf (let go of that ego!) and go for quality clubs that will help you score. Sure the blades look great but behind a ball they just don't inspire the confidence to get the ball to fly where you want (unless you are a scratch golfer who plays and practises a lot).
Thanks Ping! Thoroughly recommended.

Customer Service

I can't speak highly enough of the people at Ping in Sydney who looked after me. From the demo at the driving range, to the custom fitting at the indoor facility, the pro took his time with me and was extremely helpful. He'd basically worked out my fitting from the driving range (if the pro can see your actual ball flight, it really does help rather than just hitting into a net). The indoor facility helped to confirm lie angles.

I got fit for these at a local golf course and let me tell you...These irons are unbeleiveable! Ive been playing for about 6 months and shooting consistently above 100 with Callaway X16 Pro series, which are extremely unforgiving and not for beginners. I ordered the G5's, 5 thru SW with a 50* U wedge, CS lite reg. flex. The first time I used them I shot 15 strokes better than my previous rounds...Even when I mis-hit the ball it still goes pretty straight and FAR...And for that reason I wouldnt recommend them to advanced players who want to work the ball more. I paid $699 for them and theyre worth every penny. The only other club I considered were the first generation Nike Slingshots, mainly for the forgiveness factor. But to anyone looking at buying a set of game improvement irons, go try the G5's out, you will not be disappointed! Now, if I could only putt...

Havent used them but I hear theyre great.

I replaced 10 yr. old Tommy Armour 855's that I loved. Before searching for irons I swore I would never play Ping clubs (too offset, looked strange). These clubs are fantastic. Though the I5's are touted as much more workable, the G5's have tremendous shot shaping ability. Shots feel rich, and fly toward target with remarkable reliability.

Customer Service

Clubs arrived much sooner than expected.

I bought the G5 irons two weeks ago. These clubs are the easiest irons to aim and hit that I have owned. The irons have a high trajectory but distance is not sacrificed. The steel shafts fit my swing perfectly and I have not experienced any vibration problems. I would strongly recommend these irons. They are a little pricey but will hold their value for a long time.

The G5's are the bomb. I have mine shafted with Dynamic Gold S300's and they are the best iron I have played in the last few years. Much softer feeling than the G2's, they also have less bounce which I have found very helpful. They will be in the bag a long time.

I like to try out new clubs so I have played with the Eye 2, I3, G2, and G5. I have been using the G5 irons and while I agree with all of the comments on this board, these are great irons, I would save myself some money and get some used Eye 2s of ebay. The G5 has a much better feel than the G2...it doesn't feel as harsh. Compared to my Eye 2s, it really doesn't perform much better. It looks really nice and is sure to impress your buddies...but it just isn't that much better than the G2 or Eye 2 for that matter.

Customer Service

Ping has always been great when I call with questions.
