Model Reviewed: Nike Forged Blade

I started playing golf since 2002/Apr and Nike Blade helped me broke 100 in 12 months. I am shooting at 90s. I surveyed many iron sets to replace my first full set, which was a mistake because I don't need the driver and the whip-like woods are softer than cheese cake but have their own strong idea about where the ball should go. I looked at X-14, Hawkeye, Taylormade 320, Ping i3, MX-20, MP-33, Apex, Apex Pro, 690MB, 690CB.... I didn't have the chance to try Nike Blade because it was so new that no one offers a demo to me. Eventually I hit into a demo day and tried Nike Blade. I was very impressed by its forgivness and soft feeling. I decided to buy it right away. All other golfer laughed when they seen me, as an 100+ shooter, buy Tiger Wood's club. But I have my reasons: 1. Nike Blade is shorter than other blades, therefore, it is more forgiving. It certainly isn't in the most forgiving iron league, but it is as forgiving as some cavity back irons. I also own an MX-20 set, which is only slightly more forgiving. 2. It has better feedback that helped me improved my shot. Off center shot is forgived but easily feeled. So I got the blade feeling and reasonable forgivness out of this club. Ball flight is consistant and accurate, for a beginner like me. The only thing I lost is distance, initially I feel shame when I pull 4-iron out from my bag while all other golfers are holding their 6-iron. Later I realized that it really doesn't matter. I particular like Nike's grip. I think it is one of the best grip available. I also like the spin this club generates. When I hit it I can feel the groove cut in the ball (maybe due to higher loft?). The craftmanship is at the highest level of the industry - very good quality.

Model Reviewed: Nike Blades

What did golfers play with before oversized irons came along? They played blades, whether they were 10 years old, or 80 years old. To name a few of the best ball strikers of all time...Hogan, Nicklaus, Watson, Nelson. They used blades. Now, name 4 players currently on tour who hit the ball as purely as those 4. Good luck. Bottom line is, blades force you to swing on plane, and don't allow you to swing the club improperly and still hit a decent shot, as "forgiving" irons do. What happens when you hit iron after iron shot, grooving your swing improperly, then you hit a driver? "So that's why I hit my driver 50 yds off line half the time." Listen, my kids hit blades from the time they started playing, and all 3 strike the ball very well. Obviously, when they were very small, they played junior clubs because of the lightweight characteristics, and swithched to blades as soon as they were strong enough to properly swing full sized clubs. As far as the Nike Blades are concerned, truly excellent irons. They are so pure, and if you hit your 8 iron 152 this time, you will hit it around 152 the next. I have played Titleist 690s, and Mizuno MP 33s, and they were not nearly as consistent in ball flight, trajectory, or distance. As far as the distance loss with the Nike Blades, it's true. But, it's true for a simple reason. Nike built an iron that has traditional lofts and lengths, offering more control, but about a club less on distance. But who cares? The last I heard, irons are supposed to hit your target, whether it's the flag, or the center of the green, not to afford you bragging rights about how far you hit your 6 iron. An example of the control I have with these irons: I'm 6'3", 210 pounds, and carry my driver around 290 yds.(and I don't use the should-be illegal Pro V1X either!)I was playing this past weekend, and was faced with a difficult shot to a tough pin location. I usually hit my 8 iron 150-155 yds. The distance to the hole was 137 yds., usually a 9 iron for me. There was a slight breeze in my face, so I choked down on the 8 and hit it smooth. The ball stopped 20 inches from the hole. I can back off a pitching wedge from 127 down to 105. Total control! To sum up my feelings on these irons, pick up some Nike Blades for your next set. They are truly the best blades on the market. Ask Tiger (8 for 27 in majors) and ignore Mickelson's bogus comments (0 for 45 in majors).

Just read through all the reviews and would like to make the following comments. I agree blades are no harder to hit than cavity backs. Just goes to show what makers will do to increase profit using clever marketing & cheaper manufacturing costs. Note that by putting weight in the bottom of the club, and putting longer shafts in will give you 'more distance', but if you can't feel what's going on - what's the point !! Second, just had these clubs loft & lie checked & found them to be 3 degrees over std loft ! - no wonder some of you have lost 1.5 clubs in distance - get 'em checked out. Third, Tried loads of different blades before buying these and agree with the chap who had the old Wilsons. Nothing has come close to the FG-19 in terms of feel and playability. Come on Wilson, re-release them. Overall nice club, classic look, good feel & really easy to hit throughout the bag. Not happy about lofts from the factory & four grips weren't aligned square to the clubface. Also, forged clubs are just TOO expensive.

I've now played 40+ rounds with the Nikes and they have far exceeded my expectations. Fantastic clubs all-around. Only Mizunos rival these guys with respect to feel, but I like the Nikes for better balance, consistency and ball flight throughout the set. This is only the second set of irons I have used on a regular basis in the past ten years and although the lofts are on par with my old Eye2s, I still lose almost one club of distance vs. my old set. I would expect most players to lose at least 1 1/2 clubs due to the 1/2" shorter shafts and much weaker lofts vs. modern day specs. Everything else about these clubs borders on perfect. They are the most beautiful clubs on the market today and I find forgiveness on misses to be very much in line with smaller cavity backs from Titleist and Ping. Ball flight and trajectory is the single area where I feel I have benefitted the most from the Nikes. The feedback from the blades is fantastic and should make you a better player. My handicap index was very static around 5 for the past couple years but has dropped to a 3 since putting the Nikes in the bag fulltime. Definitely worth the extra investment in my opinion.

The fact that I am hitting with a blade scared me at first. True enough, my first round with these clubs was a disaster. But I think, the best part of having blades is that I wanted to improve my swing. Looking at these nice clubs gave me a renewed passion for the game. Since then, I took golf lessons and have improved my swing and started enjoying the game more than ever. It doesnt matter whether you are hitting with blades or cavity backs, as long as you are enjoying the game, you'll keep improving... if you are a weekend warrior just like me, then enjoying is what it is all about. Would i trade these clubs for any other clubs? ... I dont think so (at least, not within the next 2 years). Happy golfing!

If you can hit the ball around center, and you prefer accuracy rather than distance then this club might suit you. This club is very forgiving, solid at impact (different than tin can). Yes, I get less distance, this thing have +2* loaf (more open), about 25gr heavier than my previous club set. Although it has Stiff shaft, it is SR. It has nice grip too. Looks like Nike want to impress golfer at first product release, well they got me. Many reviewer don't include their body stats so: I am 5ft5' 60kg, hit 145yard with 5i, swing speed: 80.

I was curious to see if the Nike blades were as good as I've heard, and well... they are. The word "blade" shouldn't scare you; these irons are very forgiving, even on miss-hits. When you hold them at address you feel confident that a good shot is comming. The price for these irons is well worth it.

I have a 130 mph swing speed, and I've won 8 majors. People recognize me the world over and I get paid a lot of money to endorse golf clubs and cars. Phil Mickelson knocks these clubs, but he's just being Phil. I love 'em. Whether it's a 2-iron stinger or a 9-iron from 160 yards, I always have confidence that my Nike blades will help me perform at my best. Haven't won a major lately, but it doesn't really matter because my Swedish girlfriend is hot!
