Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Ben Hogan Golf: "When Ben Hogan introduced the first forged, perimeter-weighted irons in 1989, he built the club some said, "couldn't be made." The "impossible" combination of perimeter-weighted forgiveness and forged feel. This experience, technology and innovation shapes the Ben Hogan Apex Plus. Many golfers have aspired to play a Ben Hogan Apex. Now, the perimeter-weighted Apex Plus provides an appreciably larger sweet spot across the face of the club, from heel to toe. Off-center hits will go longer, be more accurate and just happen to "feel" a lot better, too."

Without a doubt some of the best irons I have ever played with. At first look I didnt think i would like them but I wont ever look at another set(and I am a serious club-ho). The short irons are very accurate while the long irons give you the necc. forgiveness. They look beautiful in the bag and you certainly will recieve complements from all your playing partners. I have played many sets of irons but these are the real deal! And now you can get them for a very reasonable price on ebay.

UNBELIEVABLE FEEL AND ACCURACY. I’M HITTING TWICE AS MANY GREENS IN REGULATION WITH THE HOGANS. THE FEEDBACK IS TERRIFIC, WHEN YOU HIT A BAD SHOT YOU KNOW WHY. I ONLY WISH I HAD BOUGHT THESE TWO YEARS AGO; MY HANDICAP WOULD BE 3 OR 4 STROKES BETTER TODAY.

These clubs came to me very nearly mint condition, and look the absolute business in the bag. Shiny in all the right places! I purchased them after reading the reviews here, and have to agree with what the other guys have said. Quality made clubs giving a solid feel on off centre hits and a beautiful feeling when you catch it on the button. This also results in a pleasantly straight penetrating ball flight. Fairly easy to hit draws, fades, and especially good for knock downs - (good if you live in the windy and wet UK!). Would recommend these clubs to anyone. Only gripe; the paint has started to come off the numbers on the bottom of the club. As other reviewers mentioned, this is slightly annoying but if this is the worst thing you can say about a set of sticks then you've probably bought the right clubs for you!

I am turning the corner on one full year with these clubs, and my game has changed substantially because of them. You have never felt a "pure" golf shot until you hit the sweet spot on one of these clubs. As far as I am concerned, they have one distinct flaw, which is that the longer irons have too much offset (for my taste), which can result in a very strong draw off of the tee. However, the strong lofts, piercing trajectories, excellent weight, balance, accuracy, and feel of these clubs is unmatched in my experience. They are much more forgiving than a blade, but provide a similar look and feel. What I like most about them is that they demand YOUR performance. You are awarded generously for a good swing and you learn something from every poor swing.

Outstanding clubs. Played them for 1 1/2 years sofar. Still love them. Can't imagine playing with another set. Some of the longest clubs I have played. As important, they are beautiful. (Wife wonders at the time I put in cleaning them. Still some of the best looking clubs on the market.) Clubs communicate solid hits with the soft feel of a forging. Off-center hits are distinctly felt and suffer sligtly in terms of distance (unless contact is marginal); but ball will generally stay on-line. Only downsides: paint wears quickly (Hogan gave me an address where I can send them to be touched-up); PW (E) is real strong (gap wedge is a must). With discounts I have seen on these clubs recently, they are a steal. I highly recommend these clubs to the mid to low handicapper; high handicaps should consider the Edge or other cavity back. (If you buy a set, keep the receipt; you'll probably need it within the two year warranty period for new paint.)

I had a set of Ping I3's and thought they were wonderful. The pings had a stiff shaft when I tried the Hogans I tried the regular shaft. Maybe the shaft was a difference but my swing speed is above 90. The Hogans were 10-15 yrds longer than the Pings. They feel wonderful when you strike the ball and it's a great looking club when you address the ball. I am a Hogan fan.

Customer Service

No real complaints. I do wish they used better paint on the club numbering. They tend to come off easy.

These irons are amazing! My father has a set too, and told me these are a must get. To start out, these irons look great. Not only do they look great but the preform. High fade, knock down shots, slight draw, whatever you want to hit. I read several reviews about these irons on this website, and people were complaining about the distance. Their callaway x-12 or x-14 hit it further. What callaway doesn't tell you is that their clubs are delofted. Their pitching wedge is a 46* not the standard true loft 48* like the Hogans. Karston Solheim, the founder of Ping had a revolutionary idea in the early 90s. Take a 5 iron shaft length and loft and put a "6" on it. Then advertise it saying you can hit our clubs further. This is what many companies are using today; not the hogan apex. I recommend these irons to a golfer shooting in the 70s to 80s. They are forged with a slight cavity back and slight offset so they are a little more forgiving then muscle backs.

Bought them (steel shaft) because I've heard good reviews (and because they where good looking...). But the truth is that I play between 90 and 95, so I should have never bought these forged irons. I need irons that will be forgiving and that will help my game (not work against me). If you have a 0 to 10 handicap, maybe these irons will be perfect for you, but not for me. I hope I didn`t offend some of you but before I have bought them I read all of your good reviews and it could have been good for me to have read a different opinion. I will probably trade them for a set of TM 200 or the new Cobra SS oversize (wich are more forgiving).

Hard to believe Hogan discontinued these clubs. Truly a beautiful iron. You almost don't want to get them dirty. They also look great when you're standing over the ball. They look and feel like a good iron should. They are not that hard to hit if you have a decent swing, yet they let you know if you have not made a good swing, which is important. A well struck shot does indeed feel like butter. The best set of irons I've ever played with. Did I say it's a shame they've been discontinued?
