Ben Hogan Apex Plus #3 shaft
Great club! I bought this club because I was looking for a set that is similar to a blade iron, but is a little more forgiving than a pure blade! This club has a compacted sweet spot which means more distance and I can shape my shots so well with these irons! I bought these irons with a #3 steel shaft because my previous irons were too light and I have come to the conclusion that these irons aren't backbreaking heavy or feather light...they are right in the middle. I would recommend these irons to anyone that shoots from 90 on down. I have decreased my score from an 82 average to a 77 average so they are perfect for most intermediate to scratch golfers! Customer Service The red paint or sticker on my 6 iron fell off and they told me to paint it back on. But that doesn't take away from the value of it!! Similar Products Used: Yonex, Callaway blades |

When I purchased these clubs I had been playing some 1960's forged MacGregor blades and was concentrating on finding the sweet spot everytime I swung. I then purchased these Hogans after hitting the MacGregor VIP Tourney Blades, Tourney Cavity Backs, Mizuno MP-30 and Cleveland TA-3. All of which felt great, but the best feel was in the Hogans. The size of the sweet spot on my MacG's is about the size of a dime (no exaggeration) so I hit a great shot about once in every 3 swings, but when I hit it it's like something from The Golf Channel's old school Master's highlight tapes! The flight is pure and it cuts through the wind. These Hogans allow me to hit the shots I want EVERY SWING!!! It is incredible. Who cares if the red paint chips out of the number on the sole of the club- maybe that is why they are just about the only club manufacturer out there that puts color on the sole of the club! It doesn't affect my feeling towards the shots I hit!! These clubs matched with the Hogan Apex Tour ball give me laser-like accuracy and I can rest assured that on EVERY green I hit the ball will be NO MORE than 2 yds from my ball mark!!!!!! I have Rifle 6.0 shafts and I like them. The Apex shafts that come stock in these clubs are nice, but I get a little higher trajectory with the Rifles and that may have some bearing on the way the ball sticks on the green (but even a 3 iron from 225 yds just seems to STICK!!!). There is no doubt that these clubs are beautiful and they look great sitting in my bag, but they look even better after I've hit a green from 200 out and I'm putting for birdie (or eagle!). The sweet spot isn't huge like some oversize tennis raquets they sell in pro shops now (Cobras come to mind), but these clubs aren't for the golfer who doesn't putt or chip for birdie or better on every hole. What I mean is if you have a bad swing there isn't a club or club/ball combination in the world that will help you hit more greens. If you have a good move and you are consistently on the green or just off and chipping or putting for a birdie or better on every hole then these clubs might be just the thing you need to drop your handicap 5 strokes! Having used a relatively medium spec set for a couple of years (RAM FX) wanted to make sure I got the ones I wanted this time. Had my eye on the Taylor Made 300's (borrowed from TM addict) and liked the feel when took them out for a couple of rounds. Looked at the Hogan Apex Plus - got hold of a sample club and really liked feel, balance and like most people, looks when over the ball. Tried a sample set at local driving range and fell for them. Currently, I've lost between half and 1 club distance per iron but the consistency and ball flight is hugely better. Early days but my game feels better, my swing is better, more greens mean more opportunities for birdies and I'm averaging 3 to 4 shots a round below last year. Only down side, my set seems to have suffered from the red paint falling off that I've seen in other reviews though! Having said that these clubs simply inspire!!! Can't wait till the summer and the better conditions!! Customer Service No need yet. Similar Products Used: TM 300, TM 320, TM Burners, Titleist, Dunlop Maxfli |

Yes they are beautiful and classy, but they weren't for me. Rarely did I feel like I made a pure hit, and I lost a lot of distance. Maybe the stiff shafts were at fault, or maybe these are truly made for better ball-strikers. On thing: I loved the 7 iron for bump & run shots. Otherwise, let someone else play them and rave in exaggeration about them...I've gone back to my Cobra irons. Customer Service hey, Hogan is owned by SPALDING, folks. Don't expect too much. Ben Hogan Apex Plus with #3 steel shaft
With a swing speed of approx. 70 - 75 mph with I 7 I fould it hard to control my previous irons (Mizuno T-3 Ti-insert with Accel-Arc reg-flex shafts) and my pro told me to go for steel. I tested a lot of clubs over some months and the bottom line was that first of all I wanted a solid head and not a channeled construction like the Mizuno MX-20 or the Hogan Apex Edge). Ball flight should be medium high. I had narrowed it down to Mizuno MP-30, the Cleveland TA-3 and the Apex Edge Pro. All of them great clubs, but quite expensive over here (All you American golfers should be aware that you're quite lucky, for the prices for clubs in the US are about 30 - 50 % lower than here in Central Europe!). Due to lucky circumstances I learned that a a local pro shop they had a last set of Apex Plus at a discount price for Euro 500, for they had been played on the range once (approx. 20 balls per club). I took a seperate iron 5 for testing on the range, hit about three dozen balls and I was sold. I talked the shop manager down to Euro 400 - approx 380 US-Dollars - and took the set home. Now owning it for about a month and having having played it for a couple of times I can say following about this set: The v-shaped shaft/grip is great for setting the hands. You take the club and it just "fits" in your hands. They feel very balance, even the iron 3 seems "playable" to me. The feel is great - you quickly learn where you've hit the ball just by the feel of the impact. Mis-hits will result in a minor or major loss of distance, and they are definitely not classic "game improvement" irons. But they are "player improvement" irons - i.e. learn to swing correctly or forget it: Mis-hits (e.g. cutting the ball with the lower edge) can causes real pain in your hands/wrist/arm. I recommend you stay away from these driving range boxes with these green, grasslike floor (sorry, don't know the correct English expression for it), especially if you tend to hit the ball fat - touching the ground behind the ball. The steel shafts don't dampen a lof of vibration so these hits go straight into the arm. My left arm didn't like that at all. On the other hand you get an unbelievable feel when you hit the ball correctly. Even with my quite slow swing speed I get approx. 160 meters (175 yards) with an iron 5. The short irons fly high and really bite into the greens, in fact it what the first time that I saw one of my balls rolling backwards on the green. Tres cool. One thing I don't like about these irons is just cosmetically: The red paint of the clubs number crakcs quite quick and falls of. These irons are not for the once-or-twice-per-month-golfer who doesn't like to practice. For the next few months the driving range will be my best friend, but these clubs are very promising... O.k., back to player improvement now... Customer Service Not really needed yet. Emailed via contact adress on BenHogan.com once, didn't get a reply. |

Ben Hogan Apex Edge CFT irons
Purchased Apex Edge CFT's, 3-E set on 1/4/03. Tried them out same day and found that the #3 reg. steel shaft was not stiff enough for me.This is manly due to my higher swing speed, and I feel the reg.flex shaft may not be stiff enough to handle the heavy club head.I exchanged these the next day for a stiff #4 shaft and hit them that same day.WONDERFUL- Like a knife through butter when hit in sweet spot. The more easy and smooth you swing the further they go.I was able to get 155yrds from the #8 iron on the range. You will LOVE these irons. They look great and are strong. This is how a club should feel.I highly recommend these irons.I look foward to improving even more with these irons.Found them to be much better then the Titlest DCI 822OS. Customer Service The people at Edwin Watts in Orlando, Fl. were great as alwayes. Similar Products Used: Titlest 822OS |

These clubs are great, the first set of forged clubs I have owned. I demoed all the brands and nothing could touch these clubs, The feel is unreal. I was shooting in the low to mid 90's with my old irons (taylor's), and now I am shooting in the mid to high 80's and improving, The only problem with these clubs is they look so sweet you don't want to hit them. These are the first set of forged clubs I've ever owned and I can't say enough about them. These clubs give instant feed back and make you groove your swing! I've played titleist 981's for a couple of seasons and liked them but I'm still partial to the Hogan's. |
