Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Ben Hogan Golf: "When Ben Hogan introduced the first forged, perimeter-weighted irons in 1989, he built the club some said, "couldn't be made." The "impossible" combination of perimeter-weighted forgiveness and forged feel. This experience, technology and innovation shapes the Ben Hogan Apex Plus. Many golfers have aspired to play a Ben Hogan Apex. Now, the perimeter-weighted Apex Plus provides an appreciably larger sweet spot across the face of the club, from heel to toe. Off-center hits will go longer, be more accurate and just happen to "feel" a lot better, too."

I tried many irons of different brands, before I got my apex plus. The hogans feel solid and confident. Miss-hits don't sting like real hard forged blades that I tried before and toe-shots still fly a descent distance. I liked the feel of callaways also, but I didn't like the look of big heads. Ping i3 felt stiff and light for me. The new Taylormade irons(300, 320) didn't just feel right. Evo 31 is a good cast iron. I liked the feel of it also. But.... Try the apex plus, you will love the solid foundation!

Played these irons for the second round Saturday, and all i can say is WOW! I think anyone with a decent, agressive swing can play forged irons. Have played the eye2's for the past 5 years, and they dont even compare to the Hogan's. I have noticed that the length is longer when you connect properly. People told me that i should stay away from forged irons. All i can say is if you think u want to play a forged iron, play them. These are the sweetest irons around.

This is a very very solid Iron. I wouldn't recommend them if you shoot over mid 80's. Go with Callaways. However, If you're low 80's and below, these are I think the best out there. Also, if you tend to like a "heavy head" feel, these are your irons. In a few reviews I read about some guys who talked about shanking - THE dreaded word. I think shanking is caused by the golfer, not the club, however I will say that I think it's easier to shank a heavier club then a lighter one. (That's why alot of people who shank sometimes tend to shank wedges - wedges are heaviest of the irons). So a higher handi-capper not used to controlling a heavier feel could have some trouble w/these irons, I guess. Lower handicappers will not find a better feeling, better performing set of irons, then these Hogans. One critique, I wish you could custom order the offset, to get no offset if you want it, (like Tommy Armour let's you). Overall, If they're right for you, get 'em - This is a classic club with great feel!!!!

These are definitely the most beautiful clubs on the market, although since they're forged, they ding easily inside stand bag. But that's only the beginning. If the ball is well-struck, it's smooth like butter. Can work the ball both way with ease. Beware: if your ball flight is low to begin with, it will be lower with these clubs since they're less lofted than other comparable models. The tradeback is longer carry. I would also recommend Rifle Shaft to anyone. 5.5 is perfect if your driver swing speed is a around hi 90s.

Model Reviewed: APEX PLUS (GRAPHITE)

ORDERED GRAPHITE(THOUGHT LIGHTER CLUBS WOULD HELP WITH BACK ISSUES). LONG IRONS IN GRAPHITE ARE OUTSTANDING. EASY TO HIT, SMOOTH, AND GO STRAIGHT. HAVE SINCE SENT SHORT IRONS BACK TO BE RESHAFTED WITH STEEL. ALTHOUGH I LOVED THE LOOK, BALL FLIGHT, AND QUALITY OF THESE CLUBS, I COULD NOT GET ANY DISTANCE CONTROL OR FEELING OUT OF THE GRAPHITE SHORT IRONS. MY GUESS IS THAT WHEN I GET THEM BACK, THE MIXED SHAFT SET WILL BE PERFECT FOR ME. IF YOU CAN'T DECIDE TO GET GRAPHITE OR STEEL, I RECCOMEND THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. SURE THE SWING WEIGHT DIFFERENCE IS THE ONLY HURDLE, BUT I LOOK AT IT AS IF IT WOULDN'T HURT TO SLOW DOWN THE SWING ON MY LONG IRONS ANYWAY. GET MEASURED UP, SWING AWAY, AND WATCH THESE CLUBS WORK.

WOW WOW WOW!!! Incredible club. Thoughfull design that gives you the detailed feedback of a blade and the forgivness of a cavity-back and what better to top it off than the best forged steel (1030 carbon). Another great fact is that players like Mike Weir and Jim Furyk (who are great ball strikers) use this club and do not loose anything because of the cavity back and players tat shoot in the 80s can use this club because it has the forgivness when they need it and has the great buttery soft hits when the strike it flush>!! i would say right now this is the best club in golf (aside from the price) but if you are serious about golf, this will be a great investment.

Purchased Apex Plus irons about three weeks ago after much research and more demos then I care to admit. To be quite honest I had some concerns after reading some of the reviews from a few of the people. But, I kept coming back to the Apex Plus. Once you take these clubs out on the driving range and then to the course all second thoughts just disappear. They are great set of irons. I find that they are about one-half club longer than my old irons and I am really impressed on how well they hold the line even on off center hits. They also look great in my bag. The other comments like "buttery soft feel" when they are struck well is true. Now I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but, I must admit that my three rounds since purchasing these clubs yielded two rounds in the low 80's and breaking 80 for the first time in five years of golfing. Could it be the clubs??? You just need to purchase a set and find out for yourself. They come "highly recommended."

These are the finest irons I have ever hit. They look so good at address and are so easy to hit. Offcenter shots go just as far and straight. I would recommend these for high handicappers just as much as I would for lows. I got a great deal on them from IWantGolf.com----$650. I am a little skeptical though on how robust they will be.

Model Reviewed: Apex Plus, Flighted Rifle 6.0 Shafts

Having switched from my old Hogan blades to cavity backs about five years ago, I felt it was time to go back to a forged club. Having tried Mizuno Comp EZ's, and finding them too similar to my old XV's - namely nice, forgiving, and long, but with little or no workability - I opted for a set of Apex Plus's. Chose Rifle shafts as the Apex #4 stock shafts seemed a little whippy and I have been looking for more control.

The clubs are quite pricey, but with custom shafts and a two iron included, not prohibitively expensive.

The Hogans are beautiful to look at, and have clearly been very well crafted. They set up well and inspire confidence at address. The clubs are heavier to swing then my Mizuno's, which helps me to keep a more regular swing plane. At impact, the contact is crisp, and just 'feels' right. I have, however, lost about 10 yards with these clubs, mostly due to going from Dynamic Gold R-400 shafts to flighted Rifle 6.0 - the sacrifice in distance is made up by greater accuracy and more confidence standing over the ball (I have a good idea where it will go!).

I have only played one round with the clubs, albeit hit them many times on the range, so the jury is still making its final decision. At this stage, I have not hit a single shot that did not feel anything other than wonderful coming off the club face, and would say that these irons are a great testament to Hogan (and Spalding).

Highly recommended at this stage - I'll post another review after my week's vacation in Myrtle Beach in April.

Don't know what happened to the posting of my previous review complaining about shanks (with very low ratings); it disappeared. Thank you Mike, from Athens GA. I followed your experience with the Hogans and cured the shanks. Now I have graduated to playing different shape shots with expected results. I recommend that other golfers seeking 'immediate gratification' work with this club before giving up. The work is well worth the results.
