Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Ben Hogan Golf: "When Ben Hogan introduced the first forged, perimeter-weighted irons in 1989, he built the club some said, "couldn't be made." The "impossible" combination of perimeter-weighted forgiveness and forged feel. This experience, technology and innovation shapes the Ben Hogan Apex Plus. Many golfers have aspired to play a Ben Hogan Apex. Now, the perimeter-weighted Apex Plus provides an appreciably larger sweet spot across the face of the club, from heel to toe. Off-center hits will go longer, be more accurate and just happen to "feel" a lot better, too."

I'm just a beginner and searching for my first set of irons. This club is absolutely stunningly good-looking--gives me a thrill just picking it up. My pro shop had only one demo in LH, a 5-iron, so I hit two buckets of balls with it. I'll give it 5 stars so as not to ruin the present average, but, for a second-summer beginner it's not really the ticket. It does provide a lot of feedback as to where I was meeting the ball with the clubhead--which might help me get better at ball striking (?)--but I found that mythical blade-like sweet-spot only a handful of times. I guess a guy like me needs more of a shovel, at least for now. Thirtysomethings (handicap, I mean) should probably look at these...I mean "look at" as in admire--but then go play with something else. Too bad, because if there's a better-looking golf club on the planet I have yet to see it.

The Apex Plus is a forged cavity back. They feel as good as forged blades w/ additional forgiveness of a cavity back. They also look great. They are more forgiving than they look and they are very accurate. I think my search is over for perfect irons (for me). A little bit pricy but they are worth every penny.

These irons have a uniquely attractive appearance- many comment on this. Extremely solid feel when struck near the sweet spot- quite forgiving actually. I hit the same yardage as other clubs but the look and feel was better than other clubs tried.

The Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons offer a forged cavity-backs with progressive face thickness to move the center of gravity where it's needed-low in the long irons, higher in the short irons- for playability. It's one of the most beautiful clubs on the market. These clubs are slightly longer than my previous clubs. The second best feature, next to its looks, is it's accuracy and forgiveness. They are awesome at limiting sidespin on mis-hits.

I manage a golf shop and have the opportunity to try a lot of clubs. Until recently, I have been playing Cleveland TA-3's with sensicore shafts, but have missed the pure feeling of a forged club for sometime. The Apex Plus irons with 6.0 Tour-flighted Rifle shafts allow me to hit the ball a little higher with my long irons and give me great ability to shape my shots on the course. I've had lots of customers offer to buy them but I wouldn't sell them for the world. Great work Ben Hogan!

I played with the 845 Silver Scotts for 10 years w/ a stiff shaft, when I decided to upgrade. The golf shop, Golf Augusta, Cherry Hill, NJ, let me leave a credit card # with them and take 5 different irons out to the range to hit them. The 5 irons I took were the Hogan Apex Plus, the Ping Blade, the Mizuno Comp 2, the Wilson Fat Shaft and, of course my 5 iron from the Silver Scotts. At first, hitting the rock hard balls off of a wet mat, I did not notice much of a difference. Once I warmed up and started swinging slower and smoother I noticed a big difference in the feel of the Hogans vs all of the others. I always hit the 845's straight, which I was doing, but the feel of the Hogans so pleasing upon impact - there really was no comparison. The other clubs felt nice as well. However, I am a traditionalist and love the look of the Hogans and think that I will never have to buy another set of irons. In addition, Golf Augusta fit me into a regular flex shaft which is closer to my swing speed with an iron (around 77mph). When I took them to the course I was not expecting any dramatic improvement due to the "getting to know period." My first two rounds were 78 with them and I hit alot more greens in regulation with them than ever before. These two rounds were 5 shots below where I was averaging and could have been alot better if I had been putting well that day. I attribute alot of the improvement to playing the correct shaft for my speed but the feeling of the clubs is so soft that I think it made me concentrate even harder because I wanted that sweet forged club feel again and again. Definitely worth the extra money when your major hobby is golf.

Like all the other reviewers I can only report total satisfaction. My Hogans are shafted with Rifle shafts and these suit me perfectly. The feel when you hit it anywhere near the sweetspot is pure magic. I am the kind of golfer that continually changes clubs searching for that magic cure but I don't think I'll be changing my Hogans any time soon.

I have played a set of mizuno pros for about six years. I do not like to switch clubs very often. I was not planning on switching until I hit these new Hogan. I feel like they are more forgiving than my mizuno and they really feel soft. The clubs are so pretty that I did not want to hit them when I first got them. I think that Mr. Hogan would have been very pleased.

Much more forgiving than I expected, I have steel shafts and they are a club shorter than my prior graphite but the accuracy more than makes up for it. The feel is truly remarkable. I recommend them highly.

Customer Service

very good and helpful.
