Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Ben Hogan Golf: "When Ben Hogan introduced the first forged, perimeter-weighted irons in 1989, he built the club some said, "couldn't be made." The "impossible" combination of perimeter-weighted forgiveness and forged feel. This experience, technology and innovation shapes the Ben Hogan Apex Plus. Many golfers have aspired to play a Ben Hogan Apex. Now, the perimeter-weighted Apex Plus provides an appreciably larger sweet spot across the face of the club, from heel to toe. Off-center hits will go longer, be more accurate and just happen to "feel" a lot better, too."

AWESOME!! I learned on a set of 845's and my pro moved me to these clubs with APEX 4 shafts. Truly incredible how much better I control these irons. Distance is much more constant from club to club and shot to shot! I'll never go back to cast/cavity backs again. If I decide to pass these to my son some day, i would go to the Hogan musclebacks. You should get custom fitted for shaft, loft and lie - once you have these numbers you can shop the online retailers for the best price. Liquid golf had them drop shipped to me and I had them within one four days! Hogan even called to make sure I was happy with workmanship...!

Customer Service

As I mentioned- The customer service was incredible! They called to make sure I got them OK and that I was satisified with the workmanship! I know they are less than friendly to those who buy used clubs and want to transfer warranties - They are all about custom fit clubs for one owner. Once they are sold and used by more than one person, it is hard to offer the support they want to. They are not cheap and they want to take care of those who buy a custom fit club - If you buy it on eBay, you get what you pay for... Perhaps a stolen or abused item...

I demo'ed the DCI's, EVO's, Steelhead's and Taylor Made - Nothing elst compared. I recently hit some Ping 3's (blade) and I have to admit they are a close second, although not as beautiful!

I bought these clubs on ebay, barely used, from someone who couldn't hit them. They are sweet hitting clubs! I had Yamaha Graphite Secret clubs before (12 years) and these are far superior. I was able to slow my swing down and retain equal distance. I can push them a bit for an extra 10 yards. There is fantastic consistency from club to club which allows me to stick the pin. I'm dissappointed if I don't make at least 2 birdies per side, now, and at least that many birdie putts inside 6 feet. After owning graphite for a number of years, I was also determined to go back to steel shafts to reduce handling hassles, but think I've traded for the clubhead hassle of keeping them covered / protected. Don't make the mistake of getting stiff shafts if you don't swing like a gorilla. The Apex-3 shafts are plenty accurate!

I demo'd the Wilson Fat Shaft as well, but didn't like them as much. The feel was non-existent. The consistency wasn't there on the approach shots. And I couldn't see replacing one of those fancy shafts if I snapped one, 5-6 years in the future.

Customer Service

Crap. They wouldn't let me register the clubs as a 2nd owner. Spalding / Hogan, you could take a lesson from Seagate (Hard Disk Drives). I'm not going to buy any Spalding / Hogan merchandise for a l-o-n-g time (or at least through the 2 year warranty period!)

I have been playing golf for a little over a year with Callaway X14 irons. I found these clubs very forgving. My shots get very good distances but controls and direction are poor due to the "kicks" of grahite shaft. Then I purchased the Apex Plus with Precision Rifle Lite shafts. Although these irond are semi blade/cavity back, they are great to play with. Golf is the game of feel, control and distance. I have all three in the Apex Plus.

I really love these irons. I shoot between the low 90's and high 80's. They have added a few strokes to my game. But I feel that these are irons that I will grow into, not out of. I have played about 20 rounds with them, and countless buckets from the driving range. Everyone that hits them comments how soft they feel. I also have them shafted with tour flighted 5.0 rifles and tour velvet grips. I gave them 5 stars for value (i picked them up on ebay for less than $500 practically brand new), and four stars overall because I have lost all of the paint from the numbers on the bottom. It started coming off after 5-6 rounds. I completely agree about the esthetics of the clubs being beautiful, and I'm sure that I would rate them 5 stars if I were a better golfer.

These are some of the most beautiful clubs I've ever set my paws upon, I dream about their setup and smooth top line. The feel is elegant and the look is sooooo chic. The BIG sweet spot give me such excitement that I can only moan after I finish a full perfect swing. They make me want to dance the "Cha-Cha" when the ball backspins on the dance floor.

I chose the Hogan "4" shaft and slightly oversized grips to give me that special feeling in my left hand, oops I mean hands.

Choose the clubs that made me betray Titleist and put my 990's in the dark, dark closet.

Customer Service

After some mix ups their did provide a handsome bonus.

In light of all the glowing reviews that I've seen on the Apex Plus irons, my experience with them was comparable to hitting stones with a baseball bat. There is very little forgiveness with these clubs; mis hits are greatly exaggerated. I feel like I kept these long enough to warrant a "fair tryout" but even when I hit the ball well - it didn't feel good. I purchased these clubs with great enthusiasm - you can now find these for sale on E-Bay (Item 377383869.) I'm now the proud owner of Taylor Made LCG's Rifle shaft - about 1/2 the price too!
