Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons

DESCRIPTION

From Ben Hogan Golf: "When Ben Hogan introduced the first forged, perimeter-weighted irons in 1989, he built the club some said, "couldn't be made." The "impossible" combination of perimeter-weighted forgiveness and forged feel. This experience, technology and innovation shapes the Ben Hogan Apex Plus. Many golfers have aspired to play a Ben Hogan Apex. Now, the perimeter-weighted Apex Plus provides an appreciably larger sweet spot across the face of the club, from heel to toe. Off-center hits will go longer, be more accurate and just happen to "feel" a lot better, too."

Really do love these clubs, the feeling of catching them right in the sweet spot is amlmost orgasmic. And all golfers know what I'm talking about, otherwise we wouldn't be playing now would we? Using these clubs for over a year, I have steadily improved into an 80's golfer. However, after reading a few of the other reviews, I to must admit I had a problem with these clubs. SHANKS! What gives?? I thought it was a swing problem, but I see I'm not the only one who had this problem. Glad to see it wasn't me but maybe an ill fitted set of clubs. Will maybe go to the EDGE's when they come out in Apr or May for lefties. Shanking is something I just don't want to be doing just out of the blue.

Customer Service

Excellent Customer Service from factory, answered my question about the avaliability of EDGE irons for lefties very promptly.

Model Reviewed: Hogan Apex Plus - 3 Flex (Regular)

After playing and working on my game, I decided to upgrade from my TopFlite Tour Oversize clubs. Obviously, as I only started last summer, I didn't want to purchase clubs "out of my league" but I definitely wanted clubs that would give me feedback and push me to improve my swing. After "auditioning" several clubs of this ilk at a local Las Vegas Golf and Tennis store, I was recommended that I look at the Hogan Apex Plus. When I hit this club sweet it was amazing - like a hot knife through butter; I could barely feel the hit. I bought a set but with the Apex 4 shafts. That was a mistake because my ego made me think I had a stiff rating on my iron shafts. (I had been swinging a stiff on my Tour Oversize fine) Swinging an Apex 4 made the swing feel too "boardy" for me so I returned them and swapped them for the Apex 3 Shafts. The difference was night and day. Smooth and easy swings generated good accuracy and distance (on a flush swing, my 3-iron goes 200') The forged feel is unparallel to investment cast in providing feedback. When you hit it on the sweet spot, there's nothing like it. If you don't, the clubhead will tell you. The perimeter weighting enlarges the sweet spot nicely so off-center hits near the heel don't punish you too badly, though toe hits will sacrifice distance (and sting your hands on a cold day). The forged clubhead provides awesome feedback about your swing and how you are hitting the ball. This is necessary if you want to improve your game; my Topflite Tours let me get away with too much; I couldn't tell if I was hitting it flush or not. This club is also the most beautiful one out there. It also allows you to work the ball, but if you have the swing, you can also nail it straight. The lower muscleback weight in the long irons allow for good height while the higher muscleback in the long irons prevent ballooning trajectories. With regard to a previous review about the club promoting Shanking - I have to give my ten cents worth. I talked to a Hogan rep about the issue as I was beginning to shank a few. He said that more likely than not, that shanking is not caused by the club but by either a swing fault or improper clubfitting (too upright causing the heel to hit the ground first). Make sure you get your clubs properly fitted by a professional clubfitter or your game will suffer! I realized that I was shanking because of a swing fault (too much hip turn on the backswing, not enough lower body resistance ie. shift then turn) causing my club not to release as it was trying to catch up thereby exposing the hosel first. Like I said, these clubs make you want to improve. They are beautiful, fun, long, accurate, workable and give you that ecstacy of a flush hit on a forged iron! I highly recommend them even if they are slightly pricey (but less than Callaway!)

Customer Service

WOW!!! That is all I can really say without going into a huge amount of detail about each iron. Let me just tell you that this is the best iron I have EVER hit. The feel and response you get from flushing one is almost like an orgasm. you just do not want it to end. You want to keep repeating that feeling...it basically makes you want to improve with each swing taken. I am positive that i will get an ace this year and break 80. Even on the kinda off center hits, it is not real harsh, not like you would expect. So go ahead and hit these, they are well woirth it.

I think one of the main things that make these better is that hogan builds individual sets, weight sorting and frequency matches each set.
now that is quality!!

This a follow-up to my 1st review in August 2000. I have been playing every week with these Apex Plus. These clubs are performing getting better and better every time I play. The feel of the forged steel is very sweet and very forgving. The Royal Precision Rifle Lite shaft produces excellent distance and control. Although I consider myself as an advance beginner, these clubs allow me to shape my shots. I must say that these irons are far more superior than any others in the market. In fact I thinking about buying another set.
BRAVO MR.HOGAN.

I AM NOT SAYING THESE ARE BAD IRONS. I AM JUST SUGGESTING THAT YOU HIT THEM FOR AWHILE BEFORE BUYING THEM. I HIT ONE DEMO IRON AND LIKED IT. I AM AN ASSISTANT AT A GOLF COURSE, AND ANOTHER ASSISTANT BOUGHT THE IRONS AND ENJOYED THEM. DURING THIS PERIOD, HOWEVER, HE STARTED SHANKING THE BALL. THIS IS NOT A GUY THAT REGULARLY HITS A SHANK. HE SHOOTS IN THE LOW 70'S AND CAN EVEN POST SOME UNDER 70 ROUNDS. WE AT THE GOLF COURSE JUST JOKED THAT HE WAS HAVING SWING PROBLEMS. UNDOUBTEDLY, THE HOGANS ARE THE BEST LOOKING IRONS ON THE MARKET, AND SINCE I LIKED THE DEMO (COULDN'T HIT THE ASSISTANT'S-LEFTY), I ORDERED THE IRONS. WHEN I GOT THE IRONS I WAS AMAZED AT THE LOOK, FEEL, PLAYABILITY, AND FORGIVENESS. I HAD A GOOD FIRST ROUND AND WAS PLEASED. THEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED. A PATTERN EMERGED. I WOULD BE PLAYING WELL AND THEN SUDDENLY OUT OF THE BLUE I WOULD SHANK THE BALL. I THOUGHT IT WAS A SWING PROBLEM, BUT WHEN I TRIED MY OLD IRONS THE SHANKS ENDED. THE ASSISTANT ASKED ME IF I HAD NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THE IRONS AND I TOLD HIM IT WAS NO JOKE. THE ASSISTANT THEN CALLED A BUDDY WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE APEX PLUS'S. FINALLY, THE ASSISTANT CALLED THE BEN HOGAN REP. HE ANSWERED THIS DILEMNA BY SAYING THAT BECAUSE THE CLUBS WERE WEIGHTED SO HEAVILY NEAR THE HEEL TO AID IN FORGIVENESS, THAT SOME PEOPLE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SHANKING THE BALL. I AM NOW SWITCHING TO I3 BLADES. THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD LOOKING, DYNAMIC, OR AS FUN, BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE THAT POTENTIAL FOR DISASTER THAT MY HOGAN'S HAD.

Yes indeed i got these clubs for $350, and they were only used once before-they were basically like new. I was extremely satisfied just owning these beautiful clubs. Thought I would have a tougher time hitting these than oversize, but I hit the Apex even better. Could not break 100 before these clubs, now almost breaking 90!!! It's like these clubs are magic- especially with the buttery-like feeling and the soaring trajectory. I see no reason to play anything else!!!

First time playing a forged iron.... why didn't somebody tell me about them earlier. These clubs force you to hit better shots -what I mean is that bad shots are worse than a cast club sop you better hit them well. Well worth the money paid for these clubs. Won't be comming out of my bag soon.

Hello. IMHO, these are incredible irons! I had been planning on selling my DCI's, and decided to go with forged clubs. I couldn't justify spending $700-$800 on clubs, even 990's, and not having them "hand" crafted.

After several testing sessions, I had narrowed it down to the Ben Hogan Apex Plus, MacGregor PCB Tours and the new Cleveland TA-3's. Of the group, the MacGregors and the Hogans were the "finalists." After 2 more test sessions and a fitting session, I bought the Hogans.

I could not be happier. I prepared myself for some difficult rounds, but after a lot of range time and lots of concentration on the course, I was surprised to find at how I had adjusted to them! I can only attribute it to the feedback that these clubs give. I instantly knew how I missed a shot and by how much on contact. I instantly knew just how "flush" I got the ball. It was a revelation...and on the fourth round with the Hogans in my bag, after opening with a front 47, I came in with a 39 to finish with an 84! My best 9 and 18 hole score at the time...

They have a very traditional set-up, good surface area at address and a thin topline. They do have some off-set in the longer irons, but they will not fight a push or slice and turn it into a draw for you. And that's the best thing about them. I won't get into the debate over cast's feel vs. forged's feel. Feel is too subjective to the individual. But, what I will say is that a forged club has given me an incredible sense of feedback. You will know your mistakes and will have an idea of how to fix them. And nothing ever felt like hitting one pure with the Hogans! Pure shot for pure shot, the Hogan Apex's were incredible.

I just bought these Hogans (on sale) to replace my Titleist DCI's after reading a lot of reviews on this and other boards. I have been playing for 4 years and have progressed from a total hack to a 14 hcp, so I thought it was time to treat myself to some new/better sticks. After playing my brother's Mizuno blades, I decided a forged club was the way to go. I got the Apex 4 shafts, and went with standard lie (which is 1* upright in Hogan clubs). Well, I just played with these clubs and they are awesome. The feel compared to my old clubs is incredible. They are far more accurate (except on miss-hits); I know exactly where the ball is going before I even look up. I can also work them left and right with relative ease. With my old clubs, the feel was so deadened I had nothing more than a vague sense that a shot was hit flush or not. Distance is probably similar to the DCI's (slightly longer maybe), though the trajectory might be a bit lower. The Hogans seem to put a lot of spin on the ball as well. The best thing about these clubs is how solid they are, and the sense of confidence they give you standing over the ball. The only drawback is they are too pretty to hit - I found myself polishing them after every shot. Hogan is back.

Maybe someone ought to tell Spalding that they need to advertise these clubs! My God these are the purest set of irons since the Nicklaus Muirfields. The only downside to these irons is, they're so beautiful you won't want to remove the plastic from them.
