Model Reviewed: Original Steelhead graphite #5

I've owned this club for almost two years, and in that time I haven't found a club that feels or sounds so perfect. The head is beautifully shaped and sits very square at address, and the shaft (regular flex) can easily cope with different speeds of swing.
Whenever you set up, you immediately feel that the ball is going straight down the middle, whether its towards the pin, or down a tight fairway.
The Steelhead seems to work just as well out of rough as it does on the tee or fairway, and is very forgiving.
I would love to know why Callaway replaced it. I havent tried the plus yet, but I doubt if this line of clubs could be improved.
If you can find one, get it because these are going to be worth a lot one day.

Model Reviewed: Stelhead 3 wood

The original Big Bertha Steelhead is far superior to the new Steelhead Plus. I own the original Steelhead for over two years now, and have also done some serious testing of the Steelhead Plus (I was thinking of getting it), and the two are in different leagues.
The original Steelhead is lighter, better looking, and has much better response on impact. The Steelhead Plus, is heavier, and very dull on impact.

The Steelhead I own has a regular shaft, and I can hit is between 220 and 240 off the tee, and about 210-230 off the fairway.

This club is great because you don't need to swing hard. A smooth swing, of average speed will get the ball going with no problem.

The original is hard to find nowadays, but if you are looking for a new 3 wood, I would definitely recommend spending the extra time to find this one.

I have heard rumours that the face of the original Steelhead has been know to cave in. I use this club regularly on the course and range, and must have hit hundreds if not thousands of balls with it, and I sitll have not had any problems. The only wear and tear is the typical fading of the finsh that is expected of this generation of Calllay clubs.

The weighting of the Steelhead Plus is very different from the original Steelhead. Maybe because of my swing, I prefer the original Steelhead, but I find the newer version is more difficult to hit a good shot compared to the older version.

Ball flight with the Steelhead is great,
perfect for a three wood. I also find that mishits, especially off the toe tend to draw back into the fairway which is great. Hits of the heel also tend to fade back into the middle. Extreme mishits usually hook, but that is still better than a disastorous slice into the middle of mowehere.

Compared to the Taylor Made Supersteel/Burner, this is more expensive, but worth it once you use it regularly.

I haven't played alot of rounds with my new 5 wood but from what i have played it is perfection! I also have the callaway biggest birtha driver and i love that too. I am a true believer that callaway is the best of the best. the only problem i have is the prices, i love the irons but the prices are a little too steep.

I have had a question, if my shaft breaks on my callaway biggest birtha driver what can u do if i send it in??

I think Callaway's generally have a tendency to balloon. Not as accurate as I would like. I really loved the club when I first got it, it makes a great sound on contact and can be categorized as a "fun" club to hit BUT I think the stock graphite shafts suck and I'd prefer to have graphite instead of the steel in order to get some more clubhead speed. Recently demoed the Titleist 975f and liked the feel, consistency and ability to shape shots with that club plus it has a killer trajectory.. low and boring.

A good club with good feel. Nonetheless I'm still going to ebay with it.

I absolutely love this club. I got a True Temper S400 shaft on this club (3wood), and really have confidence in it. This club feels solid when you hit it, and it makes a really recognizable sound when played by someone at the driving range. It makes a real solid smack that leaves you with a smile on your face every time you hear it. I really enjoy this club. I highly recommend this club to anyone shopping for a high quality fairway wood. I liked this better than the Titleist 975F, the Ping I3, and the Mizuno.

This a steady hitting club that easily produces nice and straight 190+ shots form the tee to fairway. This club is very forgiving on mishits. The graphite shaft on this club is a solid performer.

Model Reviewed: Steelhead Plus 4+, 7

I am writing this review before I read any others posted here so I can be as objective as possible. I have Steelhead Plus Strong 4 and 7 metals with steel shafts.

I have to say, I love these things. I have found that I can really jump on these fairway metals out of various lies with excellent, long results. I hit the 7 about 190-200 yards and the 4+ about 215, longer than I was hitting my previous 3 and 5 metals.

When hit "on the screws" you are rewarded with a very pleasing crisp sound and feel, before you look up, you know you have hit a great shot. The downside is that when I miss with these, it really takes away distance and trajectory.

For some reason it took me a while to trust these at address; I was closing the head so much (maybe getting used to the rib in the grip?) that everything was going left, really left. I made a simple, yet not initially confidence inspiring, adjustment that seemingly opened up the club face at address. First time I tried this on the course I hit the 4+ 212 yards uphill onto a par 5 in two. Needless to say, my confidence was restored quickly! This however, is also the reason for the poor results on miss hits, I tend to really "thin" them, sending the off the face of the earth. Of course, I am also usually swinging like a gorilla when this happens-an even, if alightly aggressive, swing will be rewarded.

Laslty, I like the ability to really wail on these things, this is why I choose steel over graphite shafts. All in all, if you can get used to these at address (the color and finish is beautiful) they are great fairway metals.

When I ordered my new 990's I didn't order a 3 iron and instead purchased the 9 Wood. It is very forgiving and hits straight. Great off the tee for those 190 yards par 3s.

Great club.I seem to be a little more accurate with it than my previous orlimar 15* It has a memphis 10 shaft and my orlimar had a steel shaft as well. This club has been extremeley accurate and long.I am very pleased.I would say it is about the the same as far as distance compared with the orlimar but I prefer the look of the callaway better so in turn it gives you more confidence which leads to more accuracy.Everyone get that.Bottom line I would not trade it for another and for only spending a 100 bucks that was a bonus.Try steel shafted fairway woods for a change you might be surprised at how well you hit them.
