Model Reviewed: Titleist 905R 9.5* with UST Proforce V2 Stiff Shaft

For at least 2 years now, I've struggled to find a consistent driver. I've found long drivers (Ping G5, TM 460) but I haven't found a driver that was consistent enough to make me put my 3 wood back in the bag (usually 260 or so down the middle with the 3 wood). My search is finally over.

I have owned the 905R for a little over 2 weeks and have hit 10 or buckets of balls with it and played twice. I LOVE THIS DRIVER. It just gives me confidence at address and the V2 shaft has low dispersion so I can take a rip if I want to.

I'm not as long with this driver as others (probably around 280-290 on average drive) but I'm consistent with it. I hit 7/7 fairways the first time out with it and 6/7 the last time with the 1 being about 5 feet in the second cut. The drives averaged around 290 yards. This club just fits my swing pefectly. Looks nice at address and doesn't feel or look funny like some other drivers. It also has that "FEEL" when you just pop one in the screws. You can just close your eyes and know its going 300+ down the middle.

I have two pieces of lead tape on the back of my driver and that just adds enough weight to keep me in tempo.

I think the combo of low spin, good launch angle and a good shaft make this work for me.

Lord knows I've looked long enough and spent enough $$$ trying to find the right driver. I've literally hit everything from a R7 460 TP all the way to a Bang-O-Matic Driver.

This driver is the best combination of feel, control and distance I've found and I got it for $200 brand new at a local shop. You can't beat that.

I have used this site many times so I decided to go ahead and contribute. I purchased this driver a couple of weeks ago and it did not take long to notice a difference. The difference is not so much in length for me, but in accuracy. To me it is forgiving driver. Golf is so much about confidence and this club seems to help me in how it sets up, forgiveness on mis-hits, even down to the sound and feel of the club hitting the ball. I am righ-handed and I have been working to eliminate the left side of the fairway on my drives. So far, this club has made it very easy for me to hit a consistent soft fade which keeps me out of trouble most of the time.

I purchased mine off of Ebay at a good price and obviously recommend giving it a try.

I was afraid to purchase a Titleist driver because I have a 10 handicap and medium swing speed.

The club sets square at address (unlike most other 10.5 degree drivers which are closed...very frustrating if you are fighting a hook) and looks beautiful. It's also heavier than other drivers (you can feel the club head in your swing instead of superlight, whippy clubs).

For good swings, this club has great feel and good performance. Not as forgiving on off center hits (but not horrible) as other brands (Callaway).

The jury is still out...I like Callaway drivers but the closed face (and high ball flight) is irritating. They are more forgiving, however. I'm sticking with the Titleist for now.

Other notes: The Callaway BB 460 is solid but that white line on the club face is not for me. The 460X sounds bad and didn't performance as well. The 454 was better than the 460X for me.

I'm late 40's and have been golfing for about 40 yrs. I would characterize my swing as a smooth tempo.
I recently had my swing analyzed on a launch monitor. The Pro tried about 6 or 7 set-ups (shafts, lofts, stiffness) until we found the one best suited for my swing dynamics. It does cost $, but I would highly recommend the process for anyone searching for a new driver.
Without listing all the technical results, the winning combo was a 905R with 10.5* and Aldila NV regular shaft. Great results. About 245 total yds, low dispersion and penetrating ball flight.
I love the driver - positives: distance, control, the square set-up (I don't like drivers that set-up closed), traditional head shape and sound at impact. Titleist truly does make excellent equipment. And great value - bought it off EBay for $170.
Last thing - the Pro also recommended a few different balls to further reduce my back spin, as this also has a positive impact on results. Bottom line - get tested on a launch monitor and use the correct balls - don't just go out and buy the balls used by Phil and Tiger.

I bought this club and have played three rounds with it. I love it. I previously used a Nike Ignite 450cc with an NV 65, but this club hits so straight compared. I love the sound of impact that it makes, and I am hoping to shoot consistently in the 80's with this purchase. I am hitting a lot more fairways that is for sure. Thank you Titleist

I just bought this driver yesterday for 250 and i went out and played a round today and I WAS AMAZED!!! I've been using the 905S, which is also a great driver, but a wanted to try a 460. With this shaft i can hit it so straight and solid with a nice medium, piercing trajectory. I played at the Hawks Prairie Golf Club in Lacey, WA and i hit 12 of 14 fairways and all were over 275. I've always been able to crush the ball but this driver was in a whole other realm. Anyone second guessing themselves about buying this driver is insane. BUY IT AND LOVE IT

I'm so happy with this driver.

I used to be a single figure handicapper and after a long break I have been playing for the past 5 months and decided to go no holds barred on buying the right equipment. I don't like to tinker with equipment so I'd rather find something that I like and then concentrate on my game- a bad workman blames his tools.

So, I spent 3 weeks trying out drivers all over the place. I've got no loyalty to any brand and if someone had handed me a brick on the end of a stick I would buy it if it worked the best. Anyway, I tested the latest MacGregor, Nike, Taylor Made, Bridgestone, Ping, Cobra and Callaway Drivers with a myriad of shaft options.

I can say, without any hesitation, that the Titleist beats everything else I tried out hands down, all day every day. I was using my trusty Hawkeye (I'll never get rid of it as it is so forgiving but it's like a 3 wood compared to new technology) as nothing moved me enough to make me believe the added distance of the 460cc was met with the same level of forgiveness.

The 905R gives you fantastic distance (I did get an extra 10yds out of the Ping G5 tho) but, infinitely more important, it gives you confidence standing over the ball and the ability to shape shots with ease. I'm also finding that I'm getting away with murder hitting some shots off the toe and only losing about 25yds.

I can't say enough about this club. If you are serious about golf and you want equipment that will enable you to do whatever you want with the ball and keep it in the fairway, look no further. If you want to feel all warm and fuzzy because you hit it an extra 10yards past your mates (and into the rough) go get yourself a Ping G5 and watch your scores stay the same.

If it is good enough for Ernie Els and Adam Scott, it's plenty good enough for every one else on the face of this planet. I'm amazed such a top quality club is so easy to use.

For the record, the G5 was second in my pecking order for a new driver but, then again, Roger Federer is the best tennis player in the world and everyone behind him is playing a different game. Ping-schming. Titleist rule supreme.

Also, the price on these has dropped dramatically (the 907 will be out in a couple of months) and you'd have to be crazy not to capitalise on this. I got mine for AUD400 (USD310 ish) and you guys in the U.S. will get them cheaper, no doubt. Hurry up before they stop making them....

Nike Sasquatch- nonsense
MacGregor- long but hard to control. V hot off the face.
Ping G5- shaft is too long but distance was good. Not ideal for feel and not nice standing over the ball.
Taylor Made R7- all hype and bs.
Bridgestone- not bad but dead feel off the face.
Callaway FT-i- v nice, perhaps would go for one of these if the 905R didn't exist.

I recently purchased a new titleist 905R driver with a proforce V2 stiff shaft 9.5 degree. I used to use a Cobra sz 460cc with NV shaft 10.5 degree. I used to have a such high launch oi think it was robing me of distance. when i hit the titleist it doesnt go as high but it carrys just as far. it relly gets out there in a hurry and with quite a bit of roll. It is very easy for me to work the ball draws and fades consistantly. And it is exeptionally easy to hit stright and just crank it oout there. 11 out of 10 for this club. I purchased this club for $250 dollars at a club demo at my local course Gold Mountain.

I bought a 905R just a few weeks ago and have been hitting it only on simulators and the local golf dome. So far I am extremely pleased with it. I have tried simular taylormade drivers and the Sasquatch and have found the look of the Titleist to be much more appealing. Also the Titleist has a much better sound and feel than any other drivers I tested. The sasquatch felt like it had a very hard face. Mine is a 9.5 degree with an Aldila NV stiff shaft its a great set up for me. I previously used the 905S with a grafalloy blue shaft which was much harder to hit.

I normally don't write reviews but I've had measures of success with this club and would like to give you an honest assessment. Thanks for reading.

I've played a Taylor Made R7 Driver for some time now and have absolutely no complaints. Very solid, but my younger brother bought me this club so I had to give it a run. Titleist 905R with UST Proforce V2 65. I prefer 65 instead of the stock 75. I definitely notice the difference in weight and my swing is around 105 mph so the 65g is perfect. Shaft consideration is second only to loft. I've played titleist products for a long time and they are honestly top in quality and performance; They dominate in the golf ball sector. They have proven forged blades and their brand coincides with Scotty Cameron on most of the worlds best putters. They are taking their profits and reinvesting it back into the technology. Same for many vendors now (which is good for us right?) I definitely think this sort of innovativeness has forced the improvement to the 905R. The classic pear-shaped head over address is very relaxing because of the aesthetics. It has a nice feel, and I can really feel the weight of the club head The USGA maximum .830 C.O.R. and 460cc is reached, but again the classic look does an excellent job to maintain the elegance of the Driver. This club is forgiving but still allows you to work the ball. I'm not the greatest at hitting a draw especially at 9.5 degrees, as I normally hit either straight or slight fade. I have been practing hitting draws with this driver and I am having more success than ever. It has a little different 'crack' when the ball is struck than my old 983k. It sounds good and not muted or clunky. It really feels like the sweet spot area is across the entire face. Although the 905R is definitely not shorter than other top drivers, I haven't noticed any distance advantage. My driving distance average is 270 and that's what I get out this one too. I wish I could tell you I now hit 325 yard drives, but it simply isn't true. Overall this is a long club with a classic look and is the most forgiving driver I hat hit yet. A keeper.

Recently, I have seen the release of square drivers by Nike and Callaway... yes, I know...

If I run across anyone with one of these gimmicks, it will be difficult to suppress a chuckle. It's like the broomstick putter of drivers!

You will never find one in my bag because the assistance they are marketed to deliver is so insignificant it makes me laugh.

Tee it up from the tips.
