Titleist 983K Titanium Drivers

Titleist 983K Titanium Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The 983K driver features a 365cc full pear profile. The larger head size compared to the 983E, produces a moderate launch angle and higher moment of inertia for playability. The slightly heel-biased internal weighting and deeper CG produce a moderate spin rate and an easy-to-square face. The result is a highly playable driver with an ideal initial trajectory, and long downrange flight.

I've been playing Titleist drivers for the last 5 years. I tried the 983K and fell in love with it from the first swing. With the 983K I can work the ball anyway I want. It has a solid feel. I looked at the Taylor Made 580 and the Titleist 983K and without a doubt the 983K is it.

I had just bought a Snake Eyes Fire Forged 360cc driver when I ran into the 983K at a local second hand golf shop.It had never been hit and the store owner offered to let me take it to a nearby driving range. For kicks I took it there and gave it a try. From the get go I started to hit long straight shots with an almost effortless swing. I have to admit it was addicting. I went back to the shop and traded in my Snake Eyes driver. This driver is absolutely amazing! I have played with it for over a month now and have not missed to many fairways. I am not a huge hitter and will not tell you tales of monterous 300 yard drives, but the distance is comparable with the new breed of drivers. The difference is in the accuracy where this club is uncanny. This driver has many shaft options to match to your type of swing and it would probably be a great idea to be fitted if possible. I have the stock 4560 graphite shaft in regular flex which as described is a perfect fit for me. My swing speed with the driver is in the 92 mile per hour range so I would guess this shaft would be suited for those with swing speeds in the mid 80's to mid 90's.While the price of this driver is rather high if you are in the market for a driver, I think it would be a mistake not to include this offering from Titleist in your tryouts.

I played with the 975L-FE this past year. I hit it great most of the time, but get the high rights when I really go after it - being a fade enhanced design has a bit to do with that. I decided to look for a new driver and I looked at a bunch! I demo'd several drivers for 48 hours each using them on the course and at the range. The 983K was the best and surprisingly the Speeder shaft worked best for me. I tried the YS6, the Grafalloy Prolite shafts in the K thinking the Speeder was too much shaft for me. It wasn't. I got the best results with it. My lower body outraces my arms on occassion so I get pushes and fades... the YS6 I got the high rights. The Grafalloy didn't seem to give me the distance I felt I should be getting. I decided to try the Speeder and I'm glad I did. I'm not a long ball hitter, but I was getting 220-230 carry into a slight head wind. I was very happy. I tested many other brands too and here's my results: 1. Titleist 983K Speeder (straight/longest) 2. King Cobra 350 SS (straight/avg dist.) 3. Ping si3 (long, but some big fades) 4. 983E YS6 (long/faded too much) 5. Launcher 400 (long but not straight) 6. GBBII (long but not straight) 7. Taylor Made 580 (hated it) I was surprised by the Ping as it performed well, but not as well as the 983K/speeder. The Launcher 400 was as long as any, but I hit some hooks and fades - shaft not quite right for me. The Cobra was very controllable, but lacked the distance. Good driver though. The TM580 was terrible for me. It came in last for me in both distance and feel. I would rank the 983K with YS6 and Grafalloy behind the Ping si3 and Cobra, but ahead of the GBBII, Cobra and TM580. As for value rating... I don't think any driver is worth what they ask for them, so I would rate a 4. The Launcher would get a high rating for value as they are $100 cheaper, but not the results I wanted.

Model Reviewed: 983K Graphite Design YS-6

Titleist has done it again. I like this club a lot. However, make sure you test all the shaft options. I have the Graphite Design YS-6 now but have a titleist 4560 stiff on order. Nothing wrong with the YS-6 but my swing responds best with the slightly softer tip that the 4560 provides. Titleist has 4 shaft options for stiff shaft but you can't find the 4560 (I believe it's made by Fujikura) in a 9.5 anywhere (except EBAY). I have spoken to a half dozen proshops and they have all mentioned that Titleist completely underestimated the demand for these clubs.

Customer Service

Not great. I called Titleist Customer service and they did not have a way to look up what shops had the 4560 Stiff shaft in stock.

Okay, i've just read most of the reviews on this driver and i can't believe with some of the claims..."30 yards longer," etc...if that is the case, it ain't just the Driver! you've got to attribute to ball technology and probably swing mechanics also! Simply put, the 983K with same loft, shaft, swing, and ball as the J-VS is probably only 5-8 yards longer in the air. the only major difference is increased playability, and slightly more roll (about 3-5 yards). Anyhow, i had it Titleist custom made with a ys-7 in x-stiff. The shaft is the probably the best for your money (i.e. comparable to the $250 757 shaft). Great for the "aggressive" but controlled swinger. I like the club, but prefer the "feel" of the D and J-VS. well, you can't have your cake and eat it at the same time. Overall, great club, great set-up as always from Titleist. if the Pros are playing it, so will you!

Damn good driver. It's an easy adjustment to change from a previous 975 model. No drastic change that will cause any miscomfort. The shaft is perfect on this club (for me). Not too light, and not too heavy. Lately, I haven't been striking the ball well with any club. However, this club is so forgiving, I feel like I'm cheating. I always seem to be in play. My previous driver, the 975J-VS would never let off the hook this easy. I am a bit unhappy about a few things. First is the feel. Titlest seems to lose feel in their drivers as they evolve. Then again, all brand drivers do. Second, the sound. Again, as the drivers evolve, they lose the glass-breaking sound I used to hear from my 975D. But ahh hell, with the performance this club is putting out, I can live without sound and feel. I'm getting older anyways.

Model Reviewed: 983K 10.5

I have always been a Titleist fan, and naturally decided to try the 983K . In Australia however the choice at the moment is between 8.5 and 10.5 for lefties, so I swallowed my pride and tried the 10.5s. The first choice was with the Titleist shaft, and right away this was very impressive. I then tried the speeder shaft and WOW! Even though I have a 10.5, this has a great trajectory with great carry, roll and accuracy. The 3W almost never a chance at the tee. The choice of this club, its loft and shaft has made me consistent long and striaght off the tee. I am getting 10-15 extra metres, not yards, but with great the accuracy. This club takes so much backspin off the ball that the loft is almost irrelevant. A point of note is that the speeder shaft suits quick temoed swingers, so try all the lofts and shaft options. Furthermore, my playing partners who were ribbing me for using a lady's loft, now 2 of them use 10.5 in the 983K as well. This is like cheating.

For those of you who doubt and are critical of previous reviewers writing they are getting 20 or 30 yards more with this club, then please don't read any further because here's another one of those reviews. I've played this club 10 rounds now and I am more consistently averaging 285 to 300 yard drives, with more frequent 300+ drives than before. Previously I was averging about 275 yards. The difference is about 265 yards in the air vs. 250 yards before with my previous driver which I thought I hit very well (Trinity Stilleto 9 degree). The even bigger difference is how much hotter the ball is after hitting the ground with much less backspin than previous generation drivers allowing some awesome roll. I'm now getting a lot more use of my 3 wood because the extra yards are reaching the hazards. Here's my advise...If you don't get fitted by a pro at least demo as many combinations of shafts & lofts that you can. Fortunately my golf shop had a wide range of both K's & E's and I used most of them. I was favoring the 8.5 E fuji initially because I thought the K was a little unwielding. I hit the E and thought it was OK but just wasn't sold. I don't think I was hitting the E any farther in the air than my previous driver (250 yards), but it was definitely rolling 25 to 40 yards once it hit the ground. As advertised, the E definitely gets more roll, but I was not getting the necessary hang time I need. Many of the holes I play I have to clear 230-250 yards of waste area and I was concerned the E wasn't going to cut it combined with the lower trajectory. Here's the secret to keep in mind. Many of today's drivers, including the K in particular, are made specifically for higher trajectories than most of us have been use to in the past. For many years the direction of drivers was to hit 7 to 8 degree drivers by stronger players while at the sametime keeping the trajectory low in the wind and get more roll. But the new generation of drivers are made to hit high because they have much less backspin than the old drivers allowing the ball to cut through the wind and getting more roll once they hit the ground. Therefore, you want as much hangtime as possible so the goal is to hit the ball higher. My concern being someone who plays in a lot of California coast wind, was hitting the ball too high against the wind. I would be lucky to hit the ball 240 with roll. This club has solved that problem. The problem is that for most of us who like those low screamers, which are a thing of beauty, it will take us a while to get use to hitting what we think is a not so attractive high ball, but this is how the K was designed...this is why the pros playing it are getting 30 -40 yards more distance. This is something we can all relate too, even Tiger plays with a 9.75 Nike driver when before he was hitting 7 degree drivers. A lot of pros are hitting 9-10 degree drivers now. Once you get over the trajectory issue, you will honestly see more distance. Another thing, this driver really appreciates a real golf ball instead of a range ball. Initially, I was hitting a lot of range balls which of course are harder causing the ball to roll up the face, resulting in even higher trajectories. For a long time I was focusing on the 8.5 K but then the pro let me hit a bucket of non-range balls and take it out for a round and the difference was clear. The 9.5 was the choice over the 8.5...more air & more roll...Something to keep in mind if you are demoing this club at the range. Thank god the pro was convincing enough and pushed me hard to try a higher loft club. I was very resistent. I had a tendency in the beginning to deloft the club causing a lot of major draws and hooks, but learned to use the club for how it was designed. My natural tendency is too turn my hands over fast hitting mostly draws anyway. The Grafalloy stiff is definitely stiff in this club and I'm still learning how to "work" all my shots.

Had purchased this originally with the YS-6 shaft. I had problems with duck hooking unless I swung very smooth. I have since reshafted with a Fujikura 757 Speeder. While extremely pricey ($249 for shaft) It made a world of difference. It's so important to have the right shaft in the club. Now I am more consistently in the middle of the fairway and this driver/shaft combo is out of this world. Sincerely the longest driver I have owned. Of course I now have over $800 invested!! Hey, it's only money guys and you only live once. Was it worth it? Is it a beautiful thing to have a Pro V-1 280 yards down the center of the fairway?? YES IT WAS WORTH EVERY RED CENT. Awesome Club, Titleist is the Head of the Class..
