Titleist 983E Titanium Drivers

Titleist 983E Titanium Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The slightly shallower front-to-back profile produces a flatter initial launch angle. The neutral internal weighting and slightly lower and forward CG location promote a boring trajectory and low spin. The result is a low spin driver for the stronger or high-spin player seeking optimal distance with trajectory control.

This review is probably for the minority of readers, but.... For my swing, I've found the E is the magic one from the 983 series. I have tried 4 different 983 drivers since I do not have access to a good launch monitor. My swing speed on drives avg 120-122 with top swings when I am swinging with no regard of direction of 130-135. I used to play the J and liked it. When I switched to the 983K 8.5 due to press hyping the K, I immediately realized that Ernie either does not swing much faster than 120, or he has something magic in his swing because I could not keep the ball down with my hard (upright) swing. I hit the longest drives with 70% effort. I backed the ball up in the fairway many times on softer ground. I play a stiff Fujikyra Pro95 44" shaft which helps mildly. I think Ernie and Phil play X or XX stiff. I ordered an 7.5 and 8.5 983E, planning to sell the K. My first round with the 8.5* E, with a slightly softer shaft (stock Speeder S-flex tipped 1") I beat my previous best on 2 of the par 4s, one was a slight downhill which I got 25 yards of roll. I have always carried my 983K to about 285, but carrying the E to the same spot resulted in roll to 310. I was trying to rip eveything all day, hitting both E & K side by side. On milder, 70% swings there is not as much difference in distance. On hard swings, the K causes my ball to peak and drop, the E does not. I'm convinced that the K is for average swing speed players and/or mid-high handicap which wants game improvement due to the wide head and moment of inertia. I am also further convinced that the K is NOT as optimum for people with a fast, upright swing in excess of 120mph, especially those with a positive launch angle, the 983E has resulted in more boring drives and much less ballooning on max effort swings. Maybe the K has more dynamic loft due to low center of gravity, but the E definitely works for me. Could this be why Love and Daly use the E? I am trying the 7.5 E next to see if I lose carry, if so I will stick with the 8.5 E. I think the press has hyped the "higher loft" which is great for average swingers. Super high swing speeds do not follow the same dynamic and even then, attack angle and natural launch angle are more important than driver loft because they can vary the effective loft by 5-6*.

I am new to the world of big headed drivers. Last week i acquired a Titleist 983E (8.5 deg), with an X-100 steel shaft. Just a couple of words to say. Holy S***. Now i understand why people are so concerned about new equipment. The head is so big it gives way to much confidence to kill it. I had a 60 yard pitch to a 400 yard hole. Felt like Phil Mickelson for a small strange moment. It feels illegal!

After trying both E & D, I opted for the E due to the smaller head. This club will NOT put you on the P.G.A tour, nor will you MAGICALLY average 300+ drives, but it is a very good club. It provides a very solid feel at impact, and the ball flight is consistant. The shaft type is very important, as well as possessing a good, repeatable swing. Titleist continues to produce high performance equipment with this club.

Please see the feedback 3 or 4 down from "Cowboys1" . He has exactly the same opionion than me about the 983E. The ball flight is not very high, but if you keep it on the fairway, the roll is incredible. I have never had a driver with half of the roll of my 983 E. Probably it comes a bit from the steel shaft i played it with, but i don´t think that much. The driver is also very forgiving and very nice to handle, a lot better than the 984K (in my opinion). If you want a driver with a very low trajectory and a very good roll, take this one, and you will have some very long and straight shots.

Anyone can baloon a ball with the right (or wrong) swing no matter what you hit. I think the last guy is a cleveland rep. Anyway, I love this driver. I tend to hit everything a little too high and this driver did something I was not expecting. It hits it only a little lower than usual but the ball hangs in the air alot longer than other drivers (for instance the K). The ball goes further because of it. If you match this with the DT Solo ball which is low spin you can just smash it and it goes forever then hits the ground running. I routinely get 320 yard drives and even further when the ground is hard. I had the J before this and it hit the ball a little higher and I didnt get the distance or roll that I get with the E. Let me talk about feel. I hate a squishy faced driver. The Taylor mades feel squishy to me and I dont ever feel like I caught the ball well (with the exception of the 510 which is not very forgiving). The K feels a little bit like this too me. A little squishy...not too bad...but just enough to annoy me. The E on the other hand feels much like the J but with more forgiveness and a penetrating trajectory (even more so than the JVS). I have owned all of these clubs BTW. If you have a higher swing speed 100+ and tend to hit the ball high then you need to try this club. I thought the K was the best club before I tried the E. Titleist seems to be pushing the K harder than the E and I dont know why.

I demo'ed it for 18 and i was impressed with carry and accuracy but.......for being a reduced spin driver. I would call that false advertising. It ballooned on me like crazy 5 yards of roll!!...COME ON!! You have problems with ballooning/high spin. Keep looking maybe towards the cleveland launcher 400. The price is ridiculous too. I have an all titleist bag...except for my driver.

Switched to the 983E as i play on a very hilly and windy course. All the other drivers I've used tend to ballooon the ball up, especially into the wind. As a result I wanted a driver that would produce low and boring shots. So far the 983E seeems perfect. Fitted with the Fujikura Speeder stiff shaft, 9.5 deg loft and slightly thicker grip. First ever shot was 20 - 25 yards past my previous best, this is on a 360 yard hole that does nothing but climb towards the sky - very steep. Other holes I was driving bunkers I couldn't reach before. Put a good soloid swing on it and watch the ball launch like a bullet. Great club.

Customer Service

Bizarre. Ordered the club and was told it would take 2 weeks. 3 weeks later no club. Pro rang titleist who sais they didn't have any 983E heads in the country and wouldn't have until October. Cancelled the order, swapped to the 983K, told to wait 3 weeks and 1 week later the 983E turns up!!!!

Let me start by saying that my 983E has 8.5 degree loft and is coupled with a custom UST XL ultralight S-flex shaft (not offered through Titleist). This club is big, big, big! The trajectory of the ball will not invite any "oooos and ahhhhs" from your playing partners until you drive past their balls to get to yours in the fairway. If you are looking for a driver that spins the ball giving you that "hanging in the air" ball flight, then this is definately NOT the driver for you. However, if you are looking for long drives with low spin that allow the ball to roll forever, then you are reading reviews for the perfect driver. (In my opinion, lower drives = more accuracy and less trouble). The trajectory from the 983E is very low and boring often making the distance of your drive look misleadingly short from the tee. However, the 983E offers some workability without sacrifcing forgiveness (although forcing an extreme draw/hook can be tough). Hitting balls about 1/2 inch off the sweetspot only handicaps me about 10-15 yards. If you are looking for a long driver with pretty ball flight and lots of forgiveness, check out the Cobra 427cc and 380cc. If you want a true player's club that will set you apart from the rest, look no further than the 983E. Did that sound like a commercial???

Best driver on the market at the moment, from looks to distance to playability, this club has it all. Fuji Speeder isn't all its cracked up to be, but the YS-6 shaft makes the ball fly. Very deep clubface takes some getting used to, but the tradeoff is that even poorly struck balls will not put you in too much trouble, try it before you buy though, $300-$400 is alot of money to spend on a club that is only hit 12-14 times a round.

Amazing. I was astounded by my J-VS. Then, I carried the ball w/ the E 15 yds longer than carry+roll w/ the J-VS. Fairways are wider, greens look bigger, and strokes are dropping.
