At the urgings of my pro I updated my swing, as well as, my TM clubs by a generation. The R540 with the stiff shaft needs a flatter and firm swing and a real focus on hitting the ball square. I have never hit drives approaching 300 yards so consistently! I am visiting golf course that ate me alive before and going at their greens on par 5's in two. This club is for any player wanting to shave 3 to 4 strokes on each nine and with the patience to adjust for a longer swing and steeper arc. A great asset to the game once you connect!

Was eager to try R580, as all my other clubs are TM. I was VERY disappointed. One I tried was R580 9.5* Stiff Shaft. I have a fairly high swing speed ~105 mph, and is seems that the shaft was torquing on me. It would leak right big time or just out and out slice. I could not compensate with a stonger grip or closing stance. I want back to the Firesole 9.5* S-90 and had no problems. I then tried a Titleist 975J-VS 9.5* with Stiff Fujikura Speeder shaft. It was like night and day coompared to the R580. The 975J-VS was consistantly longer and very controlable and predictable. I bought the 975J-VS.

Must say that the ball absolutely jumps off this club. I purchased the 510 and played in a scramble a week later. Of course, I let it rip and found myself hitting 330 yard drives on some holes. Most drives were down the middle, too!! The only concern for me was the stiffness of the shaft. I could probably use something a little stiffer, but that requires custom ordering. I guess I'll trade in for the legal version and see how that feels.

For a beginner who is still working on his swing, I would say that this driver gave me confidence and satisfaction. Very forgiving, long and straight.

Very briefly, this club is amazing! Played the ERC before, and there's no comparison. Hit it on the head or toe, it still goes far and straight. Hit it on the sweet spot (you'll know it - feels great!), it rolls 300.

Rich Beem won with a legal R580. Both the legal and illegal drivers have an "R". The difference is that the illegal club has a bald spot in the center of the face, the legal club has scoring across the whole face. In my experience with the illegal R540, it has definitely put me in places I have never been before on local courses. I'll probably opt to trade in for the legal version, but I sure could use the extra distance...

I previously custom ordered a 300 series driver and received it in less than 2 weeks.

Just FYI: I was curious about whether the club was legal or not after reading some of the reviews here. If you go to taylormadegolf.com you will find that the R500's that were released prior to the newest USGA decision are in fact ILLEGAL. However, according to the website you can go to your local Taylor Made retailor and exchange the club for a new USGA conforming R500. There's much more info on the website so check it out for specifics. Thought you all might like to know.

Customer Service

Well, they're willing to exchage illegal clubs for legal ones so that speaks for the companies integrity

To the person that posted this club as being illegal. You need to update your information. This club is not illegal. In fact, Rich Beem recently used this driver to win the 2002 PGA Championship.

I don't really understand why the reviewer below cannot hit the sweetspot consistently. We are talking about 400cc here. My recommendation is get a good coach. Back to my review. The length is exceptionally long. It is straighter than the 300 series but the feel is only average. Sweetspot is noticeably larger than any other drivers tried.

Decided to buy an R580 for the hell of it even though I love my Cobra 350SS. Generally speaking all my mistakes with the Cobra are left(hooks). Hit the range with the 580 and this club is very long IF you hit it on the screws. On the course had the taylormade hitting anywhere but straight. I really dont understand how this club is not more forgiving with its huge head and sweetspot. I wanted to like it so bad but just could not get consistent with it. I started slicing the ball again and had not done that in months. Went back to the range to fix the slice I thought I had developed again. Hit my irons fine and had a nice high draw with the cobra. There is no reason to go out like I did and buy one thinking it would improve you by so much. If you are a consistent driver of the ball you may gain more yards than ever with this club, it is a hot faced driver. But anything off center punished me really bad with the 580.
