Model Reviewed: Callaway FT-3 Fusion driver

I have the FT-3 in 11 degree loft with the stock NVS for Callaway 55 gram reg flex shaft. I selected this driver based on a launch monitor session at Golfsmith. I hit about 6 different drivers before selecting the Callaway FT-3 Fusion. It is a little pricey, but I got in on the special deal from Callaway and also received a free Fusion fairway wood. I sold it for $150 to offset some of the cost of the driver ($399). At net $249, it is a great value. My swing speed with a driver is in the mid-80s and I hit my driver approx 220 yards on the average. With most drivers, if I go after it, then the result is a hook that is either way left of the fairway in the rough or in the woods. This reg flex shaft is strong enough for me to really go after it if I need to without fearing the snap hook. It plays more like a firm in my opinion. I can step on this one when necessary and get 10 extra yards on those long par 4s. Personally, I love the sound and the feel of this driver. It is different feeling and sounding than anything else on the market. I find most either love it or hate it, so your mileage may vary. I can tell exactly where on the face I hit the ball too which is unusual for a 460cc head. I enjoy hitting the FT-3. It is the best driver I have owned to date. I find it forgiving, long, and very accurate...what more can you ask for?

Amazing! That's the best way to describe how this driver works for me. Having previously tried the X460 with not so much success, I picked ut the FT3 at a demo. Being a notorious slicer, I have tried to stay away from drivers, or woods for that matter. Not any more.

On my first round with the FT3 in the bag, it seems missing the fairway is almost impossible, although I must admit, I sliced it twice. But only twice. The FT3 may not be spectacularly long, but for me it is very consisten. It is also a big plus that it does not look too big, even if it is 400+cc

WOW! Got the Fusion FT3 Driver with a sweet deal that also allowed me to pick up the 3 fairway club as well. I had been searching for the right driver and pounded alot of balls. Even had a club made for me that I thought I hit pretty far. Let me tell you ...I have found the club. I couldn't wait to get to the course so I went to the driving range that evening after the purchase ... and like I said WOW!. After 5 balls I was hitting farther than I ever had and even straight. Best investment in a club that I have ever made. Thanks Callaway !

This was an upgrade from a Great Big Bertha II (380cc). I was trying to hold back from going 460cc but couldn't resist. I found most 460cc drivers comically large (like swinging a beach ball on a stick). As has been stated here, the FT-3's profile is designed well and doesn't look obscene at at address. It took me a month to get used to the GBBII before I started bombing it. This was not the case with the FT-3 on the range. By the 3rd ball I was making solid contact and by the 7th I had corrected a fade. I never had a driver I “figured out” that fast. Not to say I don’t miss-hit (I am a 12 handicap), but the FT-3 absolutely hits more fairways. In my case distance has improved as well on my best drives. On specific holes on my home course I have a a consistent 20 yard gain on my good drives. Most importantly, I hit the first 300 yard drive of my life with this club (ending up 90 yards from the center of the green on a 400 yard par 4). My best drive on this hole with the GBBII was 120 yards from the center. I’m not sure the increase in distance is from the club itself so much as from the increase in clubhead stability which allow you to risk a higher swing speed (in other words it is a good club to try and pound it). Some would say you should never try and kill the ball but I spent my first 15 years of golf teeing off with a strong 3-wood or 2-iron with a relaxed tempo. It seems I missed just as many fairways doing that so I am having much more fun now bombing it (and hitting more fairways with this new technology). Finally, while tempted to go with the “draw” model of this club I am glad that I picked the “neutral” version. When I miss-hit I tend to slice more than hook (thought I still hook on occasion), but the key word is “miss-hit.” When all the fundamentals line up and I sweep the clubhead and avoid the dreaded “outside to inside” swing path, the neutral weighting blasts it straight down the middle.

Customer Service

Callaway Pre-Owned is awesome. Both my FT-3 and GBBII came from them in like new condition with free shipping. Got exactly the degree and shaft I wanted as well. Callaway repairs are a step above as well... needed to change a shaft on a heavenwood and they took care of the shipping and had it right back to me with no questions asked.

This is the best driver I have ever played. I really am pleased with the way I hit it. I've grown to love the thud sound it makes when you hit it, and probably average 280 yards with it.

Until July 31, 2006, Callaway has a promotion going and you can get a free fairway wood if you buy the driver.

A fantastic club overall, if you hook the ball, get the fade driver, it can really help your hook.

I won an FT3 in a long drive contest last week (all contestants had to use a Callaway driver) and went through the optifit system yesterday to make my final order. After demoing several heads and shafts, the pro found the right combination of shaft (Extra Stiff) and head (neutral 9.5). This club is much more forgiving than my 983K. I didn't notice a big difference in length, but I will find out on the course when my custom ordered driver comes. The sound only bothered me on the first swing. While I didn't pay for mine, the price seems comperable to the other drivers out there. Make sure you go through the optifit if you can.

Customer Service

The Optifit system was really cool...what a difference having the right shaft and head has on the end result. Hopefully it won't take too long to get here.

I demoed this club for the last week and I have to say I expected more. It is not worth $400 dollars, maybe if it came with an upgraded shaft. If you are going to buy this club, invest in a better shaft. Overall a decent club though.

After playing with the 983K for 2 years, I was looking for more forgiveness. I demoed many of the current drivers: Sasquatch, G5, 905R, Cobra X Speed, Callaway x460, Callaway FT-3, TM R7 425 and R7 460. Of these, I liked the Taylor Made 460 and the FT-3 the best. I preferred the sound of the FT-3 - a thud versus the loud piercing ping of the of the X460 or Cobra. The FT-3 is EXTREMELY FORGIVING AND LONG. I preferred the FT-3 over the R7 460 because it makes the ball go straight I sprayed the ball more often with R7 460.

Bought the club used off eBay for $195 not including shipping - price at most golf shops is $399, which is steep.

Best driver I've ever hit - bar none.

My current driver was the Titleist 905T with an Aldila NV shaft.
However I have hit the FT-3 with the exact same shaft and I have to say its 10-15 yards longer than my 905T. On good strikes the ball comes of the face so much hotter than the 905T.
However it is not as easy to shape as my Titleist and that is what is stopping me from buying one.

Model Reviewed: FT3 Driver 11 degree draw bias, reg. shaft

Have been demoing this club for several rounds. Current driver is BB II. This driver is very forgiving and much longer than BB II. Draw bias and 1 degree closed eliminates slice side of fairway, yet does not over hook unless you try and swing too hard. Very easy to hit.
