Now here's an interesting set of irons that I bought on E-bay for $49. The set have Made in USA labels with serial numbers, Fenwick Stiff 90 gram graphite shafts, Stock Top flite grips which feel somewhat corded (the grips do tear up my hands a bit). This used set looks practically new, the previous owner used just a few of the clubs seldom - Not a scratch on the soles or backs nor shafts.

Compared to my Ping i3+ with JZ Stiff steel shafts the Top Flites are a mixed bag for my game. I love the Top Flite Wedge thru 7 irons. I hit the short irons farther than the Pings. I'm consistently nailing 150 yard Wedges with Taylormade TP balls when I go for it. The accuracy of my shots is equal to the Pings. The Top Flites have a nice heavy and solid feel. BUT, I'm not as happy with the 5 to 3 irons. The heads get progressively smaller, the top line of the face thins out. And somehow my shots tend to go wild with the 3 and 4 irons. And I'm an accuracy monster with my Ping i3+ Three & Four irons.

So are these old USA Made clubs worth the $49 I paid - YES! Are they equal in quality to my USA made Pings? - No.

Yet, I'll keep them for a while as I enjoy having a change-of-pace set of clubs. I like variety, even if my handicap may suffer. I'm a hobby golfer, not a serious competitor.

Ludicrous! In the past two years I've bought and sold over a dozen sets of irons and at least 25 drivers / fairway woods. I'm using Callaway VFT Driver & Woods & 2i Hybrid with great success & the Ping i3+ irons have reallyimproved my game.

I'm spending my children's legacy on E-bay.

Great set of Irons, have them 10 years, stiff steel shafts, long and forgiving, looks great at address, mid and long irons easy to hit, short irons and wedges slightly chunky but plays well, looking at others but very reluctant to change

Customer Service

Tried to order Gap Wedge as there is 11 degree gap between pitch and sand wedge with no luck as it was discontinued

I recently gave my son this set so he could replace his MacGregors VIP irons. His gave has improved since he started playing them. I got them for my travel set, and found them to be okay. I put them ahead of Cobra's. I've been playing a long time (H.S. and College golf included) and outside of my old set of Ram Tour Grinds, these are fairly decent.

So here I am again 1 year after my last attempt to replace these clubs. Because I haven't been man enough to take the ridicule (and often amazement)from others about these clubs I keep trying to upgrade. This season I played Nike Pro Combo forged and Taylor Made r7's trying to put something new in my bag. Both went on ebay after a few rounds. Nothing I can find will match the swing weight and distance of these Top Flite Tours I bought 10 years ago. Maybe they're just the right fit for me but I still believe they are the most under rated clubs in golf.

They don't appear to be so under rated in Europe where they are fetching up to $250 USD used. Apparently they can gain a reputation when people aren't so worried about perception and logos. Spaulding might have made some mistakes prior to selling out to Callaway but these clubs were not one of them.

I'll just keep re-gripping and scoring low instead of trying to shave strokes for the sake of appearance.

Non existent anymore.

Model Reviewed: TOP FLITE TOUR W/ MUSCLE SHAFTS (R80 GRAPHITE)

I PURCHASED THESE IRONS AROUND 1999 FROM A LOCAL PRO SHOP. I PAID AROUND $500 FOR THE FULL SET OF IRONS. I TRIED OUT MORE EXPENSIVE CLUBS, BUT THESE CLUBS LOOKED THE BEST TO ME AT ADDRESS AND FELT GOOD TO SWING. MINE HAVE THE R80 GRAPHITE MUSCLE SHAFTS. I LIKED THE MUSCLE SHAFTS BECAUSE THEY WERE LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN STTEL AND GRAPHITE. I WAS 27 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME AND SWUNG HARD SO NORMAL GRAPHITE SHAFTS WERE TOO FLIMSY FOR ME. THESE IRONS HIT A BIT LONGER THAN MY PREVIOUS SET, GOLDWINS, WHICH WAS FINE WITH ME. I HAD TO GET RID OF THE GOLDWINS BECAUSE I KEPT SNAPPING THE SHAFTS JUST ABOVE THE CLUBHEAD. GOLDWIN KEPT REPLACING THEM, BUT I WAS TIRED OF BEING WITHOUT A CLUB FOR A WEEK AT A TIME. THE TOP FLITES HAVE A SOLID FEEL AND GREAT TRAJECTORY WHEN HIT CORRECTLY. THE BAD REVIEWS MUST BE ON THE LATTER VERSION OF THIS IRON. I WAS LEARY OF THESE CLUBS DUE TO THE LOW PRICE, BUT WAS CONVINCED THAT BECAUSE PGA PLAYERS WERE USING THEM, THEY WERE PROBABLY ALRIGHT FOR ME.

I actually only have one of these clubs. A 2 iron and I can spank it 200m off the tee no problem at all.
The rest of my set is the earlier Spalding model 'Tour Edition' which have the same funky bar running thru the cavity back.

All in all I think this is a very nice club, for all the reviews that think these are beginners clubs they must be on some drugs.
I've been trying to replace them lately. (time I got a new set after 15 years with the tour editions) and it's been quite tough.
The only ones I am comfortable are those with a thin top line and small sole.
Most of the new mid handicap clubs are the size of a bus an hit a pretty awful ball. The Burner 09 clubs are the most over hyped, and over rated clubs on the market today... no question.
In my opinion I rate these clubs for feeling & workability with:
Taylor Made Tour Edition. Really nice club
X22 Tour. Although this just scrapes in)
Cleveland CG7 Tour. My favourite so far.
Wilson Staff Ci7. Great feel and looks like a tour iron but has a bit more forgiveness.

Over and out...

In the very beginning it was possible for me to try various irons from different companies, suprisingly the difference between irons was incredible, making a decision was down to the balance, feel & price. The Top Flite Tours stood out for the right reasons, over time they have since been reshafted and regripped, and still they return the goods that made me make my happy choice, guess they got it right, although the new models that are emerging look fantastic and some also feel good to, I find it hard to replace such a wonderful set at the prices that are being charged at todays prices, moral of the story, try before you buy as the highest price will not make you a better golfer, and the label of "all the gear but no idea" will not be put upon you.

I've been playing these clubs since i bought them new in 1997. I recently bought a set of Cobra S9 irons for $649 at Golfsmith thinking it was time to upgrade. After two rounds and 4 trips to the driving range I exercised my 90/90 option with GS and took them back for 90% store credit. I upgraded my bag instead of the 'ol Top Flite Tours.

I read through all of these reviews and got a good laugh. Some guys were posting twice just to state they could "buy these clubs at Wal-Mart" and "gave them away to beginning golfers" Wrong. These clubs were about $550 new and only sold in golf shops when they were available pre 2002. They were made by Spalding at the time. Now since Callaway bought the Top Flite name they reintroduced the "Tour" model. Different club. This must be the one in discount stores. Many of the bad reviews sound as if they're written by 15 year olds who won't wear a knit shirt without a little polo player on it because they won't look as cool. Bring your $700 G10's and 'll bring my cheapo Top Flites. You will lose. These clubs have secret Mojo... and they actually made a 1 iron!

Potential cons: The heads are smaller at address than modern "oversize" dinner plates. They are indeed a bit ugly compared to modern club design. But not as bad as any Nickent iron in my opinion.

I purchased these irons in 1997. I got the set, a bag and the "new" TM Burner driver for $800.00 with tax. Basically the clubs have set in the closet for the last 10 years.
The clubs were custom fitted for me, +1"long and 2* up. However, the clubs were made 1" long and 2* flat. This error was unknown until I picked up golf again this past year.
With the help of a professional clubmaker, the clubs were bent back to a standard lie. The clubs are a pleasure to hit now.
My 7 iron is 155-160 and straight (as long as my swing is good). I wanted to purchase new clubs, but the advice recieved from two professionals has been to stay with with what I have since "they are great clubs". They do not think I need another set until I get into the mid 80's. I fact, one of the clubmakers had a set a few years back and had good things to sy about them.
The clubs are forgiving, but not overly so. I hit some new Ping G10's and thought they were pretty nice, however, the Top Flite's look better to me at address due to the smaller head design. Basically, the Tour is a cavity back iron with a "muscle bar" in the cavity.
When I purchased the clubs, Top Flite was a quality golf equipment producer. If I am not mistaken, the company also made the Hogan line and sponsered some great tour players. I do recall seeing Top Flite producing a line for the discount stores in later years, perhaps that is where some of the bad reviews have come from.
As a value, I give these clubs a 5. You can purchase these clubs or the XL2000 series for $100 or so now. I am giving them a 3 in the overall rating for the 2* flat ordeal. If you are a golfer looking to pure your swing, I think these are a great product at a bargin price. Save your $$ until you are comfortable with your game.
