Before this purchase, I was using TaylorMade (1995 model) KNOCK-OFFS! I never used a REAL brand-name club in my life. It was time for a change, finally.

After trying many game improvement irons, my search narrowed down to the X-18, CG4, and R7 XD. These 3 are good clubs, however, the R7 XD's felt cleaner and easier to hit. And after using them on grass, I see what I was missing all along.

All my shots go straight. I already was a long hitter (175 with a 7 iron) but I am even longer with the R7 XDs (ball fires off the titanium face like I've never seen!). Miss hits stay online and if hit fat, still maintain good distance. Even my 3 and 5 iron which can be inconsistent, stayed straighter and longer than I have ever seen. These clubs are making me more exciting for the game of golf, if that is possible :)

I swing the club relatively hard but even the regular steel shafts were perfect. The only thing that was lacking in my game from moving onto the next level was consistency. These clubs are definitely going to provide that for me, in my run to be in the 70s! As a bonus, they gave me a free rescue club with the set. Great value!

All in all, you WILL hit long, straight, and clean with these clubs. I am very pleased and recommend them highly.

I tried hitting the Nike Slingshots, as well as the Cleveland CG4s at Golftown, and they were pretty comparable, I was waiting for someone to finish with the R7 XD, so I could compare all three. Once I hit the Taylormade, there was no comparison; I bought them brand new on E-Bay the next day for $499 US. I can't believe the improvement these irons have made to my game. My GIR are way up, and I've found that I'm a lot more confident using these irons. Even miss-hits off the toe are going straight for me. The thing I've found most impressive is the ball flight though, they get the ball up in a hurry, and the distance is unreal. It's true what Golf Digest's Hotlist says about the 6 iron. Let me know if you find one that goes farther. All in all, these are great game improving irons.

Today I finally got my new set of irons, the Taylor Made R7 XD's. Traded in a set of Hogans CFT, nothing but trouble with shafts breaking but thats another story.

Took them straight out to my course and can truely say these irons are everything that I hoped they would be. They are easily 1-2 clubs longer than my previous set on all the irons. I would normally hit an 8 iron to the front of a tricky par 3, today hit a 9 iron to the middle of the green into a stiff breeze.

The best part is that they are so easy to hit. Well done Taylor Made, had previous set of your clubs several years ago and was not impressed, these are far and away above everything else that is around, have tried lots of brands over the last 3 months, glad I tried these clubs.

Customer Service

Very good, had to get the irons made 3 degrees upright which meant they had to come from the States, took a liitle over 3 weeks but was kept informed the whole time.

I am a high handicapper ,took a few years off from playing but started back late last year with my 8yr old beginner set.
This year I wanted to upgrade to a good set of clubs. My Local dealer had a demo day ,and went in to try a few brands/models.
I tried out MX-23 ,X-18 ,and The R7XD's. I really can't say anything bad about the other 2 ,but just liked the feel of the Taylor Made in my hands ?? Noticed right away the size difference from my old set !! I have only played 1 round as of yet with the R7's. Will add to my review near the end of the season.

A high handicapper my whole life, rarely breaking 90, I bought OS2's last summer worked with a pro and carded a 76 and a couple of 78's last summer. Problem was I still had a traffic jam in the mid irons. The spacing between my 6, 7, 8 was a puzzle. Then the 5 iron and then I jumped to woods.

Early this season I hit a R7-XD 7 iron at the range and I was flying it over the 150 sign. I normally considered the 7 iron a 145 club.

So I went home with a set of gap thru 4 iron, and I haven't had any regrets (except that I relocated and haven't played enough to dial in the local courses).

However, the results are that with my new R7 woods and irons I can now occasionally reach 500 yard par 5's in two, and likewise occasionally only need a wedge into long par 5's.

Note that I still consider myself a high handicapper. I need to play a lot to be able to shoot below 90 consistently. These clubs work for me. I have always loved TM woods, but my previous two sets (Firesoles and OS2's) don't hold a candle to these.

BTW I gained a lot from switching from a great 540XD to a much better RX7 425 driver. Carry is longer and roll much longer.

Yardages for me (51 somewhat overweight desk jockey):

LW 70-80
SW 80-90
AW 100
PW 115
9I 130
8I 140
7I 150+
6I 160+
5I 170 +*
4I 170**

+* = I occasionally catch one that goes much further.

** Moe rare I catch a 4 that goes a lot further.

I carry an R& 425 Driver, R540XD 3W, R580 5 and 7 woods. With a putter this is 15 clubs, so the 5 an 7 tag team based on conditions of the rough. I play the seven out of moderate rough. If the rough is deep or benign I play the 5 wood.

Highest rating in all categories because they are expensive, but worth it.

I loved my Firesole Irons. Played them from intro to last summer. I could not rely on the 3 and 4 iron so last summer upgraded? to OS2's. I could now use the 3 and 4, but I still had a golf bag that needed an orthodonist. The change to RX7 XD irons was amazing. Give me a yardage and I now know the club to pick.

Previously I carried the "line" SW and LW, but with this set I have gone to the RAC Black SW and LW. It took a little adjustment from the fairway/rough, but I prefer them from sand/tight lies.

I bought a new set of Taylormade R7 XD's and they have totally changed my game. I've been playing off 10 for years and now I'm using these irons I've been shooting in the mid to low 70's. They hit the ball so long and more importantly straight. The feel arounfd the greens are excellent. The clubs are a little expensive but well worth the investment if you really want to improve your game.

Customer Service

I bought these new of eBay and got them delivered to my door within 3 days of placing the order.

If you don't think that technology has changed the game, then just try these R7 XDs. I have been playing golf for 30 years and have had them all and have never played with a set of irons that I have enjoyed more. My most recent irons were the Callway Hawkeyes which I have had for 5-6 years. I thought these were great until I played with the R7s. These irons are just sweet to hit! They are 1 to 1.5 clubs longer than my Hawkeyes and just feel great at impact. With the Hawkeyes, I would have to hit them perfect to get 150 yds on a 7 iron. I hit the R7XD 7-iron 165 during several recent rounds. I needed a Hawkeye 5-iron to go 165 yards. The ball flight is great with a nice trajectory and the feel at impact is like butter. These are also great looking clubs and the last set I will be buying for a long time.

Customer Service

I ordered these through my pro shop directly from Taylor Made and they were there in 5 days.

Model Reviewed: Taylormade R7 XD-Steel Stiff

I've been a huge fan of Muzuno Irons for many years. I overestimated my skill level and I've been using MP-33 blade Irons for about 1 1/2 years. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to hit one of my friend's Callaway X-14, and it blew my mind!!! X-14 was about a full club length longer than my MP-33s. Not only that, they were so easy to hit shot after shot... That evening, I was sitting before my computer and researching for the latest Tech Irons... I narrowed down my search to Callaway X-18 and Taylormade R7 XD. After a few days of ebaying, I've got myself a brand new R7 XD (paid $530). Yesterday, I went to the local 9 hole course to see how these will perform. The result, they are long and straight. I mean long. They are almost 1.5 ~ 2 club longer than my old MP-33s (my set was custom fit. they have +2 degrees on every club. ex) Pitching=49°) I never thought I would gain so much distance jut by switching my Irons. I used to hit my 9 Iron 125 to 130 yards, but now with R7 XD, I hit 9 iron about 145 to 150. After reading all review here, I knew they will be long but these clubs are LONG!!! It took me 3~4 holes to choose the right club, and after that, I was very comfortable with them. Trajectory is high, land soft, sometime spins back even with 3quarter swing. I worried about the workability, but I was able to shape some shots as I wanted to. I always thought that using not-so-forgiving Irons will improve my swing. And it did! But now, it is time to tear those tough course apart. It is very exciting for me to hit 150 yard with a 9 iron. Here is my dilemma; what am I going to do with my hybrid club since my 3 iron goes further? What am I gonna hit in the range of 90 to 135 since my pitching goes 130+ yard and my 52° gap wedge goes only 75 to 90 yard? Damn it Taylormade~ get me something to fill this gap!!!!!

Took a fews years off from the game due to a busy schedule, but now playing regulary again and needed new irons. My old irons were Wilson cavity back irons that were 20+ years old. So I decided it was time to upgrade.

While any new technology would have been a significant upgrade over what I was playing, these clubs stood out after hitting several idfferent irons. When I hit the ball solid it feels like I hit a feather not a rock liek my old irons. I added about 18 yards per iron over my old irons. I am a 19 handicap and now hit my 7 iron about 162 and much straighter with more consistency. The biggest bonus with these irons is how forgiving they are when you don't hit teh sweet spot -- which for me is too often. You just don't lose as much distance and they stay straight.

Really I don't have a bad thing to say. They are a little pricey but I went the ebay route and got them brand new. I am average height (6') and don't buy into club fitting for someone my size and ability level, so ebay worked out great. These clubs made all the difference in the world.

Love these irons! I have been playing for only three years but have played MANY different irons. I started with Tommy Armours, went to Titleists, then I played Pings, went onto 04 Big Berthas and then was pretty happy with X-18s. (Please don't ask me why or how I've gone through so many sets. There's a golf book in me somewhere!)

Let me break it down into three categories: the good, the bad, the unusual. First off the good. These irons feel great. The lightweight head is virtually non-existent when you hit the ball right on. It's "like buttah!" when you make perfect contact. When you don't make perfect contact, it's still not that bad (although, not as forgiving as say the Berthas).

Secondly, they look great. I don't care what you try to talk yourself into: if the clubs don't look good to you that makes a big difference (hence the change from Big Bertha's to X-18s). These look even better. They have a thick-er top line, but it's not off-putting. The design is not ugly like the RACs from TM. And, dammit, they just look good in your bag.

Finally, these clubs love to be hit with full swings. A common fault among 20+ handicappers like myself is a tendency to underswing. This club will pay dividends if you give it you 90-110% swing every time.

The bad: The price. Very expensive clubs for game improvement sticks. But that's the worst thing I can say.

The unusual: Well, TM has made these what they call "tour angled" meaning all your clubs play about 1 to 1.5 clubs long. So, the good news is I am now hitting my 7-iron 155 yards (just like my single-digit handicap friends), but the bad news is it's taking me some time to get my distances here.

Overall, these clubs are the best irons I've played. (And, I've played alot of them). I totally recommend these to anyone.
