Used to be a 6 and now I am a 10. Lack of play due to 3 kids and owning a business. Played all sorts of clubs and finally settled on the S9 after a demo day of numerous irons hosted by manufacturers. Very soft, easy to play a draw or cut. Ball flies 10-20 yards higher, but also 10 yards farther. The wind does not affect the flight much... suprising penetrating. The Nippons feel great, and load easily. I swing a 6 iron at 95 mph and I hit these very straight. Driver 102-108 mph. First round in 6 weeks and shot a 75 from the tips (7200 yards). Two under on the front, but I sniped a few drives into fescue on the back side. Can't say enough good things about these clubs. I tried Rifle 5.5 flighted and they felt like hockey sticks... lost 10-15 yards with all irons. Stay away from these shafts.

As a confirmed duffer, I bought these irons and immediately started hitting like a pro- straight and true, high trajectory & long, confidently hitting most greens in regulation. Took 10 strokes off my game, and now play a respectable low 90's. I tried the Wide Sole Fusions, Hybores, you name it, but with little difference in my game. These Cobras are fantastic. I went to Edwin Watts, they examined my swing, and I bit the bullet and got the recommended Senior graphite shafts. All the difference in the world (Can you tell I'm excited?). Now, if I could only put within 5 feet!

like others who read and heard such rave reviews, i bought a brand new set of these in the spring of 2007. maybe i wasnt as good then as i am now (highly doubtful) but i flat out could not hit these. i dont think i ever hit one further than 180 at the range and barely ever hit any greens. always short. club up, you might say, but if i cant get a 7 iron on the green from less than 150 out then somethings not right. i bought them from a reputable store in my town otherwise i would swear they were fakes. who knows, maybe they were? regardless, i now have some mizuno mx 17s than truly have improved my game and not only am i hitting greens, im dropping balls right on top of holes and even birdy-ing par 4's! i really cant think of one positive point other than that they looked sweet.

Model Reviewed: 2008 Cobra S9 ii

I purchased a set of 2008 Cobra S9 II irons with stiff steel shafts. I typically play blades (Ping S58's) but decided to get a set of game improvement irons as well. I have been very pleased. I typically shoot in the mid 80's. This weekend I shot a 79 and did not have to struggle to do so. I find the S9's to be extremely forgiving. They cover up miss-hits in an incredible way. The ball still seems to travel almost as far. I find that I am more relaxed hitting this set which contributes to a more solid and flexible swing.

I do find the short irons a little harder to stop on the greens. The wedge tends to roll about 0.5 ft to 3 yards past the point of impact on a high shot. Typically with a blade, I can back the ball up just a bit. This led to shooting for the middle of the green versus right at the flag which I think helped with consistency.

It is more difficult to fade the ball compared to the Pings but this is understandable due to the higher MOI. They can be faded but it takes more effort. However, no trouble drawing the ball.

These clubs are much more consistent than Callaway X-18's. I had a set of Callaway's and on occasion would get a wildly ballooning shot. The S9's seem to be more predictable.

The sweet spot is very wide and the amount of offset seems just right.

If you get a chance, try these out. They may be well worth it.

Model Reviewed: Cobra S9 irons

I'm a 66-yr old "Brit" who has played golf for over 35 years and used to score in the 70's. I read all the reviews possible on equipment and I have several sets. Unlike most reviewers, I'm not too shy to admit I may have made a bad buy. On the basis of reviews, I bought a set of R-flex graphite shafted Cobra S9 irons. After using the clubs for 3 months, I'm wondering, why all the hype? For me, I find that the S9's feel too light, such that I can't feel the heads and overall, the performance is just average, in terms of forgiveness and distance. For so-called Maximum game Improvement irons, the 4 to 6 irons are not as easy as my other clubs. I have 2 sets of Macgregor M565's (in graphite and steel) and sets of graphite-shafted Adams Idea A2 and Adams Idea Tech OS plus a set of steel-shafted Callaway Big Bertha Fusion. I bought all of these from ebay sellers in the US. Despite being a 2005 model, I find the M565's easier to use than the S9's and certainly longer (check their reviews on this site) and the Adams clubs with their hybrid long irons are very easy to use. Don't be too proud to use hybrids, it's results that count, not egos and remember, a lot of pros are now using hybrids. You may wonder why I have so many sets, well it's because I like to test clubs, within the limitations of my swing, so I often switch sets or even mix them - it gives me an additional interest. Finally, not to be completely negative, for me, the only real plus for the S9's is that they're very pretty clubs, so for you guys who like to look and admire your clubs, then the S9's are for you ! Maybe when your clubs look great, it helps you play better.

Customer Service

Cobra Golf really disappoint me. I've mailed them several times, just for advice on how best to increase the swing-weight of the S9's and they haven't bothered to reply. I live in Indonesia at present, but I'd bought the S9's in the USA. I regret to say that I know that if I was now in the USA, they'd respond quickly, because of the threat of US Consumer Laws, but because I'm overseas, they know that they're not subject to such Consumer Laws, so they don't give a damn for "foreigners". I know that such displays of "double standards" arise with other Companies, but isn't it time such Companies showed a genuine interest in overseas customers, rather than being forced by Consumer Laws. If you wonder why I don't contact their Asian Service agencies, well if you went to such places, you'd see how poorly equipped and trained are the staff and also how unprepared they are to help, since there's no effective Consumer protection over here. I'm currently on Cobra's mailing list, but I intend to unsubscribe.

I decided to buy a set of S9's, based on reviews here and elsewhere. The best part of my game has always been my iron play and I was keen to try the S9's. Since I'm now a young 66-year old, I went for graphite and I bought a new set of R-flex graphite shafted S9 irons on ebay for $455.00. Having used them for a few months, I can't understand why all the hype. I find the irons somewhat too light to feel the heads and this makes the 4 and 5 iron not so easy to use and as for the 6 to gap, they're just "middle of the road" for me, nothing special. I suppose the only plus point is that they're very pretty clubs, if appearance is important for you. In contrast, I have 2 sets of Macgregor M565's (one set steel-shafted and one set graphite-shafted) and I find these M565's easier to use and better for distance. I also have a set of Adams A2, which I feel, are better than these Cobras. So my advice to potential buyers is to check out Macgregor M565's or Adams first, as you can get great deals on ebay, like a set for about $200, you won't regret it.

Customer Service

As a result of finding the S9 irons too light for me, I mailed Cobra Golf for advice on how to increase the swingweight. They didn't bother to reply to my mails, probably because I live in Indonesia and yet, I'd purchased the clubs from the USA. I'm currently on Cobra's mailing list, but I intend to unsubscribe, since they're not interested in providing Customer service for overseas customers - an example of "double standards", where the customer is too far away to be protected under Consumer Protection Laws. Shame on you Cobra Golf !

Model Reviewed: Cobra S-9 Iron

Without question, the most playable iron set ever. No need for graphite, the Nippon Steel in stiff is an excellent option with very good feel. Prior to the Cobra S-9, I played the Callaway X-Tour and X-18. Both are very nice irons, but both tend to set up closed (similar to the Callaway hybrids which are notorious for this). The S-9 sets up very square. The feel at impact is very solid and off-center hits still go a mile. The dampening in the iron via the plastic damper bar also works. Little to no vibration on off-center hits. The easiest club to hit since the Mizuno T-Zoid Titanium (another oversize wonder from 10 years ago).

Ball flight is high and soft. Spin is moderate.

Do not buy these clubs if you want to work the ball -- because workability is not in the cards. That said, if you want lower your scores, this is the iron set for people who shoot in the 80-90's and want a ton of distance with forgiveness.

I recently saw these sets discounted down to $299 and $340 in stores in Nippon Steel -- I am buying a backup set now. LOVE these clubs.

An OFF THE CHART Value in irons!

Ok, so I upset myself, I bought a set of Cobra 3400i's last year. Regular shaft, good clucbs, but after playing for 7 years with a set of starter clubs I thought I should get something with a little more zest. I hit the 3400's alright, but using a 4 iron to get 150 yards seemed a little much, accuracy was never a problem with them. My Son convinced to look at another set, now I have a year old set of good clubs sitting around doing nothing while my set of S-9's are getting beat to death! Great club! 6 Iron is my 150 club (back surgery can't expect much more) accuracy has improved and a mis hit is rare. I have watched my handicap go from a consistent 27 down to a 17 and I have had them only since July. Forgiving, great feel, I have the Senior Flex and never thought that I would feel the ball at all, yet I know how I hit it and where its going on contact. Not good clubs, not great clubs but absolutetly wonderful clubs!.
