Callaway x-18 Irons
These Irons have a potential to become absolute shovels. I strongly recomend purchasing these with graphite shafts. The Callaway uni-flex shafts work well with the short irons, but the long irons are a complete nightmare. I've even had my swing looked at by a pga tour pro and even he says he can't tell me whats going on. Usually I can hit a 5 iron 170 yrds. (I admit I don't have the fastest swing on the block) I hit a beutifull, pure, and solid shot out of the fairway from 155 to the green. To be honest, I really thought I flew the darn thing. I walk up to the green and I don't see the ball anywhere, start looking behind the green, no ball, even checked the cup (what the hell, right?), still no ball. My playing partner calls me from the bunker in front of the green and says "here it is". I've had nothing but problems gauging the distance on these clubs. Sometimes a 7 iron is a straight up 155 yard strike, sometimes it's barely 130 yards. Forgivness is a definate issue. I won't give up on them, I like Callaway, so I'll try and get them fitted with a lighter graphite shaft and see how I do. If you've had a similar problem with these clubs, its probobly only the shafts. The clubs look great, and I've had great success with the shorter, scoring irons 8-P. When you hit a good shot, they reward you with a solid feel and sound. Take a 30 day playability from www.tgw.com before you dive right in to these, and for all handicaps from 15 on up, go for the light weight graphite shafts. Hopefully my next review will be about how awesome these clubs are. After I foolishly spend another $380.00 to have them all re-shafted. Customer Service No one beats callaway. Ben Hogan is also a part of the Callaway line, try their line of clubs as well. Similar Products Used: Mizuno MP-32, Cobra CXI (great clubs!), Topflight tour mid-sized, Ben Hogan BH-5'S |

Callaway X-18 Irons
It's saddening to have to write the first negative review about these irons. I thought it was time for a change from my Cleveland TA5's and decided to give the X-18's a shot because I got a deal I couldn't pass up. Especially after reading the reviews on this site. Bottom line, these were disappointing. I expected much more forgiveness and a smoother feel but was left in the dark. I hit them decent in the driving cage and ended up buying them simply because they are the best looking clubs ever made. Hoever, they are only moderate in forgiveness level. On mis-hits the ball still goes OK but you get a less than satisfying feel. It is as if Callaway put so much metal on these clubs they intend to swing themselves. I also felt that I lost about 10 yards of distance from my TA5's. I will say this, if you can consistently hit your irons right on the screws and like a heavy iron with a lot of beef to it, buy these. When you can stroke them, they are silky smooth, but that tends to be more difficult than some other irons I've owned. I have reverted back to some old school Titleist 822's cause they are just spectacular. I sold my 2004 Big Bertha's and decided to try the X-18's. These two clubs are very similar in feel, distance, etc. I would highly recommend them to any level of player looking for good distance and forgiveness. Customer Service n/a Similar Products Used: X-12 Pro Series, Ping G2, 04 Big Bertha's |

Callaway x-18 are very easy to get off the ground. Even off shot are straighter. I love the look of it and makes me feel confident that I can hit a good shot. Uniflex shaft was much better for me. I am glad that I choosen these than Pings or Taylor Mades. |

Talk about surprises! From Mizuno MP30's with steel shafts to these with graphite. It took some arm twisting but in the end the cavity backs with "old geezer" shafts won out. I play 5 times a week and I have found that the graphite shafts have helped with the joint problems that I was beginning to develop. I loved the MP30's but found these irons so forgiving that the bottom line just spoke too loudly. These clubs are pin seekers, they are long, and you can draw and fade them easily but a thin shot still travels. In contrast to previous Callaway models, these actually look quite nice. The dark blue cavity back is actually rather appealing and considering that I have always considered that Callaway had always made the worst stock shafts, I remain pleasantly surprised by the quality of the stock shafts in these irons. I'd say that they are 1/2 to 3/4 club longer than the MP'30's. Never thought I'd say this but; "God bless the X-18 cavity back with old geezer shafts!" I shot another 72 today and it was a so so round! Similar Products Used: MP30's, X14 Pro series. |

These are a great set of irons. They perform as good as they look. They are heavy and so you dont feel you have to swing hard to hit the golf ball a long way. Most confortable long irons I have ever used. Customer Service Something very special would have to come along for me to consider changing. Similar Products Used: Mizuno MX 23 Mizuno MX 15 |

Where to start. I had been playing a set of Mizuno MX-20's for the past three years. I really love those clubs. Great feel, great looking in the bag and at address. But I always had a nagging feeling they were a better club then I a golfer. When the X-18's came out I went to the pro shop to try them out. I wanted a club that would be more forgiving. These fit the bill perfectly. A couple of things to point out. The clubs don't have the same feel as the MX20's. Even a hacker like me can feel the difference. Don't get me wrong, these clubs are in no way harsh, but the MX20's are just that soft. Feedback is great. I know when I hit a pure ball and know when I don't before I look up. And unless I hit the ball fat, even mis-hits travel 80-90% of their usual distance. The real bonus in these clubs is their ability to keep the ball on target. I have noticed much less sliding left or right with these. Unless I make a horrid swing, they stay on the line I start them on (for better and for worse). They just really want to hit the ball straight. The X-18's are simply more accurate and accuracy is the name of this game. The long irons were actually easier to adjust to then the shorter irons. Callaway really makes it easy to hit the 4 and 5 iron. The progressive offset works its magic and sends the ball down range. It is nice to trust those clubs and not have that gap in my distances anymore. The 6-9 took me a little longer to get use to. The progressive offset actually had me shooting the ball left for a while (the MX20's had very little offset) but now I am dialed in. The scoring lines also help with alignment. I never hit a 3 iron - Steelhead III 7 wood junkie - so I ordered the set 4-Attack wedge and added a sand wedge extra. I really like having my wedges match my irons. Same look and feel as every other club in the bag. Also, many of today's wedges are designed for the better golfer. I get the same game improvement qualities from the P,A,S wedges as I do my 4-9. I have played these clubs for about 3months now and have broken 90 twice. I broke 90 4 times all last year. Now, I am going to take some credit for all the practice time at the range, but these clubs have certainly helped. Helped with some game improvement technology not present in my MX's and have helped with my confidence. Even after a bad shot, I know my next one has a chance if I can let my club do the work. Customer Service Great at both Callaway and Golfsmith. Callaway customer service answered all of my questions and Golfsmith helped me customize my set (4-S) and get fitted. |
