Model Reviewed: Callaway X-16 PRO SERIES Iron Set

I was extremely worried about buying new clubs because up to this point, I had only used a set of blades from the mid 70's and new set of Snake Eye 600b blades I built 3 months ago. I hit roughly 20 balls with every type of club the store had, and I hit the X-16 Pro the best by far. It was weird getting used to the feel, because they are much different than forged, but a day at range took care of that. The clubs are just as workable as my old blades, but are twice as forgiving, if not more. One issue with these clubs are I find it difficult to really attack the ball. They seem to like a 85-90% swing. I could hit my old 7 iron 205 yards with a full swing, but now it carries 185-190, but much more accurately. If anyone is coming from the forged blade world, these clubs are a great way to obtain more forgiveness with the same workability. I went from shooting 81-84 to 75-80 in two weeks. These clubs are definitely worth a few swing in the store next time you see them!

These clubs are great! Compared to the regular X-16's and big berthas, they are much better. Not much ,if any, forgiveness is lost(which is much more than most other clubs). Also, they are much more playable than the others. With these you can use many different types of shots. With the regular x-16's and big berthas, all it does is put the ball very high in the air. While this may be good for the high handicaper, all it does is let the wind decide where the shot goes. Also, these are much better for players with higher club head speeds(90-100). These clubs are amazing. Plus they are Callaway!

I had a set of TA-3s forged prior to owning the X-16s. Though the callaways don't have the soft feel of the Clevelands, they seem superior in both length and accuracy with the rifle shafts. I really enjoy the forgiveness they offer. Cleveland has great clubs, but the Callaways give more confidence because they are easier to hit, best irons I have owned in 15 years.

What can I say but wow! I had been in the market for new irons for a while and demoed almost everything under the sun. After many months, it came down to the Callaways and the Cleveland TA-7 tour model. After several sessions on the range and several rounds on the course I decided to go with the Callaways. I found them to be a little more forgiving and I liked the way they look also. I went to a fitting session at my golf shop and found out that my swing speed was around 95 mph with a 6 iron. I went with the FCM Rifle shafts because they offer a 6.0 (S+) and they feel great. With these clubs I immediatly know if I mis-hit the ball off of the toe, the heel, or if I hit it thin (which doesn't happen that often anymore!) I have only played with cavity back irons, so that is what I've developed my feel on. If you are looking for an iron that is forgiving, but still allows you to shape shots, check out the X-16 Pro Series, the Cleveland TA-7 tour, and I have also heard good things about the Taylormade RAC LT irons.

I was told that my clubs would take about 10 business days to build and ship from California to Florida. Well suprise, suprise I had my clubs 4 days early. Thank you Callaway.

I tried the x-16 demos and rediscovered the feel of my old game. I grew up on blades and the demands of stiff, heavy clubs but stopped playing until recently. I decided on a set of 822's after trying a few clubs, thinking I needed a light, whippy offset iron that would make golf easy. Well, the x-16 reminded me that a golf club should speak to you as you swing and communicate where you are in relation to where you want to be. I knew, kinesthetically, through each swing what the club was doing and how I needed to adjust. Suddenly I wasn't guessing where the club head was and whether or not I was muscling across the ball. The club provided the information physiologically. Needless to say, i really enjoyed hitting the ball with this 6 iron (rifle-stiff) and plan on ordering a set as soon as I can test the TT DG s300 shaft against the rifle.

When I first got these clubs I thought they were incredible. I flew a 225yd approach on a par 5 w/ my 4 iron. And no there was not a trace of wind. But I've had them for 3 months now and my complaint is the distance control. I'll sometimes hit my 9 iron 145 and sometimes 160.. that goes for all the short irons.. the long irons are consistent and are the easiest to hit out there.. but I just have no confidence in the short scoring irons. I'd rather mix them up w/ blade short irons and I would have the perfect set. But as of right now.. I'm considering trying something far less forgiving to give me consistant distance and trajectory.

tried these in Amsterdam but were too expensive for a 'starter' and had opted for Taylor Made RAC OS. But luckily got an excellent deal with True Temper R300 shafts and am already hitting straighter and feeling much more confident thanks to the fantastic looks on address. A joy to hit when the rain stops in Holland. Added a Callaway V forged wedge to complete the set and a very impressed

I tried demos for several range sessions, and I can't imagine a club having a bigger sweet spot and more built in length. Nice, smooth, relaxed swings produced strait, long, pretty ball flights. The problem was the only way I could hit decent shots was slow and smooth. I like to go after my irons, and the more I tried to smack the X-16's, the wider the dispersion, and the worse the feel. I liked the heavy weight in the head at first, but it quickly brought on fatigue, and was difficult to manage toward the end of a large bucket. It's a brilliant design for creating forgiveness, and probably an ideal choice for beginners and smooth tempos, but they did not accomodate more aggressive, later unloaded swings.

Customer Service

Personal and professional; I pass several golf courses and ranges to go to Windermere.

X-14's are great clubs, also, but had similar feelings toward them as the X-16's. I bought the Taylor Made rac-LT's, which are far less forgiving than the Callaways, but respond well to everything I try to do with them.

Have been a Callaway product user for sometime. Purchased these clubs this summer after donating my X-14 pro series to my son. Have to say that these clubs are the best I have hit. Actually broke 80 this summer in large part due to the confidence these clubs give you. These clubs are not only for the better player but for any player that wants to be better. My only complaint is they are difficult to clean thoroughly behind the face of the club because of the design and weighting, and they seem to scuff easier for some reason. Still the best irons I have used.
