Played my second round with this driver yesterday. I had previously been playing TM 540XD. The first thing you notice when setting up is the more bulbous head and with it a perception that the shaft is shorter than it actually is.
Straight off the bat, you won't be hitting booming drives. There is a period of acclimatisation. Well hit drives produce a penetrating ball flight. With a stiff shaft and a degree more loft, I am noticing a distance gain about 5%. And that shaft(Fujikura technology), I feel is marked improvement over the OEM shaft of the 540.
It is a club that I can improve with over the coming months.
More forgiving, I am now more content.

I always believed that you cannot by a game. However this club may have changed my mind. It will not cure all your woes, but will make them less pronounced. I don't know if it's mental, physical or technilogical but something is working. I am easily carrying drives from 30-50 yds longer. Amazing. I am a left handed golfer who has lost some yards lately and started playing a fade off the tee. I tried to play the fade with the R7 and immediately poked one straight and down the right tree line. Made the adjustment on the next tee, and from there out was in Heaven! The only times I could actually put a "big" slice on the ball was when I swung for the fences and could tell I was mis-aligned at address. Miss hits off toe or heel would just lower the trajectory and loose around 30 yds but would fly relatively straight. I cannot say enough about this club. Do your game a favor and get one!

I'm not a big 'reviewer' but had to pass on the word about this club.
I don't change my clubs very often but when I do, I try everything by buying them on eBay, playing a few rounds, and then selling what I don't like. It doesn't cost much if you buy well and is much more effective than buying something from a few hits on a launch monitor or range IMHO.
Anyway, I've tried the lot and this is the best. Hit it in the middle and it goes a mile, but the real beauty is that off-centre hits are so forgiving. I used to hit a slight fade with my last 'regular' driver (Cobra F-Speed) but I found setting the r7 as 'neutral' gives me a straight powerful flight.
I used to have a 3W and 5W in my bag - now I just have this driver and a Clevelend Halo for long par-3s/fairways...I don't need a 3W any more, this goes so far and so straight. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Nike Sasquatch (brick on a stick and highly overrated IMHO)
Cobra F-Speed (goes a long way but not as forgiving as r7 and felt like I really had to 'hit' it)
Ping G5 - not as long or as forgiving and turned my fade into a slice
Callaway X460 - looks horrible at address...could not get used to it
Taylor Made R5 - OK but unlike other reviewers I found the r7 460 a great deal more forgiving and certainly longer and if you shop around you can find r7s for not too much more cash.

Model Reviewed: R7 460 Aldila NV

My new R7 460 came in today and I wasted little time getting it to the range. The driver is shafted with an Aldila NV 65 in a stiff flex. First off, let me start by saying that I have not liked the NV in ANY of the drivers that I have hit or purchased with the NV in my drivers. However, the price was so good, and I took a chance on it anyway. If I don't like it, I'll just put another NVS in it.

The r7 460 seems between 2 and 3 degress closed in the face, which shocked me quite frankly. It looked very similar to the r5 and the Cobra 460 SZ that I have owned in the past. The driver comes with two weights, a 2 gram and a 14 gram, which also comes with a nifty little TaylorMade wrench that is bright yellow so you'll never misplace it. The headcover is like the r5/r7 series but the yellow seems much brighter and more wide spread which IMO sticks out much more to attract thieves at the courses. For this reason, the John Daly Lion will cover this driver until TaylorMade replaces it with a newer model next month.) I was really hoping for a magnetic headcover with not so much yellow but that's just me at a matter of personal preference. It does however cover the shaft which is good.

On the range the driver set up very well and I really didn't notice much difference between it and the r5. The one thing that I did notice is how very forgiving this driver is! My first few balls were slices that normally would have went 20-30 yards to the right. With the r7, they are correct in saying that it will correct shots 15 yards or more trajectory wise.

After I finally settled in with it, my mis-hits were rewarded with decent distance but when hit on the screws, this baby is LOOOOOOOOOOONG and the ball shoots off the face like a missile! Easily in the 300 yard range as I was outdriving the driving range a few times but not every time. The sound is VERY different than TM drivers that I have hit and owned in the past, as this driver has a high PING sound to it. It's not annoying but very different than what I'm used to from TM drivers.

The NV shaft does bring the ball flight down, but not much. It was only really noticeable on mis-hits, but even those balls that were mis-hit would have found the short stuff IMO. Ball flight with this shaft/driver combo was medium, as the head really works to get the ball airborne. Golfers who struggle with distance or a slice need to look into trying this thing as I will be keeping it with the NV shaft until I decide otherwise. Plus, this will be a very nice combo for golfer who play a lot in windy conditions.

All in all, TM has done it again with this driver. This will be a great driver for mid-high handicappers but will also appeal to good golfers as well, as you can tinker with the weights for a neutral set-up for shot making off the tee.

In closing, this club is a little longer and a little more forging than the r5 but the Cobra 460SZ still reigns supreme in distance, which really surprised me a bit.

Anyone looking for a new driver should give it a try with the shaft that best fits your immediate needs.

Model Reviewed: Taylor Made R7 460

Having read some raving reviews on R5, I was actually shopping for R5N. I have been using Cleveland Comp 460 for a year and half and thought it had the best combination of length and forgiveness. My prior TM driver was the first generation of R7 and was not impressed.

This R7 460 changed all my prior bias against TM drivers. Since my trouble shots were hooks rather than slices, initially I wasn't even looking at R7 460 because their faces seemed a bit closed. Off the plastic, R7 460 was fixed for draw position, so without bothering to hit it first, I changed the screws to neutral position. I was wrong. At the range I spent a couple of hours playing with both positions and learned to my surprise that I, who have been fighting hooks for past few years, was actually better off with the DRAW position, and the neutral position with this driver gave me some slices! Perhaps, I am having more difficulty bringing oversized drivers to square position. In any event, ones who are fighting hooks, usually low handicappers, should not rule out R7 460 because of the closed face without actually trying this driver.

Right now R7 460 is the straightest, longest and most forgiving driver I have out of over 30 drivers I have recently owned. It has an unmatched beautiful sound (sort of "bling")and look, too. Now I have to let go my trusted Cleveland Comp.

I play a fade, it's easy to manage, but can get annoying. Here's the deal, the club face is slightly closed, and with proper weight adjustment, I'm hitting this driver straight as a button. It helps a lot sometimes. I can hit a draw if I need to with some simple swing adjustments. The club is light weight, visually stimulating, easy to control, easy to hit far, easy to shape, and overall just a great driver for my swing. Bill, You need to buy this right away.

It doesn't get any better than this. I am speaking as a high handicapper, but this is one awesome club. It's long, forgiving, and feels and sounds great. I love Taylor Made drivers! The down side to this club is the price. I don't notice much of a difference at all between this club and an r5. They are almost the same size (460 vs 450) and have very similar characteristics to all senses. The r7 be a little newer apparently has some advancements over the r5 but I am am not willing to pay $200 more dollars for a club that is going to get me 1 more yard on the fairway. (They are both great and will get you on the fairway.) Amazing club, just hard to justify with the r5 being such a close alternative.

After many frustrating tee shots with my Cleveland Launcher Ti 460, I decided enough was enough when I hooked two in a row into the woods and broke my shaft right down the middle in frustration. My driver before the Cleveland was the original R7 w/ the Grafalloy blue shaft. I thought it was a good driver but felt that it was time to go with something that had a bit of a larger head and a bit more forgiveness. That's when I went with the Cleveland and never really hit it well. I got terrible trejectory from a 10.5 degree face, was very easy to slice or hook on mis-hits and did not hit the driver well at all! I decided to go to the local golfsmith store yesterday and hit a few clubs into the nets. I hit the Fusion w/ a draw bias and the callaway 460 X as well as the R7 460. I just don't like the way Callaway's clubs look and sound. When I hit the R7 460 it felt, sounded, and performed very solid! So I pulled the trigger. I went straight from Golfsmith to a local Pete Dye designed course where I was terrified to hit my Cleveland before. I used the R7 on 7 of the 9 holes hitting 3 of the 7 fairways, being less than 10 yards off the fairway on 2 of them and I put poor swings on the other two. These don't sound like amazing numbers but the distance is what I was amazed by. This driver shaft combo (stock fujikara) get the ball up in the air and a long way in a hurry. I haven't ever been able to get a driver up in the air like this. Two of the three that were in the fairways were between 300-320 and straight as an arrow.

-In conclusion, this is the straightest, longest, most forgiving driver I have ever hit (and I have tested a ton of them). TaylorMade got it right with this one!
