Nike SasQuatch Sumo 460 Drivers

Nike SasQuatch Sumo 460 Drivers

DESCRIPTION

Having won the Golf Digest Editor's Choice for drivers in 2006, it was no doubt a challenge to improve on the original all titanium SasQuatch driver. What made the original great, makes the new SasQuatch Sumo even better - a new NIKE PowerBow geometry results in a higher MOI of 4950g cm2 vs. 4650g cm2. Therefore, SasQuatch Sumo delivers even more distance and forgiveness.

My first immpression of the club was that it looked great at address. I got the regular fitted shaft. First of all I was hitting the ball 250 yards plus down the fairway. But after a few rounds a snap hook kept on coming out of from now where. It's just not the right club for me.

I recently went into Golf Galaxy with some cash a determination to walk out of there with the best driver for me. I carried in my old Ben Hogan CS3 so I could best compare the new to the old. I hit virtually every new driver they had. The Callaway's, Clevleland, Taylormade, Titleist. My favorit overall was the new Titleist D1, but for $100 less, the Sasquatch Sumo was nearly as good. In fact, the difference between the two for me was negligable, so I saved a $100 and walked out with the Sas Sumo. I went to for the free upgrade in shafts and took the Adila VSP 65 in regular. I had always had a stiff flex, but the monitor and the technician convinced me to go with regular, and I'm glad I did. My ball speed is avg 144mph. I hit this club no further than I hit my Hogan, but the difference is in the straighness. I took the Sas Sumo to the range and got bored and tired hitting it straight down the center. With a sound swing, this club will hit it straight time after time. The sound is horrible, but I'm playing golf, not a violin. The length and straightness make up for the bad sound. It looks beautiful at address, and I get the positive mental image of seeing Tiger hit his every Sunday. I love this club. Don't buy into the distance hype, but do buy into the straightness of these new clubs. You can actually feel a slightly off-center shot torque around and go straight. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the sound and the anemic grip, but the club is simply awesome.

Customer Service

Not needed, but with my CPR utility, Nike refused to fix it but rather said I needed to take it back to the place I bought it. Ping and Callaway just take the club back and fix it no questions asked.

Model Reviewed: Nike SQ Sumo

I recently bought a Nike Sumo driver to replace my Cleveland Hibore. My previous club was a Nike Ignite 460 which performed superbly, but I was looking for more accuracy. I used the Hibore for about 2 months and found that I was more accurate but lost distance and feel with the Hibore. I just wasn't satisfied with it's playability, so I switched again to the Sumo. My Sumo is 9.5 degrees with the Diamana Blueboard shaft in stiff flex. For those of you that don't know, this is not the stock shaft, rather it's the $300 upgrade, and it's worth every penny! I have never played with a better club/shaft combination. This club is not only long, it's extremely accurate. The improvements over the original SQ might look to be just cosmetic, but don't judge it by looks alone. Give it a try and I know you'll also experience one of the best drivers on the market.

I am 23 years old and attend Auburn University. I am currently taking golf here and get to play two times a week for free. Let me say that I have played a little golf in highschool and a little my first few years in college and usually shot around 57-59 per nine holes (TERRIBLE). My driver would go straight one week and anywhere but straight the next. To be frank I hated hitting it. It was not worth it to pull it out of the back. (My driver was an offbrand that came with the set). Since I started taking the class and got a little better I decided I wanted to find a good driver. I went to the PGA store in Kennesaw, Ga. and tested Ping, Calloway, the Sumo 2 (square head), and desided on the Sumo regular head stiff 9.5. I was drilling it in the simulator. I took it to the range and was blasting it but still felt like i was pushing it and slicing it. It was definatly not the club it was my swing. I had some people say that i should get the 10.5 to help my slice out a bit. So i went back and switched it for the 10.5, had a jumbo grip put on it ( I am 6'8" with big hands) bright it back and played my first round with it. OOOHHHHH MYYYY GOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I promise the people behing me could not hit for 3 minutes after i blasted my ball 320 yards 20 yards from the green. I was freking out. Next par five I said "Yall help me watch this" I was going to try to connect good with it. You are not going to believe this but we measured it from the tee box and I hit the ball 347 yards. 200 yards from the green on a 547 yard hole.

I tell you that story to let you know that this is the most incredible club I have ever hit. I spent $300 dollors on it at the PGA store and was worried that I paid too much for the value it was going to give me but after seeing how i hit it i would have paid $400. I am not tring to just blow smoke. This club has an incredible sound, feel and weight. Very light and very solid on contact. ANTD TALK ABOUT FORGIVING. I mentioned that i am anything but a scratch golfer. I have hit this driver all the toe, heel and the top and even those go straight. I mean when i hit a terrible shot it might go a little to the right, but it does not hit that stupid tree 20 yards away on the right. This club really is the best thing in my bag. I love hitting it. My friends freak out when they see my continue to mash the ball straight down the fairway. My confidence has boosted more than ever just because I hit my driver in the fairway (or next to the green). If you are looking for a driver that is going to really improve your game and confidence. The Nike Sumo is a great choice.

Model Reviewed: Nike Sasquatch SUMO

Let me preface this review by stating that before I chose this product I tried EVERY major product at a monster demo day sponsored by Dale's Winning Edge in Oak Ridge, TN on April 13, 2007. Callaway, Titleist, Cobra, Nike, Mizuno, Taylormade, Bridgestone, Sonartec, Adams and so on. Each driver i hit appx 20-25 balls before narrowing it down to the Cobra Speed Pro D and Sumo models. Now, here for the SUMO review.

The stock shaft is probably good for players with slower swing speeds (reg flex or less). If you require a stiff flex you will need to go with something other than their stock shaft. Fortunately, Nike offers the Aldila VS PROTO and the UST Proforce V2 as options for NO INCREASE in price. That is a helluva deal as you probably know that those shafts, individually, are quite pricey. While using the stock shaft in the 9.5 degree model i hit the ball straight but ballooned most every shot. When changing to the Aldila or UST shaft the ball still had a very penetrating flight and still was able to get high enough in the air for optimal carry. So that's great. In my case, I could not tell the difference in terms of "feel" between the two shafts. Ultimately i chose the Aldila shaft ONLY because i have had previous success with their products.

The club face is VERY HOT. There is definately a difference in this clubface compared to every other driver (except Cobra - the cobra is probably equivalent to SUMO in this case) that i tried that afternoon. The ball does come off fast and it is a very good feeling when you make a good swing. As with most top quality products, good smooth agressive swings are rewarded with great ball flight, trajectory and everything else. This is def true with this product. Slight mis-hits (cut or hook) are slightly magnified due to the face. But, you can feel comfortable swinging normal and getting great results.

The standard Nike grip isn't all that great on this club. After purchasing I immediately replaced it with a Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip. That works for me. The headcover is a little different. I'm not crazy abou the VELCRO component of the headcover that acts to secure the cover to the head. Also there is a snap addition that goes around the shaft as well. The headcover is totally secure, but it's just something i'm not used to dealing with.

I'm very happy with this club. Plus, there was an option when purchasing SUMO or it's square version, to get a free dozen ONE balls with it for 299 total. That's pretty sweet. I chose the black.

In summary, it's probably the best buy in terms of price and quality result. Beware though, you ABSOLUTELY have to get the right shaft when you buy this club. Otherwise you will be disappointed. HAPPY DRIVING!! Cheers.

Customer Service

The Nike reps at the Demo day were pretty cool. They were the ONLY ones that had a launch monitor connected to a laptop for you to use. That was a nice bonus, although I did not use it. One of the reps used the buzz words for their products too much and it seemed to me that she really didn't know (or understand) what she was talking about. it just seemed that she was too rehearsed. it sounded like she memorized a memo or something. very insincere. other than that, Nike did everything they were supposed to do to sell their product

Fun! Took my Sumo out for a trial run today and fresh off the first tee no practice balls aforehand I hit the ball 270 yds and a 9 iron to the elevated green! Every hole was fun! I felt like 25 again! Not only does this club go far but it's straight as well. Got loose on one hole and cast the club which gave a nasty fade but other than that it was the most enjoyable round of golf I've played in quite a while. Had hit GBBertha for several years. Will never hit again! This sumo has a stiff stock Diamana shaft and is stock length. If you're looking for a long, straight, driver...this is definitely the club. I read the reviews here for the club which helped me to make my decision to buy the club. I hope my input will help someone make the same decision. Hit em' hard!

i just upgraded from the original saquatch to the sumo and i think it was worth the upgrade. first off..i only paid $150 for the orignial brand new when it came out and i sold it for $100. i got the sumo brand new for $260 so i only came out of pocket $160..that's why it was worth it. i did notice that i was hitting the balls a little straighter than average for me. driving is definately my weakness so every little small improvement pays big. i did get a little too comfortable after about 9 or 10 holes and decided i was going to try and rip one..lost that ball 2 fairways over. you can definately still work the ball(or slice) with this club. i didnt really notice any change in distance. i could bomb the original and the sumo 300+ no problem..it's just im not sure which fairway/pond/lake i will land in. as with the original, i went with the stock sq shaft in stiff flex. when my swing is on..this is the best driver i have ever swung as far as distance and accuracy. i have never hit a golf ball further with any other club..NEVER

This is a follow-up to my earlier review.

I re-shafted with a Grafalloy Proto Comp NT (reg. flex), since the Grafalloy ProLaunch Red was too low.

I can sum up this head / shaft combo in one word - magical.

I know what you're thinking, but for me it is the not only the most amazing driver I've ever hit (and I've hit a bunch), it's the most amazing club - bar none. Perfect mid-launch trajectory, and it seems that I can swing harder than I have EVER dared before, without anything bad happening. Of all the balls I've hit with it so far, maybe two were anything but straight and long. I tried turning my hands over (hard) and all I got was about 10 yards left and slightly lower ball flight. Hold off for a fade, and it goes a bit higher and a bit right.

I think that this club is inherently lower launching than the loft would lead you to believe. I have a 10.5-deg. TM R5 with the same shaft, and it definitely launches quite a bit higher than the Sumo. I bought this club in part because I had a hard time keeping the ball down with the R5. Rather than reshaft, I bought a new driver (surprise!). But I'm so glad I did.

I would say that if you hit a 9-deg. driver with a mid-launch shaft, you should definitely get a 10.5 Sumo head (assuming the same shaft).

See you in the fairway!

I just bought the Nike Sasquatch Sumo, but sadly have not been able to play it due to bad weather. But this club gets an A+ just on looks alone! I did hit it on the launch moniter at golfsmith though, and this club outperformed everything. I tryed the Callaway FT-5, the original sasquatch, and the Callaway X 460 and the Sumo got the most consistent distance every time. I heard that the Sumo has a low trajectory... Does anyone know if this is true?

The customer service at golfsmith is great.
