Model Reviewed: Cleveland HiBore XL Red Tour

I decided recently to upgrade my driver from a Wilson Deep Red 365cc Fatshaft to something newer maybe with a little better performance.

I usually carry around 230-240, swing around 105-115mph, with a ball speed of something like 150-160.

I decided id go to the local golfstore, and go thru a bunch of drivers in the 220-260 Dollar range.

All Clubs were Stiff Flex, with 9.0 degree lofts.

Nike Sasquatch Sumo2
Cobra Speed Pro S X
Cobra Speed LD F 2007
TaylorMade r7 460
Callaway X460
Cleveland HiBore XL Red (8.5 Degree Loft)

Both the Cobras seemed to be less forgiving, and gave little to no distance advantages over my 365cc Wilson Deep Red the clubs also felt very loose, which is surprising considering they were all stiff flex, and the cobra X is designed specifically for swings above my own specs.

The Taylormade R7 , and Callway X both seemed to have the same loose feel as the Cobras did, and allmost the exact same distance.

The Nike Sumo2 however gave me at least 10-15 yards more distance, but the noise it makes is awful, and its not the best when looking to setup.

Hands down the HiBore XL Red, gave me better ball speed, club head speed, and distance.

I had on a previous occasion's taken 10 or so swings with Cobra F Speed 9.0deg, and a HiBore Xl, the very first swing i took with the Xl was 15-20 yards longer easily than the Cobra.

So this time around i wanted to explore a range of the different clubs I gave them all a pretty good run for there money trying to ignore what exactly i was hitting at the time just trying to make the same swing with each club.

The HiBore was unreal, each of my 10 swings followed allmost the exact same line, length, trajectory at least 255-265 yards of carry around 20-25 more yards than my current driver.

Needless to say i was extremely impressed, the headcover that comes with it is also very cool :D

Im very much looking foward to getting out on the course this summer, and really seeing what I can do with this new driver.

Great Club. I have used many drivers in the past i went through lots of different drivers from Taylormade to Ping. Best driver out on the market. This driver does seem to be made for someone who slices the ball slightly, but this driver will correct that. If anyone tells you that this driver sounds crappy they are wrong because if you hit this driver properly it sounds just like any taylormade. Great ball flight and always goes straight unless you make a horrible swing mistake. Great driver would not trade for anything else.

Bought this club on advice from friend.
It was a mistake. This club is really only suitable for high handicappers or golfers who suffer from a slice as the face of the club is toed in. If you draw your tee ball already this club will turn it into a hook. I am using the 9.5 degree with stiff shaft.

I swing the Hibore XL 8.5 degree with the x-stiff, red Fit-On shaft (stock). The club is fantastic. I can almost hit as far as any club to date, with extreme forgiveness. By extreme forgiveness I mean hitting it on the heel or the toe, but not nearly missing it. No club will help with that, but with Cleveland your in the rough instead of the trees or water, which is a very nice prestent for your scorecard.
Even though this club is forgiving you can work it without the fear of losing the ball too far left or right. The easiest shot with this club other than long and straight is a 10-15 yard fade which most people with practice can accomplish.
The added forgiveness is very appealing for all players especially for those of us who can really bomb it. You have the confidents to swing faster and hit it farther without being too far off your line, a big plus on tight tee shots or that long par 5.
Also, you really can't beat the price. I picked mine up at Golf USA this year for only 189.99 brand new still in plastic.
If you decide to by this club you are getting not only a sweet deal, but you getting a driver that you can count on and that will be in your bag for a very long time.

Customer Service

There is no need to the club is solid.

Model Reviewed: HiBore XLS Draw

I was using the basic HiBore model and was not totally comfortable standing over the ball, wondering if that dreaded slice was going to show up this hole or not. I saw an ad of the XLS Draw model and under the caption it read "no more slice." OK, I'll bite. A steep price ($299) but then again I've seen golf junkies spend that on premium balls. Plunked down the 'ole VISA, took the plunge, purchased the 10.5 Gold Shaft R-flex and took it to the range today. I'm not exactly sure what the offset hosel, closed face, and alignment "foils" of the club scientifically do but what I did find out was all you do is aim towards your target & and let 'er rip. I didn't slice or fade one all session, but then again I didn't "draw" one either. It just went dead straight and at a fair clip. Most importantly, it ended up right where I intended it to. As time goes on maybe I'll learn how to as they say, "work" the driver but for the weekend duffer who's looking to save face on the #1 tee box, who cares? I'm gonna enjoy seeing my drives on the short stuff.

Customer Service

Purchased thru Edwin Watts. No worries.

I was recently fitted for this club at my local Roger Dunns Golf Shop. I purchased the 10.5 degree with the yellow stiff flex shaft. The driver was great on the driving range and I was hitting every fairway. It has a very high launch angle and comes down like a lawn dart. The fairways in Hawaii are very wet right now, so I maybe received about 5-10 yards of bounce after initial contact with the fairway. However the ball did carry between 260-280 yards with almost very strike. The problem that I ran into was the durability of the shaft. I broke the first shaft with only hitting 24 balls, no divots or abuse. I took it back and they gave me a new club. I took it to the course the next day and by the end of the day it felt like the shaft was weakening considerably. I returned the second club today and purchased a Nike driver.

Customer Service

Didn't use Clevelands, but Roger Dunns is top notch.

I have only been playing real golf for 3 months now, but have worked at driving ranges and visited them frequently over the past 10 years. I would say that aside from the sound, the Cleveland Hibore xl is the best overall driver you can get. It hits pretty long, extremely straight, and doesn't cost as much as any other big name clubs. You can now buy them used on ebay for $100. New on ebay for around $160. Or you can even get them at places like golf galaxy for $200. For many this will be the best golf investment ever made.
