Callaway FT-i Drivers

Callaway FT-i Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The Callaway Golf® FT-i and FT-i Tour Drivers represent a quantum leap in driver design. To exploit our proprietary Fusion® Technology — the superior weight-shifting science developed by Callaway Golf that uses multiple materials in clubhead construction — the design demanded a new shape. With the revolutionary 460cc Complete Inertial Design, the FT-i Driver pushes the boundaries of shape, of our imagination, of the rules. This design precisely positions weight to the extreme corners of the clubhead, producing the highest Moment of Inertia of any Callaway Golf driver, resulting in unparalleled forgiveness. Our largest, most robust CT/VFT Titanium cup face is designed to the legal limit as defined by the USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in increased ball speed, distance and forgiveness. Also incorporated into the FT-i Driver is the OptiFit™ Weighting System that produces three center of gravity configurations: Draw, Neutral and Fade, enabling golfers to choose a combination to best suit their individual game. The FT-i Tour Driver features a slightly open face angle for a look preferred by more accomplished players. Designed by the industry’s leading minds, the FT-i Driver will break barriers of performance, distance and forgiveness.

460cc Complete Inertial Design
Positions discretionary weight to the extreme corners of the clubhead, raising the MOI for unparalleled resistance to twisting both horizontally and vertically, providing forgiveness on shots hit all over the face.

OptiFit Weighting System
Enables golfers to customize their driver by giving them three different CG locations to choose from in most lofts: Draw for promoting a draw or reducing a slice/fade; Neutral for maximum workability; or Fade for promoting a fade or reducing a hook/draw. Fusion Technology
Proprietary technology creates maximum perimeter weighting and more discretionary weight for precise positioning of the CG and exceptional stability on off-center hits, enabling ball flight customization for optimal individual performance. CT/VFT Titanium Cup Face
Modified version of VFT® Technology in which face thicknesses are designed specifically to maximize performance under the new USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in our largest most robust face for increased ball speed on shots hit all over the face.

Carbon Composite Body
The material used to make the body is significantly lighter than titanium, allowing Callaway Golf engineers to move discretionary weight where it is needed most, resulting in better stability and distance.

Word to the wise... DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVER UNLESS YOU PLAY IN THE MID 90'S OR ABOVE! You will hit the ball straight, but VERY weak off the tee. I am a deep hitter and have noticed a significant decrease in distance. Sure your on the fairway, but would you rather be hitting an 8 iron from the rough or a 5 iron from the fairway to the green? Too much backspin gives you no forward roll. I have even hit drives that spun back 10ft on the fairway!!

Went to the range to trial a FT-5 and was given an FT-i to try. While the FT-5 was alright I could not believe the results I achieved with the FT-i.
The club was so easy to align and hitting through the shot was a breeze. Drives went high(for me this was quite an achievement as I habitually hit the ball so low I need a 12* dviver) and they were straight. It really took an effort to put a slice or duck hook on the shot.
The sucker price in the proshop here in Australia was $650.00 but was able to get one off eBay for $249.00. Cannot wait for it to arrive. I should be able to pay for it in about 6 months with the winnings from my nplaying partners.
If you want a club to keep you long and STRAIGHT sell your soul for one of these.

Was a stubborn "anti-square" guy---hated the look. But after hitting a few balls couldn't get past the solid feel at impact. The price tag pushed me away for a while but two rounds with a demo and I had to have one.

The solid feel and my ability to hit fairways more consistently remains after several rounds. I don't notice "distance lost" as problem as others have mentioned.

Still strange looking---but well worth a try.

Customer Service

Purchased at Golfsmith---no need for service yet--- their 90 day 90% offer makes any purchase pretty comfortable.

Previously owned a Hawkeye VFT driver and I have to say the FT-i driver has made a vast improvement to my golf game. With the help of a lesson during my fitting, I now hit the ball either straight down the middle or a real nice draw on my drives. I did lose some distance, but now I'm in the fairway a lot more often. Hopefully, this will help me shoot in the 80's by winter. I highly recommend this club, if you can afford it. $500.00 ouch!!!

I was fitted at The World of Golf on 47th St and Lexington Ave in Manhattan. Matt was great and I ended getting new irons and hybrids also.

I've never claimed to be a good golfer. I'm lucky if I hit in the 90's. Honestly about 90% of the time my drives always slice and most of the time not playable. I borrowed this club from my father-in-law one day and had at least 4 drives 300 plus yards. Every single drive was straight!! I've never hit more than 3 drives straight in a round before. I hit every single drive straight in this first time to use the FT-i.

I have to admit, this might just be the ugliest club I've ever seen and it is quite expensive. However, through much research on ebay, I bought a new one for $215 plus shipping and tax. I've never used a club that made such a difference in my game!!! I LOVE IT!!

As others have mentioned, I was very hesitant to purchase a square headed driver. In fact, I found myself wanting to dislike it during a recent fitting session. However, I could not get over how consistently I was hitting this club. I tested atleast 8 other drivers during the fitting (all the big name clubs). I was thoroughly impressed with the FT-I. I traded my old driver at the end of the fitting..If you can afford it, give it a try..think of it this way, you'll be saving on lost balls. This thing Rocks !

I am a eqpt junkie and a long term Callaway iron fan. I purchased the x-20 tour irons earlier in the season and love them.

I hit the FT-5 and the FT-i side by side and the i is just more forgiving. Probably not as long but I'll take middled of the fairway over length anytime. I couldn't justify the retail price but snagged one(9.5 Tour-Neutral) on e-bay for alot less. The Callway tour van fit me for a VS Proto shaft but mine has the Pershing 65 shaft. The stock 686 is a great shaft so I maybe shopping for a different shaft. The Pershing is ok but I think I need a stiffer tip.

The ball flight w/this club is incredible and the forgiveness is great. It looks like a hammer at address and the sound doesn't bother me. Compared to the Nike Sumo sq this one sounds great.

Just be ready to want it once you've hit it. Its everything its advertised to be.

I have used the ERCII, FT-3, and now the FTi. I added about 20 yards to my drives with a slower swing speed (regular from a firm). I have increased my fairways hit by from about 8 per round to (on average)12 over my last 10 rounds. This club has helped me drop my scores from the mid to low 80's into consistent low 80's and a lot more high 70's. Hopefully, with this consistency, I should move me into a sub 10 handicap.

Model Reviewed: FT-i 9° Neutral Stiff Fujikura Speeder 586

Just bought a new Taylormade Burner 9.5° stiff but had the opportunity to use the above Callaway club for a few rounds so thought I'd give my opinion.
After hitting my new Burner (and heaps of other new drivers), I thought it was impossible to find a driver any better - I was wrong, but only just!
I got around 10 yards average extra distance out of the FT-i than my Burner (side by side comparison with around 100 balls hit), mainly through a more penetrating trajectory - my clubhead speed is higher with the Burner.
Interestingly, three other guys at our club, all on 4 handicaps, have had a decent hit with this Callaway and all tended to pull/hook it using their normal swing, despite the neutral setting.
Only 3 bad things to point out about the Callaway, none of which affect its playability;

1) The ugliest club I've ever seen from every angle.
2) Sounds shocking - "like kicking an empty drum" as a friend puts it.
3) The price.

I do like the fact that the shaft is made in Japan though, a rare thing in off the shelf drivers nowadays (my Burner is fully made/assembled in China).

I didn't tend to hit it any straighter than my Burner, both clubs feel great out of the middle, but honestly I couldn't justify the FT-i's price over my Burner unless money was no option.
An impressive club nonetheless!

Model Reviewed: Callaway FTi 10deg draw regualar

The model I purchased was fitted with the Fujikura Speeder 586 in a regular flex.

I purchased this driver after quite extensive testing over a period of 3 months (I'm not known for my impulsive purchases). I concluded that when it comes to hitting a driver my sole objective is to hit the fairway. Intentional shot shaping when you are off a 17 handicap is both difficult and ill advised. The aim of my practice at present is to improve my accuracy. I have litte, if any, interest increasing my distance which is sufficient to reach all but the longest par 4s (460+) in regulation. This driver hits the ball straight, no question. My first few holes ended up in the right rough because, as someone who naturally draws the ball, I aimed down the right and let the ball come back. However with this club the draw is so subtle the ball just stays out right. I now have to aim down the middle of the fairway. I have on occasion managed to hook this club badly by being a bit agressive with my right hand. It also launches the ball quite high so I have also modified my stance to reduce the weight on my right hand side. I was probably exagerating the weight bias in the first place.

Distance wise this club is no longer than my TM r5 dual fitted with a Grafalloy Prolite 35.

Quality of construction and finish is first class. The sound at impact is not particulary satisfying but I can live with that. The price is outrageous. I paid £230 ($437) discounted with a trade in.

In conclusion. If straight hitting is your objective this club manages it more often than not. If you put a horrendous swing on the ball then only the Lord will get you out of trouble. This club will help high and mid handicapers find more fairways but could be limiting for the creative low handicap player who wants a bit of versatility. The tour version of this driver may manage this.

Customer Service

Never had to use Callaway but my retailer was up to their usual high standard
