Callaway FT-5 Drivers

Callaway FT-5 Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The new FT-5 and FT-5 Tour Drivers are the latest evolution in clubhead design utilizing our revolutionary Fusion® Technology. A massive 50 grams of discretionary weight has been created using a Carbon Fiber Body — creating the OptiFit™ Weighting System that produces three center of gravity configurations: Draw, Neutral and Fade, enabling golfers to choose a combination to best suit their individual game. The larger, more robust CT/VFT Titanium cup face is designed to the legal limit, as defined by the USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in increased ball speed, distance and forgiveness — even on miss-hits. The FT-5 Tour Driver has a slightly open face for a look preferred by more accomplished players. The end result is exceptional distance, performance, accuracy and confidence.

Fusion Technology
Proprietary Fusion Technology creates an unprecedented 50 grams of discretionary weight which is strategically positioned for a high Moment of Inertia and precise lateral location of the center of gravity. This provides exceptional stability on off-center hits, while enabling ball flight customization for optimal individual performance. The 25-gram weight located at the rear of the driver lowers the CG for optimal trajectory.

OptiFit Weighting System
Enables golfers to customize their driver by giving them three CG locations to choose from in most lofts: Draw for promoting a draw or reducing a slice/fade; Neutral for maximum workability; or Fade for promoting a fade or reducing a hook/draw.

CT/VFT Titanium Cup Face
Modified version of VFT® Technology in which face thicknesses are designed specifically to maximize performance under the new USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in a larger, more robust face for increased ball speed on shots hit all over the face.

460cc head design
A 460cc head volume is incorporated with a longer, wider and hotter face for more confidence at address, a higher MOI and increased ball speed for longer, straighter drives.

Carbon Composite Body
The material used to make the body is significantly lighter than titanium, allowing Callaway Golf engineers to move 50 grams of discretionary weight where it is needed most, resulting in better stability and distance.

So I just started to play golf in May of 2008, so I'm very new to the game. My buddy gave me his Callaway Hawk Eye 9.5 degree driver (circa 1998) and was hitting it pretty bad like 190 into the rough every time. Occasionally, I hit a good one, but the club was pretty hard for a new player like me to be decent with. I decided to use some extra Am-Ex points I had stored away to order the FT-5 for free. Good move. Today I was crushing this thing out of the driving range. The range I use is 255 yards and uphill, so it's anyone's guess how far my drives actually carried. I have no idea. All I know is I was hitting every shot beyond the range fence, and the other golfers who were practicing around me were all watching how I was swinging. The sound is nearly as bad as the other toaster drivers I tried out, but clearly the club is forgiving if a bad player like me can crush it so far. I'm looking forward to taking this on the course where I'm confident I can break 100 for the first time. Wish me luck!

I just got this driver today and i know most of the other guys have already stated it, but I'm just gonna throw it out there WOW. This driver is amazing. I previously hit a TaylorMade R5XL 9.5* and i felt like i needed an upgrade, plus the regular shaft was holding me back. A great drive for me was rolling one up to the fence at my local country club driving range which is about 250. This afternoon i hit it for the first time and i was consistently 1 bouncing if not flying the fence. On the 18th hole i hit my drive 270 up hill!! This club is amazing. It seems like it has the perfect balance of forgiveness, shot shaping ability and distance. I hope this review has helped and i would definitely recommend this club to players of all levels.

Great driver now that they have lowered the price but beware of the restrictions on the IMIX version. If you re-grip you will add anywhere from 10-15 grams to the club as Callaway stocks the I-MIX shafts with a very lightweight grip.

I tested the club at Deboer's (Edmonton) simulator. The simulator showed how forgiving the club was despite hitting it open and or closed by 5 degrees. It was choice against the hyper X, and despite the different look and sound, the club was extremely forgiving.

I realize that a lot of reviews, estpecially drivers, get to be "over the top", however it's hard not to be with this club. I've used Taylor Made drivers for the past 7-8 years,(the latest being a R7 460), and the Callaway FT-5 is without a doubt the most incredible driver I've ever used. Much longer than other clubs I've tried, and very forgining on mis-hits. I had been averaging around 240 yards (as measured with a GPS) and I'm now averaging in the neighborhood of 256 yards, and not missing very many fairways. I would recommend this club to any and all golfers, from single-digit handicapers to high handicapers, (I'm currently play to a 10.0 handicap at my home course.)

Customer Service

Although I haven't had an opportunity yet to use Callaway's customer service yet with this club; it's a Callaway and their customer service is the best in the industry.

What can I not say about this driver? After looking for a club to replace my ERC Fusion, bought the TM Superquad and the Callaway HyperX, before settling on this club. This club is the best driver out there, hands down. While it takes awhile to get used to the sound, overall, it rates a 8 out of 10. The only thing lacking is the subpar shaft and how easy the clubhead gets scratched up.

Went to a Callaway Demo Day last month. I had a Ping G-10 draw that was not right, the setup drove me crazy. I tried all the FT-5's and settled on a FT-5 10 degree regular shaft. I am 67 and have lost a lot of distance lately. This club was great and the feel is terrific. I hit a slight draw about 225 yards and when I got quick it faded about 210. It is forgiving. Better yet my friend got a used FT-5 off e-bay for $240. Their are a lot of draw versions on e-bay but few neutrals. That says something.

I recently tested this driver using the vector system at my local golf store. First reactions, wow. Going from a Taylormade R5 with a stock regular shaft to the FT-5 with a grafaloy epic sitff shaft, felt like a new begining. I added 30 yards to my drive and was hitting little draws into the center of the fairway. Some of these reviews say that mis-hits will not give much distance, but with the new design of the head, the increased MOI gives more forgiveness and i was only losing at most 20% of the distance on my drives. The sound of the head really isn't bad. When you compare it to other club sounds, there's a very small difference. Overall, this club is great and i just ordered it for myself! As far as fitting goes, it would be a good idea to be fitted before buying it. When your spending 500$ on a driver, you might as well pay the extra 50$ for the vector and fitting to make sure its a good investment.
Hope this helps,
Good luck with your golf
