Bob Jones (Jesse Ortiz, Dave Pelz)
The Bobby Jones wedges use milled carpenter steel inserts affixed to the rest of the steel clubhead via an epoxy dampener. So the grooves last longer, and the face is not uncomfortably "hot". It is a "feel" club for scoring, not bashing. The sole is a moderate width, the clubhead is moderately large, and it sits well at address. The grips are over-sized in preference to Dave Pelz wanting to deaden the wrist action on wedges. The club is also on the heavy side to again take the flippiness out of the hands. I believe the extra tough steel insert does prolong the effectiveness of the grooves, but I think the head and swingweight are too large. I also would prefer standard diameter grips. I am not sorry I bought four of them (48, 52, 56, 60-degree), but for right now I have other U-groove wedges in my bag. Note that the Bobby Jones Ortiz/Pelz wedges are all max U-grooves, whereas the Dave Pelz wedges marketed through Pelz Golf have V grooves in the pitching and gap models grading into U and max U grooves in the more lofted models. The Pelz company wedges also have narrower soles. Customer Service Designed to last much longer than traditional steel grooves, I have not read of any customer service issues. Similar Products Used: Any of the pro-line max U-groove wedges: Vokey, Cleveland, Callaway, Pure Spin, Pelz, Wilson, Ping, Solus, Maltby, Eidolon, Carbite. I have not used Mizuno, TaylorMade, or Nike wedges. |

56 Degree
I saw the infomercial for the Bobby Jones Wedges by Jesse Ortiz and was curious whether they would be as good as they claimed. I felt they had to be pretty good for Dave Peltz and Jesse Ortiz to both have their names on them. I bought the 56* just to try them out. The club sets up real nice at address and inspires confidence. It seems a little heavier than my previous wedges (Ping I Wedges). I love the feel. I don't know if it is the extra weight or what but these feel real smooth on both chips and full shots. I had a lot of trouble with my old wedges leaving the face open and shanking the ball way to the right probably 1 out of every 10 shots. I've used the Bobby Jones wedge for 4 rounds now and have not shanked any shots. The ball checks nicely on the greens but not much difference from other wedges I've used in that area. overall I love the wedge and am planning to add the 60* very soon.
