Model Reviewed: Odyssey Black Series #7

A buddy of my recently purchased the Odyssey Black Series #7. Both of us play to a 5. After his purchased he started pouring in putts inside of 10 feet, we practice together so I know it wasn't a mechanical change. At the time I recently purchased a Scotty Red X, needless to say I was not in the market for another putter. In the last two weeks I bought a Black Series #7 on eBay for an unbelievable price. As soon as it arrived, I went right to the putting green. Initially I was not very impressed, although the ball came off the club face solidly, tracked well with little skidding, it just didn’t feel solid in my hands. I changed the grip, went to a thicker grip, and instantly, the #7 became the most solid putter I owned

Model Reviewed: Odyssey Black Series #1 and #2

I was looking for a putter that felt soft but still had a metallic feel when you hit the ball. I also like a heavier putter and matte finishes. Dark gray is a good color on a putter for me.

I tried a bunch of different putters out at the PGA Superstore's for about 4 months; including all of the other Odyssey putters. Finally I settled on the Black Series #1 or #2.

Then I demo'd both of them for several months. Finally, I came to the conclusion that for whatever reason, the #2 had a softer feel than the #1 as the ball came off the face. Not as soft as the "i" series black putters, but softer than the #1. Very cool.

On the golf course, the putter has really panned out as I had hoped. I was a Putt-Putt champ as a kid and nowadays I consider myself a real touch oriented putter. The Black Series #2 feels like a real extension of my hand and arm. I love it. Feels extremely accurate, solid, and touch sensitive.

It is expensive but come one, we spend a ridiculous amount of money on drivers, balls, golf clothes etc. How can you complain about investing in a great club that you use for 40-50% of the shots in a a round of golf?

I know that a few people have given a poor rating the value portion on this club. However, when you think about it, the putter should be the most carefully chosen and best made club in your bag. The average score on the PGA tour is around 71 and the average number of putts is 29. That's 40 percent of shots for the big guys and at least that for us mortals. The Black Series from Odyssey is one of the best made and engineered putters I have used, including the Scotty. I give it great value, when you consider we will spend $200 for a hybrid that may be used 5 times in a round. I have the #3 and find it is heavy enough to hold the line, yet not too heavy that you lose feel. The roll off the face is smooth. Plus, it gives me confidence to look down and see the quality of the head. It's the best putter I have ever used.

The only knock I have against the black series, and I caution you to evaluate, is the glare off the head on the #1 and #2 series. In bright overhead sun you can get a distracting reflection. I hope Odyssey addresses this issue on the next go around.

Customer Service

Callaway, who owns Odyssey, is among the best. Dealt with them many times and it's always been hassle free.

This putter instills confidence! Besides looking beautiful (in my humble opinion) the putter is beautifully balanced and easy to align. The head cover does take a little time to grow accustom to, since it's a magnetic latch in lieu of the usual velcro ( a minor issue if you can call it one at all). The Odyssey grip makes for a beautifully co-ordinated look. It is expensive and I did pay a premium to have it over-nighted to me, but this one is in my bag for a long time. The first time I used it I sank 3 out of 4 putts from ten feet..enough said!

upgraded from a white hot 2 ball putter and at first I was a bit skeptical. Have played 4 rounds with the putter and I have to admit that I have had much more consistent results. I will be one to tell you that the equipment is only as good as the person holding it but you get a consistent roll from all over the face of the putter. If you are looking for a putter that will put the ball in for you, you may want to get a hold of the producers of caddy shack and have them get you a putter much like the one rodney dangerfield used. If you are looking for a top of the line putter and demand consistent results, awesome feel and confidence in your bag than look no further.

Fantastic Putter. This Odyssey Black #3 gives you the most well balanced putter stroke you will ever take and gets the ball rolling faster than any putter i have ever used. Sunk a 40 footer and probably putted better than i ever have the first time i used it.

What do I say ?

Fantastic putter - yes. Expensive putter - yes.

I spent 2 hours on the practice green with the Black Series #1, SC Newport Studio #2 (they didn't have a #1 available at 34"), Taylor Made Rossa Daytona CGB, Bettinardi C02, Ping Redwood Anser and the Yes Callie.

I was convinced I would walk away with the Scotty but it turned out to be my least favourite of the above other than the Yes.

Putters are obviously very personal things, but I found the SC just a little clunky. Also I didn't like the standard grip.

In the end it came down to either the Black Series or the Bettinardi. All the above are very good putters, but these two stood out with great weight and balance, great feel, great looks and for me they produced the most consistently good roll. I actually checked the roll by using some (good quality)range balls with a black line on them.

I went for the Black Series because right from the first putt, I felt that I was taking the head back square to the ball every time, and if I did hit slightly off centre it still delivered a good result.

The Black Series especially seemed to make me keep the head low to the ground which promoted classic shoulder rock, rather than getting the hands involved in the swing.

The finish as you have a right to expect a these prices, is excellent.

Like I said, putters are very personal and it may be that a $50 deal will work for you, but, if you are willing to spend the money on a top quality named brand, don't buy anything until you at least try the Black Series.

The downside here is that I paid GBP 189 for this baby. Rip off Britain strikes again !!

Could probably have got it cheaper on ebay, but once I tried it, I had to have it. Working on the pounds for dollars principle, this putter is still an expensive proposition in the U.S. as well. On balance just about worth it though.

If you are rolling those putts in, you won't be thinking how much you paid for the putter.

The Good: Phenomenal putter. Face stays true even on off-center hits. Very expensive but if you have the loot and you prefer name brand products, go for it. This putter is like money in the bank.

The Bad: Want to get this putter for $50? Go to your boutique golf store and take a very good look at this putter. Then go to your local Sports Authority and find the putter that looks VERY similar to it with the term "Polar Balanced" and the "Carbite" brand on it. Then buy it. I have the Carbite putter as well as the Odyssey and the design, weighting, and feel are virtually IDENTICAL. I'm keeping the Carbite as my back-up putter... it's just a $50 version of the Black. If you aren't an equipment snob and you want the best deal, the Carbite putters are excellent values.

The Ugly: See above. Impress your friends with the $250 putter or sink just as many putts with the $50 version without the status. The choice is yours.

I have had the same ping anser for 20yrs so when looking for a new putter I took the odyssey, a scotty cameron newport, yes callie and a mizuno betterdini onto the practice green. I was surprised how the black series stood out for soft feel and feedback its pleasing look and easy alignment -not cheap but half the game's played on the dance floor! try one if you are an 'anser shape' fan -you wont be disappointed!
