Tommy Armour 845M Silverback
In my days of golf, I've hit quite a few brand name clubs. In order to get the right feel, you owe it to yourself to try anything you can get your hands on. Nowadays, you can try out many different top brands. Once you get the feel, you'll know what you can best work with. The 845Ms are what I feel the most confident with after trying out numerous differnt top brands of clubs. These are of exceptional value and are made of stellar quality. They look beautiful too! I agree to the other reviews; they are the best kept secret in muscle back blades. If you can find them, don't hesitate to give them a try. Customer Service I have heard great things about customer service. The clubs are too good of quality for me to actually have to test out their services. Tommy Armour 845M Forged Irons
I have been playing golf since 1968 and I'm 52 years old. Back in the 60's the only sticks available were forged blade irons, so you learn to hit the face square or you did not enjoy the game much. As the years progressed, larger cavity backs dominated the game, as is the case still today. So that is what I have been playing with for many years now, Top Flite, Cleveland, Ping etc. For most of my adult life my handicap index drifted between 10 and 14. Recently I have been able to get it down in the single digits and keep it there. With that being said, I figured it was time to put some forged blades in the bag to see if it was technology that was keeping my index down or if it was indeed my swing. After extensive research (the internet is a God send)I found that there was serious loyality to specific companies among the forged iron set. The Mizuno and Titleist crowd dominated this field. But I was not willing to fork over $600-900 for a new set. But during this process a smaller player in this field kept catching my attention, Tommy Armour, specifically the 845M's. I just could not find anyone that did not praise these irons. Since they quit making these a couple of years ago, there was still a scattering of these sets available today. I found a set for $239.00 new, at that price I figured it was time to take the plunge ( I would always have my current set as back up if needed ). I bought the 3-PW with DG R300 Seniscore shafts. Each iron came labled with actual loft, lie and head weight. I compared these specs to the Tommy Armour published specs and there was some serious discrepancies in the loft and lie with the middle irons. Before I even hit them, I took them to my local fitter and fit the clubs to my swing, $32.00. The DG R300's luckily turned out to be a perfect fit for me. Then I replaced the cheap grips (Osmos?) with my favorite Tour Velvet ribs, $20.00. So now, I basically have a custom set of muscle backs for an investment of less than $300.00. Off to the range for the 1st test. Starting with some easy 110 yard shots with the PW, I worked through the set with about 10 swings each. Oh my God, what have I done? I have discovered the Holy Grail that the forged set have been telling me about for years ( I mostly believed it was their ego ). Well now, I'm a believer, I just thought I enjoyed the game, these things are unbelievable to me. I never imagined a new set of irons ( I have had 9 different sets of cavities over the years ) could elevate my excitement level of hitting golf balls this much. Now, I can't consistently hit the sweet spot with the 3 and 4 irons yet, but this is no problem since I have a couple of sweet hybrids in the bag. The rest of the set are in the bag to stay. The sensory input I get from hitting these MB's is like nothing you can get from cavities. They are on the small side, and have little off-set with a very thin top line, 3 things I thought would bother me. But, I was totally converted after one driving range session. You can spend 2-3 times as much if you have to have that Mizuno / Titleist mystique, but for my money, these are just awesome. In fact I just bought a second set at the same price, that will be in the closet for when these wear out. Customer Service No information on the Tommy Armour web site on the 845M's, so I called them to get the specs, very fiendly and knowledgable. Tommy Armour 845 m forged muscle back
I'm going to let you in on a secret. Tommy Armour 845 Muscle Backs are the best value in a players club, or just about any club for that matter, ANYWHERE! They are more forgiving than any of the Mizuno forged series (Comp EZ included), Titleist forged, and rate higher in the MPF (Maltby Playability Factor)than many of the well known game improvement clubs (Ping I3, Taylor Made RAC, VFoil, etc.) Make no mistake this is a players club- thin top line, little offset, narrow sole, but is is the softest feeling, most forgiving club I have ever owned (or hit) You can buy thes on Ebay, golf warehouse, etc. for about $225 new. Even at retail ($599)they they are a tremendous value compared to Mizuno, Titleist, Ping, and the like. I liked them so much I bought a 2nd set since they have discontinued this model. I don't ever see changing clubs again and I have owned a lot of clubs in my time. Buy them if you can find them they are the best secret in golf. Tommy Armour 845m
In may 2004, I was given the opportunity to try a #7 iron, model 845m by Tommy Armour.Since I'm a newcomer in the sport of golf, it was quite exciting for me to swing a blade. Alongside the 845m, I tried the Taylormade RAC LT and RAC OS. Even though the 845m has less offset than many other clubs in the market, you will not notice it: no misses to the right or slices. The sweet spot is surprisingly huge compared to other blades. It feel soft, and weel balanced. The shaft is a True Temper Dynamis Gold with taper. It come with a stiff S-300 shaft, high flex point and firm tip: it weights 130 grams. According to Tommy Armour specs sheet, it should provide you with a lower trajectory, more control and accuracy. After what I've experienced, it also gives you more feeling and bad vibration dampening. Compared to the RAC LT, you have more feel, otherwise, the same level of forgiveness is to expect from the 845m. According to the Maltby Playability Factor (MPF), the 845m and the RAC LT have the same level of forgiveness: they're both listed in the game improvement clubs range. Tommy Armour build very good forged club for 300 or 400 dollars less than other well-known brands, a better level of playability and a very similar feel. Beeing a beginner, I know I must improve and will improve. Actually, I start my swing with to much hips turn, early in the downswing and that cause me many pushes to the right or/and slices --thats the pleasure of beeing a beginner! Other than that, I'm strongly looking to buy a set of 845m ( I could get one for 400$can.). When I compare different club, I firt look at how a club is balance and how it swing and feel, and it happens that this low-mid handiccap clubs will suit my taste in matter of golf. Customer Service Never used yet, but heard very posive comments. Played the original 845's for nine years, since switching, have gone through numerous sets of irons. I think the search is over. Great feel, distance control is deadly, easy to work, and not that punishing on mis-hits for a blade. Easily as good as Titleist or Mizuno blades for less money. Got mine brand new on Ebay for $330. After using these for 3 months I'm convinced they are the best clubs available for the serious golfer. The offset on each club is the same and the lftss are a degree or two stronger then others. Exceptional control and feel has been my experience. I was skeptical at first considering they sell for $200- $500 less then the more popular iron sets but don't let the lower price fool you these are quality forged clubs. Because they're forged, I've gotten great feel on these clubs. Unlike other clubs, like the Mizuno blades and the MacGregor VFOIL 1025M, I haven't seen a decrease in distance. To me, these blades even hit better in the long irons than the cavity-backs they offer. Much better feel than the TaylorMade RAC LT, but I do wish I had them with Rifle shafts rather than the standard Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. I'm not a fan of the Lamkin grips they come standard with either, but they won't hurt you. If you are looking for a quality great feeling forged golf club you owe it to yourself to try these. I feel these are one of the best kept secrets in golf clubs. I was at a demo day and hit everything from Nike, Wilson, Taylormade, Cleveland, Ben Hogan and didn't pay much attention to the Armour Tent as they didn't seem to have much but I stepped in to ask the Rep what he had new to try he pointed to a bag and said he hadn't gotten his demo's yet but said I was welcome to hit his personal set which was a combo set 3-6 cavity, 7-PW Muscle back from the first swing I couldn't believe the feel trajectory and distance. I asked him what was different from his versus what I would get off the rack. He said he ordered his 1 degree flat and that was all. I then thought I had just found my groove so I went back to CLeveland and Nike and gave them another try no competition the armours were the sweetest feeling and most consistant.
