Model Reviewed: mizuno ms-801

This was an iron set made for one year, 1987, for the Japan market, though some of the ms801's made it to America too. So it is somewhat of a rare bird. I have no idea why these were not made beyond that one year, as they are incredible blades. It has a squarish toe, a bit more bulky than the ms-9 and ms-11 and also featuring a larger bounce throughout the set than either of those blades. This is not to say it has a large bounce by today's standard, just that it would appear to be a somewhat more easily hit iron than the other two. This iron looks awesome. Just beautiful to behold. Everything about it is excellent. I have found that to work this club effectively, it requires a consistent strike that is of an inside nature. An outside in move will not be as readily rewarded as an straight up inside move. They feel a little heavier than my MP32s and all of my Hogan Apexs. The ball feels wonderful off the face on pured shots, just majestic, as you would expect. Because the heads are a little bigger than its contemporaries in the ms line, they may be more forgiving. I hasten to add that forgiving is surely a relative measure in regards to these irons. Tactual response is reminiscent of my Hogan Apex PC irons. Who knows, similar era irons? The ms-801s don't feel as soft as my mp-32's to me, but I like the top line's look better on the ms-801. It reminds me of my 1970's Billy Casper blades that I learned on...dang, I AM old!
