I have been playing Titleist Tour Models with 5.5 Tour Flighted Rifle shafts. I recently got a set of Muirfied heads on e-Bay. I shafted them with 5.0 Rifle Lites just for fun. I hit these clubs so well, I was in shock. They are the most forgiving blades I have ever played. They are solid and feel great. Now I stepped down in shaft flex, but I really think it is the design of the head that makes these clubs awesome. The soles are a bit wider for more forgivness on slightly fat hits and the sweetspot/center of gravity is very forgiving on slight off center shots. I also noticed the sole camber is a bit flatter than most. I initially thought this was a drawback, but it also keeps the blade from digging on slightly fat hits. Great blades. They are in my bag now and my Titleists are in the closet.

Simply the finest blades I have ever used. I got these for free from a friend who had them in his cupboard, and wasn't using them. I doubt whether he'll be getting them back. These are more compact than most blades but set up so well behind the ball. Its a pity they stopped making them, although in their day they were the finest clubs on the market. Macgregor could do a lot worse than bring them back. Who knows, maybe a 20th aniversery model to commemorate Jacks win at Augusta with these babies in '86? Dont be frightened of the long irons, you just need to swing a little easier and the club does the rest. Also, these are different to the standard Muirfields, which had a more compact head, but are an equally fine club.

Decided to pick up a set of these blades that Jack took the '86 Masters with to see what they could do. I would say that these irons perform on a high level, if you have a high-level swing. They are equal to any blades being made today, without question. If your looking to go purist, any good Macgregor blade will do, but the Muirfield 20th set will make you smile.

I picked up a used set of these and fell in love with them. A very sweet hitting blade with a solid POP at impact. If you like forged clubs I don't think you can do any better than these. They have it all - great balance and feel, very stable at impact. If you can find a set of the "20's" you should jump all over them!

Have been playing the muirfields since 84 (identical to 20th anv. version). Classic muscle back, worth picking up a used set just for the short irons. Small size makes getting the short/mid irons a breeze to get out of rough. Long iron are not forgiving, so I recommend (and carry) perimeter weighted 1 and 3 irons no matter how good you are.

Absoutly 2nd to none. The only club that I can mention in the same sentence is the ben hogan blade. If you are a good player like myself you are able to appreciate the true quality of these irons. Once you feel one solid shot you will not let go of these clubs. I am on my second set; first set stolen and I demoed many clubs in my search but none portrayed the fine chartaristics of the macgregor. You can work the ball like no other. I have been winning local tournaments with these clubs for 10 years, 73 wins to be precise. At least give them a shot; they will not disappoint.

note:not for the faint of swing

Model Reviewed: MacGrgegor 985 Tourney Custom

I have owned all the great MacGrgeor irons, including Tommy Armour 985's and Muirfield 20th Editions. The Tourney custom 985's are the best of the lot because they control trajectory better than the others. Mine have 300S taper tips which helps in the long irons. At set up they frame the ball beautifully, although the small heads on the short irons are not for the faint of heart.

Hit a wound ball like a Titleist Tour Prestige on the button and no club ever made will perform better or feel so good.

These are getting harder to find and to think I almost sold mine last summer. Periodically, they appear on EBay or at Golf Club Exchange. Well worth seeking!

Model Reviewed: MacGregor Murfield 20th

I have played these for the past 13 years, except for a two-year hiatus when I used the Titleist 962 irons. These MacGregor irons are the finest I've encountered. They look new: their finish remains untarnished and intact after all of these years. They provide consistent feedback, allow one to hit the ball with any shape desired; they sit behind the ball beautifully. It is easy to get the ball at the flagstick: something the Titleist did not so well allow. The Murfields are a nice, soft iron that allows for a great deal of spin when needed. They are truly a classic for any player of the game. No wonder Jack won the '86 Masters with them! The persimmon woods stayed in my bag until 4 years ago: truly classic!!
