Callaway X-16 Set Irons

Callaway X-16 Set Irons

DESCRIPTION

The standard X-16 Irons have a shorter blade length and a higher topline than the X-14 irons, with the benefit of Callaway Golf''s new "Notch" weighting. This moves the weight to the perimeter for strong, confidence-enhancing look behind the ball. Each iron has a low center of gravity for strong trajectory and great forgiveness, a cambered sole for better turf interaction, and a soft satin finish with a contrasting, sandblasted hitting area. The graphite shafts give you the flex options that you want - with the options to benefit varied swing speeds and styles. Also available in proprietary, ultralight, uniflex Constant Weight steel shaft manufactured by True Temper.

I avoided Callaway irons for years thinking the large, offset heads and uniflex steel shafts were for beginners. Boy was I wrong. I’m a mid-handicapper who regularly shoots in the mid 80s and for me the X-16s are exceptional. As a club junky I have tried all the name brands and owned half of them over the years. Let’s be honest, everyone makes a fine club these days but the X-16s excel in virtually every category (feel, consistency, forgiveness, looks, fun and playability). I was struggling with my game last summer and out of frustration went to a local driving range to compare clubs. After hitting the major brands over and over I kept returning to the X-16s. Finally, I decided to take the plunge. Best decision I ever made. I started having fun again and isn’t that what golf is all about. No more sweating to keep a good round going, or beating tons of range balls to try and groove a swing with my old forged cavity backs. I can now relax, put a decent swing on the ball and watch it go straight. To the golf purest this sound sacrileges, but I don’t have to be perfect anymore to get that buttery feel or to watch a shot head straight for the flag. Thin or fat, toe or heel, all shots find their way to the green. And isn’t that the name of the game. I can work the ball when the need arises but in most cases high and straight works fine for me. Golf should be fun, especially for those of us who can’t get out and play several times a week. For the mid and high handicapper the X16s are the way to go. For the truely advanced player, the X-16 Pro Series will give you more choices in shot selection and better feel.

I recently had my clubs stolen while on vacation in North Carolina I had Cleveland TA-5's. That is what prompted me to purchase a new set of irons. At first I was going to replace the TA-5's with the new TA-7's but thought I would see what else was around. All of my friends play different brands so I had all of them telling me why I should get the same clubs they have! I really demoed(spelling) EVERYTHING on the market. I kept hearing that Callaway was a game improvement club that would help higher handicappers more that someone like me who once in a while can shoot in the high 70's and consistantly in the low 80's. THAT IS BULL****! The ball jumps off the club, they are long and soft as butter. It did take me afew trips to the range to get used to the profile of the club at address because it is larger than anything else. I thought the TA-5's were big they are tiny compared to the x-16's. A side from that they are awesome! I could not be happier with them. The PING G2 was a close second(REALLY CLOSE). I liked the forgiveness on misses with the X-16's. The cost was steep but my homeowners insurance covered $485 of the cost on the irons, they also gave me money to replace my driver, woods, wedges and putter. I still wound up paying a good amount out of pocket for everything! I wish I would have caught the creep stealing my bag at the bag drop. The whole thing was shady the bag boy claimed he did not see anything and the police said there is nothing they can do about it but it happens often. It happened at the turn when we went in to get some lunch in less than 10 Minutes. KEEP YOUR EYE ON YOUR BAG!

Customer Service

Wonderful when I ordered my clubs callaway said the would be there in 5 to 10 days. After waiting 15 days I called customer service they explianed the delay was because I had custom shafts and grips and due to their vendor there was a delay. I accepted the explaination because they were very nice about it. 2 days later I recieved a package from Callaway with a hand written note again explaining what had happened along with a duffel bag, wind vest and hat! I have never had service like that before, it really took the sting out of having to wait an additional 10 days for my clubs!

I spent the first three months of this year doing alot of research. Reading reviews, testing clubs over and over for weeks. I really wanted to make the right choice. Let's face it, there are alot of good clubs out there. I tested the Taylor Made Rac. Did nothing for me. Mizuno, "number one iron on tour". Who's follin' who. Titleist, not a bad iron. Ping, I really liked these irons. And the Callaway X-16. It came down to the Ping's and the X-16's. As far as distance is concerned, I actually hit the Ping irons a bit further. Distance is not a problem. Consistency is what I was looking for. I found the Ping iron harder to control. The X-16 is a much more consistent club. In the end, I'ld rather give up a few extra yards and sit on the fairway rather than 5 or ten yards further up in the rough or out of bounds. The X-16 will give most players a bit more yardage. This iron if struck properly is long. And don't be fooled you can work this club left to right and visa versa. I really love these irons. My recommendation is to get fitted properly and look at the riffle shaft rather that the stock shaft.

These clubs are amazing I had a set of cgx irons from nicklaus and thought they we pretty good put still had a fade which turned to slice when miss hit. These clubs corrected that fade slice to straight 9 out of 10 times. I dont seem to get the distance I had before because they hit ball higher do, so I drop a club but the accuracy is well worth the drop in distance for me. I have had them only 3 weeks and went from high 80's to low to mid 80's I think 70's are possible next year with alittle work with my short game. It was between these and Taylor Made Rac's the Rac's hit further but accuracy was alot better with X-16's. Truly the best Irons out there for accuracy whick lowers score. A little pricey though on the only downside

I just can't belive some one will say that the X16's hit to high. They just don't they are long strait, and easy to hit and consitent. And I noticed no problem with the uniflex shafts. You can also shape shot easely with them.

These are as forgiving as advertised. Someone described them as stupid easy to hit, and they are. They are high trajectory. . . very high. I hit the ball very high normally, and these clubs just made it unbearable. Short par 3's, I found myself hitting an 8 iron into a 130 yard green. Then I hit it so high, it fell short. When I do hit the green, the tremendous spin on these clubs stops it dead. Don't get me wrong, these are very straight clubs. The problem is mine, and these clubs just made it worse. If you play a low shot, and want something that will lift and stick on a green, these are for you. The uniflex shafts are a bit of a puzzle. They are stiff, to extra stiff. The short irons are like brooms handles, which is okay for accuracy, but may be why they are so high. The long irons are just sweet. Point and shoot. Can't say more than that.

Customer Service

Asked about the shafts being the problem on the trajectory and got told to go see a club fitter. Maybe they are good, I wasn't happy with the email response. Maybe they can get someone to answer email that knows the problems folks have.

Early in the season I decided to try both the X-16 Pro Series and the standard version. I thought I needed the pro series because of my tendancy to close the face and draw the ball to much and the reduced offset appealed to me. I tried the pro series in S300 and flighted rifle shafts and while it is a decent club, I was never comfortable with the setup. After playing the X-16 Pro Series for the early part of the season I decided to try the X-16 and am glad I did. My distances are consistant, the ball flight is predictable with the stock shafts and my scoring has improved so much that I am shooting in the 70's more often than the 80's. The interesting part of these game improvement clubs is that even with the additional offset than the pro series, I don't have a tendancy to close the club face and hook the ball. A gentle right to left movement is typical. I'm very happy with these irons and believe they are an improvement over the standard X-14 and also better for my game than the X-16 Pro Series.

The X-16 Irons are truly an awesome set of Irons because you get the Weight Where You Need It. The idea of Callaway Golf of the "Notch" design is a phenomenal achievement as it genuinely pushes more weight to the heel and toe of the clubhead, which leads to better feel, and performance. I have purchased the X-16 Irons Set with Graphite Shaft (Firm Flex). The service of Callaway Golf's dealer Pan West (Singapore) has always been the best.

Customer Service

The Callaway International Sales Team is very slow in responsding to e-mails. I had written to them asking them regarding the difference between the X-16 Irons and the X-16 Pro Series Irons. However, they replied to my e-mail by collecting information about both the models from their website but no advise. I could have done this myself - why have Customer Services. Finally, I got some kind of an advice when I called them.
