Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons

Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons

DESCRIPTION

Callaway Golf has weight distribution technology. The Tunite cradle allows 77% of the mass to be positioned around the extreme perimeter of the iron for ultra-high MOI and a low, deep CG; the TPU SenSert helps reduce vibration for great feel, plus eliminating the hollow sound and feel of an oversized cavity-back for a crisp, responsive sound; the lightweight 6-4 titanium face insert is 22% lighter than a comparable steel face allowing the weight to be distributed around the perimeter for faster ball speed.

Mine are Uniflex Nippon...

Nice irons! Very forgiving, nice pop off the faces, shafts are fine. A bit too much offset, but that is OK for a super game improvement iron.

I would probably stick with my X-14 Pro Series, or the X-18 Pros, but for what this iron is trying to do for the guy looking for max forgiveness and improvement, great stuff.

The original pricing was too much for what it is, as other max improvement irons were a better deal (like the MacGregor NVG2 or the Taylor RAC Ht's), but now that they are getting reasonable, they are well worth a look.

Callaway always seems to have that extra pop off the face... the Ti faces on these are VERY durable too.

Customer Service

The best, along with Ping.

I just started playing golf again at the end of last season after a long lay off of several years. Since starting again i've tried many sets of irons, usually going for super game improvement sets but they just never felt right and very inconsistent for me. I read about the fusions a few months ago but i couldn't find a set for a reasonable price. The last set i was playing before these were 2006 big berthas with graphite shafts. Again i think these had too much offset and the graphite shafts were hard to control so i decided to go back to steel shafts which is what i learned to play with originally. I was going to buy a set of the fusions on ebay but i lucked out and found a set (after calling around) at a local golf galaxy. They put them on hold for me and i bought them after getting to try them. Btw, their price was on par with ebay, very competively priced.

These irons are great. the heads are smaller, less offset, but i can hit them longer and straighter than any other game improvement irons. They look great and really are easy to hit, even the long irons. I dropped my 3H from my bag because the 3 iron in this set rocks. For me another club that stands out is the pw. I only use it in the fairway as i use my forged wedges around the greens but it is deadly accurate and i can put some real spin on it. I can usually check it to within a foot of where the ball lands. I wish i had bought these irons sooner. These are just the perfect fit for me, i think they can really help me unlock my potential as my scores continue to drop. I paid 300.00 for my set and i think thats a steal.

Model Reviewed: Callaway FT Fusion irons

As sub five handicap for over 30 years I have always been a blades man but recently got persuaded to try the the new generation of cavity irons. I have tested the Taylormade & Titleist offerings but chose the Callaway FT Fusions intially for their blade look without too much offset.
Fitted with my usual Flighted Rifle shafts I was not disappointed. These are excellent clubs, very easy to hit and forgiving. When calibrating my yardages on the range they are 5 - 8 yards longer than my Titleist 695MB dependant on club but more importantly closer grouped in distance and spread. Every shot has a very solid feel.
Their only downside (besides the price!) is they don't seem to spin the ball laterally or generate so much backspin. Difficult to shape shots but stopping power is not a huge issue due to the higher flight.
Overall great clubs but I think Callaway have a difficult job justifying the premium price. If you want the best unfortunately you have to pay for it!!

I have only been golfing for five years. I decided long ago that Callaway's were going to be my clubs. I most recently was shooting with Hawkeye Irons. Those were traded in for the Big Bertha Fusion Irons. Although the clubheads were smaller, I've found them to progress with my game wonderfully.
I will reiterate that a pure shot with them is like "butter!" I'll be using these irons for a few more years...at least. Even my mis-hits show much forgiveness. These irons have become familiar and a step forward in my progression towards lower scores.
I have learned so much while using these irons! My confidance has grown through much practice and solid ball-striking.
I've got a Lincoln LS that runs smooth no matter what. These clubs are in the same class!
Maybe someday I will upgrade...but, for now, I am completely satisfied with my progress with these irons. If I could only learn how to hit my 3H as smooth as these irons.

Customer Service

Callaway Customer Service is second to none. This is the company that I will rely on to improve my game over the years. I have participated in the "Trade-In" program, and they took care of me. I will be a Callaway golfer for the next 40 years!

A set of clubs that feel great in the hands. They sit great and looking down on them you feel confident in hitting good shots. I only put them in my bag 2 weeks ago and feel that my 10 handicap will come down thanks to the new Fusion Irons.

Hi gang,
I've been playing 22 yrs, I am almost 60 yrs old and have been playing the Fusion Irons (Steel shaft) for a coupla years. I normally shoot in the the low-mid 80's, occasionally breaking 80. I switched from my 1995 vintage Big Bertha Irons and decided to purchase a set of Fusions on Ebay. While I was bidding, I educated myself on counterfeits. Well....I won the auction ($750 bucks) and anxiously awaited the arrival. Guess what???? FAKES !! I managed to get my money back and went straight to an authorized dealer. He showed me a used set for same price. I brought my magnet along and they were indeed genuine. So off I went to my local course. From being an established Callaway user it was easy to get used to the Fusions. I added a SW, LW and a 2 Iron because I like low irons. I purchased the additional clubs from Callway Pre-owned, I can't say enough good things about them. Trust me. My previous Callaways had a 1-iron and I could hit it with regularity. No 1 irons available for the Fusions, so a 2 will have to do. I routinely use the 2 Iron in both practice and play. The feel of these clubs is fantastic and forgiving. I usually keep the ball in the center of the fairway and I am playing a draw sometimes fighting a hook. These clubs aren't cheap but since I keep my irons for 10 yrs or so, I went for it. I highly recomment the Fusions for anyone who has a good rythym and a repeatable swing. Unfortunately my clubs are now showing the wear of at least two owners (knicks and scratches) but I don't intend to change soon. I haven't come to grasp with the hybrid mentality, I can still hit my 4 iron 200 yds. As my body gets older and limited in full-swing mechanics, I appreciate the sweet-spot payoff these clubs produce. Play well!

I've owned my Fusion irons since new for two years and just fell in love with them all over again! They always had superior feel, but I was having a little problem hooking with them--especially the short irons. With a iron swing speed around 90-92mph (even at age 47) I decided to reshaft from Nippon Uniflex to Nippon 1050 stiffs--AWESOME combo!! Slightly heavier and definately straighter with that sweet buttery feel--I should have done it sooner...

I played the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in SF yesterday and went low for me despite driving in the trees a few too many times. Had two birdies and several more opportunities due to excellent iron approach shots. One memorable shot was a gorgeous nine iron on number 8 to about eight feet--tweet tweet! Hit a tremendous six iron on number 14 but missed the six foot birdie putt... I'd have shot mid 70's on most other courses--the OC is very tough!

If you have the right fitting and correct shaft these sticks are fantastic. For a average to sightly quicker swing speed the Nippon Uniflex is solid. Unless your index is south of say a 4 or 5, forget forged blades and go for these. Similar head shape, 5-10 yards longer, and waaay more forgiving. Great club for anyone from scratch to a fifteen or so. Smaller heads, so you need a decent swing to fully enjoy IMHO!

Earlier this year I went so far as to purchase Callaway X20 Tour irons to replace the Fusions (before changing-out the shafts). Loved the Tour's Project X 6.0 shafts but the heads on the X20 Tours just didn't have the feel I like--very good sticks for a 10-20 hcp but a little too dull. Got rid of them and traded for some new Ping I5's which I also like alot.

So the Fusions are back in the bag and the I5's, while also excellent, are now my back-ups. I hear that the brand-new FT's are also outstanding--just very expensive.

If you have the money get the new ones after a complete fitting. If not, the used Fusions are a club to love at less than half the price from a reputable source! Great value used!

Customer Service

Callaway service always excellent. They replaced shafts and grips on my X20 tours--no charge! I've also had equally excellent experience with Ping. I've also heard great things about Callaway Pre-Owned.

Hey,
I not the best golfer in the world, as my profile info shows, but i always stay up to date golf glub wise.
When i started golf i thought callayway was the most amazing club on earth, they still are pretty awesome but alot of the price is the brand name. Where as other clubs are just as good but cheaper.

I being a bit hipocritical because i will always pick a bigger brand name over a smaller brand name but my dads words have finnaly sunk in, NOT.
They are awesome culbs but i must warn SHOP AROUND FOR BETTER DEALS BEFORE YOU BUY

I offer my support and opinions with these irons. I am a 14 year old boy with these being my first set of irons. Ill start by saying that they are great! Any miss hit shot and they will only punish by about 2-4 METRES. I say metres as i live in Australia. Thats about 4-6 yards. They feel immaculately soft at impact on any shot and they are workable, but probably not as much as blades though.

Anyway, I started using them in October 2007 starting off a 27 handicap at one of the toughest courses in Australia, 'Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club'. After getting used to them I got down to a 9 handicap in 4-5 months. NO JOKE!

February 1st to be exact when got down to 9. Although now I am struggling to lose shots. It took me 4 months to lose one shot! I finally got down to 8 just last week. (14th June 2008)

In my perspective I believe that these irons are mainly for beginners from high handicaps, 30 to low handicaps, 12.

In conclusion I have only had these irons for a very short period of time and will be looking to invest in some:
Nike Forged Blades (Tiger's Irons)
Mizuno MP 60's
Mizuno MP 57's
perhaps?

I am in desperate need to lower my handicap to peruse my dreams of becoming a Professional Golfer! (Clubs may not be the answer though??)

Well thank you very much and I hope this review helps.

From,

The Callaway Kid

I was hesitant about the large plastic back, but its not bad looking. The clubhead is small almost like a player's iron. The midsize face is not for the high handicapper. The club feels lighter than other callaways. At impact, it feels very soft. One thing i did not understand is that the face is titanium but werent any longer than the stainless steel irons. Isnt the whole point of paying $1000 bucks for these irons is to generate more distance? For buttery irons there are plenty of forged irons to pick from. Overall superb irons but nothing unique in its performance.
