I grew up playing blades and had always felt that "game improvement" meant imprecise. Won a set of Big Berthas in a raffle and was going to trade them in on a set of Cleveland CG4's. Tried both at a demo day and found the performance of the clubs to be very similar so decided to keep the Berthas. In one of the first rounds I used it I hit a 5-iron to within a foot of the pin. A few rounds later I hit an 8 iron that hit the pin. These irons deliver tremendous forgiveness and precision as well. Good from soft, wet lies or hardpan. Get the ball up nicely from the rough. Not real long but I've found that if you jump on them they deliver extra distance. High ball flight but the balls don't balloon. They don't have the feel of a forging or soft casting but they're not harsh either and there is some feedback. I didn't have any problems getting used to the bulky offset appearance. They're actually pretty good looking clubs. I'd recommend them for anyone looking for more forgiveness and consistency in their iron play.

Just wanted to say that I tried the 06 Bertha's at the Callaway fitting center today. I was there to pick up my buddy for lunch when he asked if I wanted to try them out. I said sure and to my surprise they felt better then the 04 bertha's. They seem to have a little more weight which gives them a nice kick as you hit the ball. I use the new x-tour clubs which I absolutely love. My advice is if you’re in the market for Callaway’s or any clubs that will help you with your game give these a try. For a more accomplish golfer try the x-18 and if you like blades use the x-tour. In my opinion the 06 berthas are the best game improver irons out there. Try them out and you won’t regret it.

I bought these clubs after playing a few weeks with each of the other Callaway offerings and having spent a season with G2’s and a season with MX20’s before that. I loved the MX20’s and gave them up more because I was out of golf for a while and they felt too stiff when I came back than anything else. I had G2’s with rifle shafts for a year and liked the resuls but did not particularly care for the clubs in the looks department and did not find them that easy to aim but I found the forgiveness excellent. From there I started to try Callaway irons as I really like the look of them and they are forgiving. For some reason the X18’s did not work for me at all, the Xtours are for a better player than me and the Fusions are good but not great and a little short I thought. I play to a 10 index more or less and have always been a decent iron player. I have played for 20 years and I am now 41 so I have tried them all. I shied away from the big berthas because of their reputation as hackers clubs but having had a bad time with the others I decided to give them a try.
I went to the range twice before playing on Sunday and they seemed really good but we have all hit great shots at the range and then have not been able to take it to the course so that was nice but I was not getting carried away.
At the course however the story was the same. It a ball well and the flight and direction is perfect. But the real eye opener is the slightly loose swing. Here I got away with stuff that normally costs me shots. The ball would still fly 90% of the distance and stay on line.
They feel like good solid clubs with a nice solid feel as you hit into the ball. I particularly loved them from the rough. I play in south florida with tangly Bermuda grass on a 143 slope course and I hated all the other callaways out of the rough. These berthas are a different story. It is almost like hitting from the fairway. The head fells solid as it goes down into the ball and I did not have any sensation of twisting. Distance was excellent too and it really helps your driving because now you are not dreading hitting it into the rough and you start to find more fairways (kind of like the running game helping the passing game….).
I bought the wedges as well and I have to say tha I loved them Same look and feel and I got a lot of shots close with them I normally play Vokey wedges so this was quite a departure but a good one.
Distance control is good with these irons and general distance is on a par with G2s, longer than fusions and similar to MX20s but the long irons are far more useful as it is just as easy to hit the 4 as the 9 and as we all know it is a beautiful thing to look up and watch a 4 iron bore its way toward the green. They do not fly that high and I had no balls balloon playing in a 1 club wind. I found the ball flew a little higher than normal but it always went the full distance which is the most important and straight as an arrow.
All in all I highly recommend these clubs if you want to go out and have more fun playing. It is not as easy to fade or draw the ball but it can be done. The biggest thing is that I had my most enjoyable round in two years because I was always looking forward to my next shot and the berthas were the only thing different in the bag. I also shot a lower score than normal. Confidence played a big part in that.
Buy them, you will love them.

I have played Callaways before - 02 Berthas and X18s - Cleveland - TA6 and CG4s - MacGregor - Vfoil 565s. All really Good equipment. I purchased Ping G5s last Tuesday and returned them on Friday - hook machines for me - although great solid irons.

Picked up the Berthas without swinging them and took them straight to the course. I was shocked and amazed how straight I hit shots - not just the odd one - aim and shoot - the ball went exactly where aimed. Oh - and saved $350 ( Canadian ) vs. Ping.

Distance is average - but pretty good. Ball flight is high.

I play to a 9.7 index - not quite an advanced player - but not bad. I will take straight shots all day long at the expense of ability to shape shots. As an average half decent player who plays 2 to 3 times a week - I enjoy the game far more with these straight hitting BB 06 babies.

Callaway was built on game improvement and making golf enjoyable. The BB 06 irons are a testimant to that.

I was at my local golf shop and i was looking for a new set of irons. I already have cobra 3100's and cobra stopped making them. i figured i would get the most trade-in money as i could. $170 wasnt wat i had in mind, its like a car. Anyways, i decided to hit the fusion wide sole and they said that they were mostly for the player who wants to get the ball high. So as i get stronger that i was gonna hit it real high. I liked them other than the price tag. so looking at the price tags i turned to the big bertha set. i hit the 6 iron and it felt very solid and forgiving. Now i love my cobras but these callaways are much lighter. I have the feeling of wanting somthing new because i have had my cobras for a while.

Golf Headquarters. My father went to school with the manager and asst. manager. They told me what the clubs were like because they have hit about every club there is. They keep the store open even if somebody is still in there looking at balls or something. Greatest golf shop in history.

I am a club junky and never believed that a set of irons could be this forgiving yet offer as much feedback as they do.
(how would you like to know what went wrong yet still end up with a very playable ball on even your worst miss hits?)
I have tried other "game improvement" irons such as the nike sling shots and Adams a2 os hybrids and found those clubs to be awkward and almost promote bad swinging habits but (imo) the callaways play just like a regular set of irons (owned many) only you dont have to stroke the ball perfectly everytime to get very pleasing shots.

I think allot of the poor reviews are based on jealousy. These people think that just because they swing a "players club" and rarely get those perfect shots that your cheating because your less than perfect swing is producing just as good of results with a set of clubs like these.

To sum it up.... these clubs might not get you ready to play on a pro tour but they will help a weekend golfer reach scores they only dreamed about and still help you improve. So do yourself a favor if you struggle with iron consistency and give these puppies a try.

Model Reviewed: Big Bertha 2006 Irons

Worst irons I've ever played with. A total waste of money. No feel whatsoever. A complete disaster around the greens. You can't open the face of any of these irons...everything must be struck like a full shot. Probably only good for the absolute worst golfers on the planet and even at that I would be hard pressed to recommend these. If you buy these, do not buy any of the wedges since you'll need a few "normal" approach and sand wedges such as Clevelands for delicate shots. If you really want Callaway irons, DO NOT buy these! Look at the X-18's or X-18 Pros since the Big Bertha's are a Big Bust.

want to write an honest review here. I consider myself an accomplished golfer. I would shoot in the mid-low 80's on a regular basis. I have tried both Titleist and Callaway clubs for over a decade. I keep going back and forth. Well, last fall I switched to Callaway again because my handicap wasn't going down. I sold all of my Titleist clubs and decided on the new 2006 Big Bertha irons after demo'ing the 6 iron. All I can say is WOW. I was using the Titleist DCI 990b irons, which were decent, but switching to the berthas has been a God send. I am hitting a lot more greens in regulation now and my confidence is sky high. I got a full set of these babies. 4-LW. I was a little aprehensive about getting the matching SW & LW due to the offset, but I'm glad I did. My bunker play and short game around the greens have improved as well. Even the 4 iron is easy to hit. The forgivess of these irons is incredible. Callaway has made the game so much easier these days. I also switched to the HX tour 56 golf ball. Well, I now shoot from 76-80 consistently now. It usually just comes down to putting for me. Thank you Callaway, you have made the game much easier and much funner to play!!

Model Reviewed: Callaway Big Bertha 06 Irons w/ stock graphite shaft

These are the easiest to hit irons I've ever played and I've played most. They are long, straight and forgiving plus they are a very good looking club. The stock graphite shaft is not bad and the club has a solid feel to it. The only turnoff for some people would be the thick topline but, after you've hit green after green you don't notice it anymore. I highly recommend these irons to the mid - high handicapper. They make the game fun and easy.
