Model Reviewed: Bridgestone J33 Combo Irons

I have played six rounds and have had several more trips to the range since purchasing these irons new for $300.00. Due to the combo design of this set, I will break this review down into the following three segments.

3-5 irons: These irons are easy to hit. Previously, I have used hybrids to replace my 3 and 4 irons. Not anymore. I have been pleased with the overall feel and distance of these irons. However, I am most pleased with their lower and more piercing trajectory. Since I play in an area where the winds can really get blowing pretty hard, I had been looking to lower and control my ball flight with my longer irons/hybrids. These irons have allow me to do just that. These ease of hitting these irons well was by far the biggest and most pleasant surprise in the set.

6-7 irons: Nothing spectacular here. These irons are solid performers, but there are no outstanding features that would distinguish them from other 6 and 7 irons in other sets I have hit.

8-PW: This is where this iron set shines. The 8-PW are a MB/blade design. Their feel is excellent, but the trajectory control these irons provide is the best I have experienced. They can be hit low, mid, high, whatever shot is called for, almost at will. Since I am concerned with trajectory control, I am very pleased that these irons provide a greater ability to hit the shot that I want.

It should be noted that the lofts of each iron in this set generally run 2-3 degrees weaker than many of the irons sets available (i.e. 3 iron is 22 deg/PW is 48 deg). Even with the weaker lofts, I have not observed the loss of distance that I originally anticipated.

Model Reviewed: Bridgestone J33 Cavity Back Irons

I am writing about the Bridgestone J33 Cavity Back irons. I have playing for years, currently with an index of 7.2 hdcp. I have played with numerous irons, from blades to "shovels" (Big Bertha). The J33 Cavity Backs are the best overall irons I have played that has incorporated shotmaking with remarkable forgiveness. The clicks elicited after each stroke is a wonderful sound and feedback. Other irons have been quite harsh, especially using Dynamic Gold S300. The DM S300 on the J33 Cavity Backs are not harsh at all. I am approx one club longer with these J33 Cavity Backs. In fact, I purchased another set just 2 months ago so I can leave one set on Maui at my vacation home. I have tried many other irons at period demo days since and have not duplicated the same responses.

I shoot high 70s (7 handicap) and I had these in the precision micro taper. I feel like i didnt get to really see the clubs perform because the shafts were so light and my swing tempo is so fast. Solid strikes were hard to come by but when pured these things flew high and far. I chose to get a new set rather then pay near the same amount to have them re-shafted. I got them for $240 on ebay.

I always read these reviews and laugh.I don't care what irons anyone uses, if you're a chopper, you won't hit it straight or far.

That being said, these are great forged clubs. The topline dosen't look like a piece of bread and the sole isn't as wide as a garden hoe.

For the price, providing you can hit it flush, are a great tool for any golfer.

Amazing clubs. My first set of forged clubs and while I expected my scores to hit low 90s while I got used to them, it took about 5-6 rounds to start shooting high 70s (originally I shoot mid 80s) and now I am in mid to low 70s. These irons are amazing, starting with the value, looks, and ease of play. I am playing the best golf of my life and its all thanks to these clubs. Even the traditionally difficult clubs to hit - 3 and 4 irons are a breeze.

I was loking to upgrade from the Cleveland TA5s. Right as I found these I was knocking off the winter rust from my swing and developed a pretty serious flaw. But for $250 basically new I didn't want to pass it up. Now that have just come out of my slump I am experiencing the potential these have. I hit them very for my standards and about 20 yards longer than my TA5s. These are the smoothest clubs I could find on good hits. New at $799 not a great bargain, but slightly used at $250-300 a steal.

I would caution the original grips felt very thin I regripped wth some Winns and

I'm reviewing the J33 cavity backs NOT the J33 forged combos.

I've played these irons for about 20 rounds. Simply a great set of irons and an incredible value. I purchased my set for $280 on Ebay.

These clubs have been deeply discounted and I'm not sure why. Excellent quality and Dynamic Gold shafts. These are high-end clubs at bargain prices. Cosmetically, I love the way these irons look and the traditional thin top line.

I've gained one club in distance over my previous set (TA 845s that I played for years).

I give these irons 5 stars for everything but workability. Frankly, I’m a bit puzzled as to why I’m unable work the ball with these irons. I can get much more draw or fade spin with my old 845s.

Typical ball flight can be best described as climb, hang, and drop, as if the ball rides up a ramp, barely gets to the top, and drops off the end. This indicates high backspin, which might be why I find it difficult to shape shots. Maybe they just need some more face wear. I haven’t used them at the range yet so a little “breaking in” might be in order.

And I don’t think high handicappers need to shy away from these irons, there is ample forgiveness. My experience has been that these irons want to go straight. I put a big slice swing on a six iron yesterday trying to bend a shot around a tree and it went dead straight.

Overall, an excellent set of irons. If it’s windy or I have a tough match, I’ll probably play my 845s but otherwise I’m keeping these clubs in my bag.

These are great clubs, i have always battled a fade with me old Titleist 804.OS clubs but these have me hitting a draw now!! The high hosel and weak lofts for some reason help add distance to your irons so be sure to go to the range before your first roound with these or you will be flying greens all day. An all around great club

I really liked the look of these irons. I had owned the Hogan FTX then traded those in on set of BH5. The BH5's did not work out (alot of fat shots). I found these irons (J33,used), their a combo set like the FTX's, the toe and heel were raised and the sole had a similar look as the cobra ssi (they really glid through the turf). Plus they have an insert in the lower lofted irons and very high hosel in all the clubs, but a little higher in the higher lofted clubs. In other words alot of thought in each club. I hit the J33's in a simulator and the driving range, my shots were higher, longer and straighter with these irons than the BH5. I also compared them with an MX25 (in the simulator) I thought the MX25 was 7 yards longer until I noticed the MX25 was a 6 and the J33 was a 7. Plus the J33 have weaker lofts. I am very happy I purchased these irons. I think Bridgestone clubs get alot more play overseas. Hopefully they will catch on more here.

These are a superb set of irons. In truth, they are too much of a player's club for my level of play (15 hcp). However, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the fine craftsmanship that went into these irons. On pure shots, they felt wonderful, and these are certainly a workable set of irons. Distance loss on off-center hits stayed online, but lost about 1 - 1.5 clubs of distance. That's what got me since I'm just a fair ball striker...there are too many times I don't hit the dead center of the club. I would imagine that folks under a 10 hcp would LOVE these clubs though. In the meantime, I'll stick to my Mizuno MX-23's.

I'll also add that I took a set of Titliest 704CB (also forged) out for range session. The Titliest were HARSH...even on sweet hits it felt HARSH. The J33's are far superior irons if you ask me.
