Ben Hogan Apex FTX #4 Steel Stiff
I had wanted to move to forged itrons from my TM RAC OS irons. Once I decided that this was the route I wanted to go I tried a number of forged irons - the best of these being Mizuno MP37 and MP30, in fact I actually found the 37's extremely nice to hit, but having said that wasn't totally sure about committing myself to a complete set of blades. That's when I saw that Ben Hogan were bringing these out for 2004. The way the club head changes from the long irons down to the short is excellent - the feel when struck out of the middle is fantastic, and as for the 8 iron to E (pitching wedge), they are one of the most beautiful looking blades I've seen, which is nothing to the way they play. When I first got them I was worried about the height I was getting when really struck well - but then on the course found that yes, I was hitting these towering iron shots, but the I wasn't losing any distance. All that's left is for me to get the lies customed to my swing and then I'll have set of irons that will last me many years. I also bought mine from e-bay and they were about 600NZD less than they are on sale for here in New Zealand, ccertainly worth a look to get a better deal. Ben Hogan Apex FTX
This is my 3rd set-Apex II & Apex Plus- of Hogam irons and by far the best. Since my last set I've tried Mizuno TP9 and MP30, Tommy Armour 845M,MacGregor PMB, Taylor Made Rac and Titleist 690.MB. All excellent clubs but I like the accuracy, feedback and distance of the FTXs the best. I've got the steel Apex4 shaft and maybe that is part of the reason I like these. I still have the PMBs and 690 and they have True Temper S300 shafts. I've tried the Rifle 6.0 in the TP9s and Apex plus but did not care for them. The FTX are a wonderful set of irons. As a golf addict, I am constantly working to refine my game- both through lessons and practice and equipment. Which is the reason I ended up purchasing these irons. I really wanted a iron that I could get feedback from(both good and bad) to help me refine my shotmaking, and as well as being able to shape shot more. I play constantly and so I am always looking at the latest stuff. I have recently been playing a set of Ping copperheads- which I really enjoyed, and were very precise, but they are very forgiving and didn;t allow shaping the ball as much as I liked, prior to that a Callaways x-16 pro series- which to me the faces were to hot and made it harded to dial in distance and direction. So not wanted to give up any of the positive traits of the formentioned irons, I wanted an iron to be able to perform on all levels, with a degree of feedback to help me further refine my game..The Hogan have exceded on all of the above, I only wish I would have made this move the day I started to play the game! I have actually struggled to hit the long irons in both the Ping and the Callaway, but for some reason the I can now rifle off the shots with Hogans(well at least 75-80% of the time). They are sooo solid and precise and very long. With a great look as well. I absolutely love to hit these clubs and feel my game progressing every time I do. Wow I just jones to play just think about it. But before I purchased these, I tried nearly everything like these I could- my second favorites were the Mizuno MP-30(in fact I read many reviews on this site) and the Titlesist Blades, but the sound and feel of the ball coming off the Hogans were like none other. Once fitted, plus 1/2 and 2* up, Ifound a new set on ebay for quite a bit less expensive than any shop could do- well worth a look!
