Hogan Apex 50 Irons
These are terrific clubs that carry on the Hogan tradition of superb quality and top-notch craftsmanship. Up until now I've been playing a set of 1991 Hogan Apex Grind blades, which are arguably the best all-around set of forged irons ever made by any manufacturer. Incredible feel, control and yes, even playability -- despite their rather compact size. My play with the short irons has always been a bit spotty though. The Apex Grind short irons have a slightly 'underslung' hosel (reminiscent of the late '80's Apex PC design) which is the only thing that I don't absolutely love about the Apex Grind's. After demoing a set of Apex 50 blades, I decided to replace the 7-E (PW) in the Apex Grind set with the new versions. The lofts and lies are very similar. Needless to say, I am VERY pleased. Even with the stock Apex 4 shafts, these irons perform magnificently. Very consistent and responsive with tremendous feel and a very high degree of forgiveness (for a blade). I now believe that I am playing the ultimate set of irons. While the recent trend is towards mixing cavity back long irons with blade short irons, I wouldn't give up my Apex Grind 2-6 irons for anything. The feeling of 'flushing' an Apex Grind 2 iron from the fairway is something that all golfers should experience. Customer Service My irons were special ordered individually from the factory in Ft. Worth and were delivered to my home in less than 2 weeks. Similar Products Used: Hogan Apex Grind, Titleist Tour Model, Walter Hagen Haig Ultra, Ping Eye 2 (not for long! Ughh). |

Ben Hogan Apex Blades 50th
I bought these back in May '03 and I love these clubs, I was kind of skeptical about playing blades since my previous set was the TA-5's. I demoed several different iron sets before I finally made my decision. I really love these clubs and recommend them to anyone who is thinking about getting them, they are more forgiving than I thought and when you hit them in the middle of the club it's a feeling that has to be experienced. They are fairly long, exp. my 8 iron goes 155 and my 5 goes 190. I use the standard shaft 4 flex. They have a nice draw to them, and the ball flies high and lands soft. With the shorter irons, pw-8 I can get backspin on the approach shot if hit cleanly, this is by far the best set I've owned. And they look beautiful. Warning though, seriously, if you get these prepare for some questions from people on the range and people who you get paired up with on the course, they are so nice looking that people want to check them out, then they watch you hit the balls, if you don't like people watching you then you better be careful, the first time it happened I thought that was weird, and I was so nervous that I couldn't hit worth a darn, I kept hitting way behind the ball, then I was frustrated because I was thinking, he was thinking "this guy doesn't deserve those clubs, he can't hit blades". But now I have no problem hitting with people watching or critizing. They're just jealous of my clubs. These clubs are also very easy to control trajectory, if you hit a full shot the ball flies high and lands soft, if you want a punch shot under some trees, the ball flies low and under control. All in all I'll have these irons for many years. Customer Service Excellent, I had these clubs custom made and they arrived within 3 days from the time I placed the order.
