Model Reviewed: Adams Idea Pro A12 irons

The beauty of these clubs cannot be understated. I aquired a set from one of the employee's at my local club. He got them at cost, I got them for a song. After playing one round with them I had the shafts spine aligned. It made a significant difference. I tried the Adams CB2 ( 2 different sets ) they hit the ball much too low for me amd with a big hook. Growing up in NW Texas I developed a Mid-Trajectory flight, not low and not high, just Mid, and it seems to me almost all clubs today geared for the better/stronger player lower the ball flight. Not so with the A12 Pro's. I had excellent tracjectory with these clubs. I'm almost inclined to say that Adams uses a different weighted KBS shaft for the CB2's than it does with the A12's all though I don't know this as factual. The A12 KBS shaft seems much more rigid and steady.
The feel of these clubs are not what I would describe as soft or buttery, - see my review of Adams Idea Pro Forged Irons, but they do give a nice solid thud when hit on the sweet spot, no harshness to speak of really.
The topline of the club is quite thin, which should appeal to the better ball striker and probably scare the mid handicapper, and I will say the irons seem a little taller ( at least visually ) than the Idea Pro Forged which give it a slightly rounded look. The soles on the A12's are somewhat narrow but they do not dig, not even a little. They must be rouned off or blunted a little because I take an aggressive swipe at the ball and the club cut thru both grass and hardpan very nicely - no digging or bouncing. I purchased 4-GW and was surprised at the versatility of the Gap Wedge, so much so that I gave away my Vokey 50 degree wedge to the son of a friend. I was able to dial in those pesky 115 to 135 yardages with greater ease.

My distances were right on, and by that I mean I suffered no distance loss. I did not gain distance but I didn't lose any either. Maybe the best shot I hit was a 199 yd 5 iron into a one or one half club wind, about 15mph that ended up pin high and 18 feet left. The spined shafts combined with this head made for a fun outing. I hit 16 greens ( putted badly 30 putts ) and shot 1 over 73 on a course that I don't like. I cannot wait for next Sunday to get here.

The aesthetics of this club are such that before I teed off 2 people asked what iron I was playing. The lettering " Adams Golf " on the head near the sole and " Forged " on the hosel seem to be etched in Silver and the IDEA Pro A12 is framed also in Silver which give a very dramatic, sleek and elegant look.

I don't go thru a lot of clubs, but I do experiment and I will say I'm sticking with this set-up for a while. I know too that Taylor Made just bought Adams and I hope they don't go the Callaway route: see Ben Hogan, and ruin a fine club making company like Adams.

One of the best irons I've ever hit. I only tried the 7 iron on the range with KBS Tour (stiff) shafts and the feeling was like butter. The trajectory was perfect-boring with a penetrating flight. Distance was great. The best thing about these irons is looking down at them at address. They look perfect to the eye of the expert player, like me. I am a great ball striker so I know what I'm talking about. I'm not bragging. I may have to get a set of these but I won't be going the retail route.

I'm looking forward to being a part of the Adams family.

I've never used a black iron before but I'm sure once I get past the cultural differences it won't make a difference.
