Callaway FT-5 Tour Drivers

Callaway FT-5 Tour Drivers

DESCRIPTION

The new FT-5 and FT-5 Tour Drivers are the latest evolution in clubhead design utilizing our revolutionary Fusion® Technology. A massive 50 grams of discretionary weight has been created using a Carbon Fiber Body — creating the OptiFit™ Weighting System that produces three center of gravity configurations: Draw, Neutral and Fade, enabling golfers to choose a combination to best suit their individual game. The larger, more robust CT/VFT Titanium cup face is designed to the legal limit, as defined by the USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in increased ball speed, distance and forgiveness — even on miss-hits. The FT-5 Tour Driver has a slightly open face for a look preferred by more accomplished players. The end result is exceptional distance, performance, accuracy and confidence.

Fusion Technology
Proprietary Fusion Technology creates an unprecedented 50 grams of discretionary weight which is strategically positioned for a high Moment of Inertia and precise lateral location of the center of gravity. This provides exceptional stability on off-center hits, while enabling ball flight customization for optimal individual performance. The 25-gram weight located at the rear of the driver lowers the CG for optimal trajectory.

OptiFit Weighting System
Enables golfers to customize their driver by giving them three CG locations to choose from in most lofts: Draw for promoting a draw or reducing a slice/fade; Neutral for maximum workability; or Fade for promoting a fade or reducing a hook/draw.

CT/VFT Titanium Cup Face
Modified version of VFT® Technology in which face thicknesses are designed specifically to maximize performance under the new USGA Characteristic Time test, resulting in a larger, more robust face for increased ball speed on shots hit all over the face.

460cc head design
A 460cc head volume is incorporated with a longer, wider and hotter face for more confidence at address, a higher MOI and increased ball speed for longer, straighter drives.

Carbon Composite Body
The material used to make the body is significantly lighter than titanium, allowing Callaway Golf engineers to move 50 grams of discretionary weight where it is needed most, resulting in better stability and distance.

One day back in November of 06 I set upon a goal of driving at least 180 yards straight down the fairway. This goal has still not yet been accomplished, but with this driver I am hitting farther into the woods than I have ever hit before. The sound that the club makes when it hits the ball is so powerful, that it makes you just want to hit the ball harder and harder everytime you tee off. Thus producing a slice that will tear the windows out of every unsuspecting house in the nearby area. Several windows later and hundreds of dollars down the drain, I am still hitting in the woods but no one can hit it farther than me. Thanks Calloway

First of all I do not like the sound this driver makes at all, it’s awful. One of the worst I’ve heard and I have to put up with the remarks from fellow golfers. That said I have not found a better driver.

Though I shoot in the 130’s I’m not the straightest of drivers out there which is why two years ago chose to give up a few feet and go back to a steel shafted Titleist 905T – one or two bad drives can cost me. One Sunday back in May I borrowed a friends TM 460 TP and was surprised that the few yards had turned in to 140 yards, this lead me on a search for a new driver. I tried all the top brands with different lofts and shafts. I finally decided to go to Callaway and get fitted. This was not the first time I’ve been fitted for a driver but was the most thorough – tried a number combinations with the FT-5 and FT-i.

I was fitted with an FT-5 Tour, 20.5 degree head and the knight v-106 stiff shaft. I’m still not the longest out but have got my 140 yards and most of the time am still slicing away about 40 yards into the woods. Because of the noise I still try other drivers but keep going back to the FT-5.

If you can put up with the noise I don’t think you will regret getting one, but get fitted first.

Model Reviewed: FT5-Tour 9.5 deg Fujikura 360 stiff

Went into demo the new Ping G10 range with a view to replacing my relatively new TM Burner (ok club, but cannot work the ball and it is very light). Tried the new prolaunch red shaft - didn't like it, then tried the new V2 shafted G10 and got much better ball speed, hit it further and straighter.

I was just about to order the G10 with the new V2 shaft when I spotted a FT5 in the corner of the launch bay with a V2 shaft. Unusual combination so I picked it up and hit a ball.

Wow - dead straight + 10 yards extra. Hit a second ball with the same results. The shop pro come over and said the new FT5 was longer than almost anything out there and if properly fitted was probably pound for pound the best driver currently on the market. (This was a Ping fitting centre!!!)

I then tried a FT5 tour 9.5 deg with the 360 Fit-on Fujikura shaft in stiff on the launch monitor and got fantastic results

Ave ball speed was nearly 15 mph up on the G10, ave distance increased by 18 yards yards over the G10. Dispersion was also very tight.

I then tried the new Titleist D2 with the NV proto shaft, HiBore XL red and gold versions, R7 TP (which I have had previously), and an older G5 with a prolaunch blue shaft.

All were approx. 10 yards down on the FT5 with wider shot dispersions

I am not a Callaway fan, but have swallowed my pride and ordered the combination listed in this review

Key message - get properly fitted. I learned more in 1 hour on a launch monitor than I have on the course in the past number of years + several thousands of Euro spent on drivers I though would suit me without properly trying them

I went to the PGA Tour Superstore and went through the whole agenda of getting matched with the correct shaft and club head design. (They actually suggested I go with the Titleist 907-D1) But, I was convinced I needed the Callaway FT-5. Man, was I wrong! This club sounds ridiculous when you hit it...and, absolutely no chance of working your ball. You better like a low fade, because that's all you have with this club. I took it back straight from the golf course and got the Titleist...should have listened to the experts.

Before i hit this driver i had been really struggling with my driver a Titlest D1. I tryed about 10 shafts with it and got some better results but the best i got was a power hook that i could play but i think it hurt me in distance. Now when it cam to callaway i never gave them a chance becuase i didnt like the way the hossle went into the head and at address it look a little weird but i alwys like the shape of there heads. Well anyways at the corse i saw they had a tour FT-5 in the demo bag with stiff E360 shaft, 9.5 dagree. Nutreul, so took it to the range. After hitting some irons then went to the driver and WOW what a differnts the ball want strieght almost every ball(around 20ish) most with a nice little fade at the end and roll holy crap great roll of the club. The heavy head and balnce of that between the shafts is what i think made me have very good tempo and made me feel the club at the top of the swing. Now i have a very fast tempo with around 117mph swing and even with the light shaft on in it (60g) i couldtn believe how it could be that good.
Well i didnt buy it $450 dollers is a little steep so i want to good old Ebay and bought one with a very nice Speeder 757 the heavy shaft so make me deadly with this cant wait for it.

Model Reviewed: FT-5 Tour 9.5* Neutral NV65 Stiff

This club fits my swing for some reason; I couldn't stop hitting the driver when I was testing it it. I find that FT5 is slightly flatter in club head height, compare to Nike Sumo.(measured approx. 1/4 inch difference)

Feel: I can feel how a ball is compressed at the impact. Balls come hot off the face.

Sound: I love it. You can tell the "Callaway Sound" from half a mile away. Louisville Slugger-ish sound.

Price: steep. thank god I had some clubs to trade in. But, I got what I paid for.

Performance: accurate and far.
increase in carry distance. I appreciate the 0.5 degree open face

Very disappointed. Awful sound. Clang. My Cleveland 460 goes just as far or farther. And so much money, for what? This was my first experience with Callaway. Not buying Callaway again.

I normally don't write reviews, but this driver has warrented one. I cannot say enough about this club. I had quite an old driver, a Callaway Steel Head Plus...like I said, an "old" club. So needless to say, there was a great jump in technology between the two clubs. I never thought I would like a 460cc driver...how wrong I was.

I am a person who researches like crazy when it comes to spending any money. I read reviews for weeks and weeks.I tested alot of clubs...almost all of them, and I was trying to find the best club for the absolute cheapest price. Of course, as fate would have it, I bought one of the most expensive on the market. But from a man whom most would consider cheap, this club was worth every penny.

What really sold me was the pure feeling of the club. No matter how well I hit the other clubs (TM Burner, Nike SQ2, Clevland HiBore, Ping G5, Cobra Speed) nothing compared. The tour shaft is great as well, but probably works better for higher swing speeds.

What really impressed me was how far the ball traveled on mis hits. And not only how far but how striaght. Off the toe or heel, the ball just goes down the fairway. The true irony is that this club is extremely workable. Mis hits go straight...and you can shape shots at will...a total mystery to me.

People will comment on the sound, but they get over it when they see how far back they are behind you.

My favorite thing about this club is that I raved about it to my Grandfather, who is 78, and he bought one without even taking a single swing with it. He is as smitten with his as I am with mine. So whether you are young or old, a fast swinger or slow, chances are you will love this club....like I said, it has been worth every penny.

Customer Service

Fantastic. I chipped the paint off the bottom on a cut drive off. The store told me there was no way Callaway would replace it. They did. AND they let me keep my other one till the new one arrived. Top Notch Callaway. Thank you.

Model Reviewed: FT-5 TOur, 9.5 Fuji Stiff

After having ordered this 4 months ago ( I'm a lefty), finally delivered. Ordered it with the Fuji 150, stiff ( the one that's on the normal version, softer tip).

For a long time, I stayed away from Callaway products, which didn't appeal to me due to brand image, etc... Was playing a titleist 905R, had an R7 TP...

I bought into the buzz this product was getting, after having tried an FT3, which I liked, but was still a ilttle gimmicky marketing in my mind.

It is a great driver. I tried one on a launch monitor for 1/2 hour, companing it to my driver, a new Burner and Nike SQ2. I was consistently 10-15 yards longer than with the others, so ordered it.

I'm not a big hitter, consistently in the 250-270 yard area, rarely longer, but hit most of the fairways.

This club despite looking slightly different, sits up well, nothing shocking, and ultimately in a pleasant manner after a round - nothing disturbing esthetically, it actually looks pretty good.

The impact makes a different noise, which is a little surprising at first, but you get used to it quick, and so do the other platers in your party, unlike the Nike which is consistently deafening.

WHen struck well, the sound is sold, the feel is solid and it goes an extra 10-20 yards longer than most premium drivers out there. The feel is better than other Callaway products I've tried, though not as good as most titleist products I've enjoyed over the years, nor the TP series from Taylor made - it isn't a blind man's stick though, there is some feedback on most well struck shots, just not as much on the off center hits.

Off center hits go a long way, and stay in line fairly well - dispersion is limited, but am able to work the ball either way, fade is easily kept under control, can't say much about a draw which I was able to achieve but which isn't my best shot with a driver under normal circumstances ( i hit it straight or work a fade).

Balls fly with a mid -trajectory, never too high, and it is reasonably easy to keep them low if desired.

In my mind, one of the better clubs out there - I found it much nicer than the Nike and the new Titleist D2 which I both found disappointing) - up with the Superquad which I think is a great clb, but I'm tired of Taylor Made's marketing gimmicks ( there's 16 different R7's out there now).......

Model Reviewed: Callaway FT-5 Tour 9.5 degree

I picked up a new FT-5 9.5 degree "neutral" with a Mitsubishi Bassara stiff shaft. I got this club to replace my FT-3 Tour. If you like the FT-3 you will really like the FT-5. I think the head looks a bit better at address and the club seems to have a bit hotter face. My driver club speed is in the 105mph range and I was able to pick up about 5-10yrds over my FT-3. The club is forgiving and in typical Callaway fashion, is easy to hit. I have to stick with their tour models because the regular models have such a closed face, even in the "neutral" models.
