Model Reviewed: Ashton X-1 driver

The Ashton X-1 driver is one of the best component drivers I've ever owned. Though it's a quiet clubhead relative to its 460cc size, the distance is absolutely killer...the X-1 has great pop.

Though Ashton is no longer in business, the X-1 is still available from a number of component distributors.

Model Reviewed: Ashton X-1 on a accuflex ultra boom

I am into long drive comp and was looking to find a driver that will fit my swing. I got a X-1 even though I read some bad reveiws about people with swing speeds over 120 mph. My swing speed is in the mid 130's - 147 was the fastest I have done. My dad has been my club maker and put this head on a accuflex jlg ultra boom shaft, this club is what i was looking for untill i cracked the head. from the face area on the heel to the sole of the club a crack was formed. i was swinging about the mid 130's
I will put another X-1 on just to see if it happens again. I like what results I was getting with this club. Low ball flight with at least 50 yards role. my average carry is between 320-347. So if I can kepp it from cracking this will be a good club.

This is the finest driver I've ever hit. I'm at least 30 yards longer, part of that is the shaft the new Grafalloy Prototype Comp NT 85 45 1/2 long X flex. The first tee ball I hit on the range cleared the fence as did the next 4, and I'm an old preacher, well 55 I admit to. This driver feels like a fine piece of china and hits like that exploding driver Rodney Dangerfield used in Caddyshack. The only problem I've had is it hits the ball too far on several holes I used to hit drivers on and now can't. Admittedly this review is after only 5 rounds, but I've shaved 2 strokes off my handicap in those 5 rounds, the only difference is the driver. I can't imagine anyone this driver wouldn't help.

Customer Service

Club was produced by 2puttsgolf.com of Plymouth WI, a Master Club builder. Service was excellent.

Long long ago I was a Long Drive Contestant, so length off the tee is vital to me. I've used most of the current hot driver heads, Bang, Alpha, and SMT.

The product was bought in Canada. I tried this driver with an Accra shaft. I LOVE the feel of Accra but hated the sound that came from the head. I just can't seem to hit this driver straight at all. It's all over the place except in the fairway. I have tried many different driver components and this has to be one of the worst ones. I will not recommend this one.

Customer Service

I did call them but of course it's never the product's fault. I believe that the head had a fault in it but again they just wouldn't listen nor asked to send it back for verification. Very poor service if you ask me.

I bought an Ashton X1 driver head with a NVS shaft. I tried this driver for a while just to make sure that I gave it a good chance. I just can't hit this driver at all. All I get from this driver are very bad slices. For this rason, I certainly dont recommend it.

The driver I put to-gether is an Ashton X-1 head with an SK Fiber Rev. 1 stiff flex I have a fairly fast tempo with swingspeed 100-105 for my driver. The only way to describe this combo is unnatural! The ball just keeps going even though my swing still needs improvement. Any one who has tried my driver quite frankly wants one. Trust me, if you have problems hitting the X1, it is not the head, it is an improperly fit shaft. Highly recommend it.

Model Reviewed: Ashton X-1 Driver

After reading a bad review on the X-1 Driver on this site, it tweaked my curiosity to give it a try. I emailed Ashton directly to ask some questions about what loft they could recommend for me and what shaft they could suggest. They gave me their suggestions and referred me to some of their Canadian distributors. Low and behold one of them was the Custom Club Shop in Ontario. I visited their shop and took out an X-1 demo. I compared it to my Cleveland 460 and quite honestly their was no comparison. I immediately went back to their shop and had them build me one with an SK Fiber Lite Rev II stiff shaft 45" length. I've now had the club for 3 weeks and this is the best stick I've ever owned. It's on average 10 yards longer than my Cleveland and I'm hitting way more fairways. This club pretty much does all the work for you. I point it where I want to go, swing and that's it. I highly recommend this club.

Customer Service

The level of customer service from Ashton and the Custom Club Shop was second to none. They responded to emails very quickly and anwered all my questions. The sales staff at custom club were not pushy and were more than happy to let me take clubs out for a day or two. All in all, a great experience.
