I have played this course for over 20 years. It has undergone improvements in the past ten years that have greatly improved the course. Unfortunately, that cannot offset the biggest issue with playing Tilden Park, and that is chronic slow play. It could be all the hills and uneven lies that abound on this Berkeley course way up in the hills. It is a beautiful course to regard. There are some sights that are just gorgeous to see from the tee box. You should enjoy them because you will be seeing them more than maybe you care to. Sometimes, even if the starters put more space between foursomes, there would still be log jams. Because the course is relatively tight, almost all fairways are tree lined, many drives get lost a lot by hackers. So, they spend ten minutes looking for their ball only to hit out from under the trees and now you have yet another 'search for the ball' again scenario. This is replicated over and over. It's not the course's fault really. It is a tight driving course. The greens are generally smallish with a handful of exceptions. Additionally, the greens are always very slow and lumpy. You really have to whack a ball on some greens, and if you've been playing at a private club, this muni course will leave your puts well short of the hole. It can take me 4-5 greens before I get a feel for these slow green speeds. There are a lot of sucker shots that the course leads you into: Massive downhill drives were you feel you can just thoroughly attack the hole, however, the fairway will be tapered at that point, and you are hosed! It really is not a very long course, the first hole is really the only one where a driver would be needed. So, put away the driver, hit your 3 wood straight and you can eat this course up, assuming you can handle a 5-6 hour round with patience. This is the course I take really cocky golfers from country clubs to, and I watch them get destroyed by every shot being from an uneven lie, postage stamp greens with bunkers and constant finesse shots required to tackle this seemingly innocuous muni golf course. It is the type of course where your demons will show themselves for all to see! Surely, a good walk spoiled...again, the views are just stunning and the course should be played by all who love golf, and think they know it all:)

Played at Tilden with my golf club on a weekend, pace was slow, which did not help with my game, no cart service while on the course. The course played difficult for me that day, part of my problem was that three of the 3 pars were around 200 yards from the white tees, which I thought was not fair. Also the fairways were tight on a lot of holes, and some greens were so elevated from the fairway that if you did not hit the green, you would role back 20 or 30 yards. On the positive side, the hills that the course is on are beautifull and you will see deer and other wildlife on the course.

Although this course is nice and interesting with a couple of challenging holes, I feel the price of $62 with cart was not that cheap. More importantly, the service here was BAD. Period. I've been here twice and both times I was jerked around by the staff here. The first time, we weren't told the course was under repair and yet we paid full price. We complained and requested a raincheck and got nowhere. This second time around, the check in / reception guy tells us we should have arrived 20 minutes ago and yet we've been patiently waiting for 30 minutes while he was on the phone! Some nerve. As if we were being told "we'll take you $62 anyway thank you very much and please get out now"... After this we were just hoping to have a good time but on every hole we were rushed by marshall's to "pick up the pace" because of some tournament that was about to start at 10am. So don't come here if you want to relax and enjoy your game. Can't be done. Nice course and all, but I'll go elsewhere from now on.

In my opinion Tilden Park is a good golf course compared to other Public Golf Courses. The green and tee conditions are good though the tee boxes are usually full of divots. The course in the middle of a tee box leveling and renovation project so the tee boxes should be getting better. The course is well maintained and the flag sticks and cups are replaced every so often to keep them looking brand new. The prices are reasonable but for Juniors (under 17) the deal is great! $5 in the afternoon on weekdays and $1 for Jr. Members. The course is slow at peak times and certain holes tend to back up such as the 3rd, 4th, and 7th. Tilden Park is a Nike Golf Learning Center course so the learning staff know their stuff and they have the good equipment, such as video swing analasis. Overall Tilden Park is a great course to play and it is worth every penny of the green fee.

Customer Service

The course staff is really friendly. A lot of the staff members are students at UC Berkeley. They are friendly. The staff up there know their stuff and they know most regulars, such as myself, by name.

Tilden Park Golf Course is located in a secluded, beautiful mountain setting near UC-Berkeley just east of downtown Oakland, CA. The greens, during my visit, had just been aerated. Therefore, an accurate assesment of their normal condition was not possible. The course is relatively short from the white (middle) tees, with several short par 4s that challenge the golfer with tight landing areas and uneven stances. Therefore, the course requires use of every club in the bag. I found the tee boxes to be only in fair condition and requiring slightly uneven stances, and the fairways were not particularly closely cut. Marshalls do their best to keep play moving, and our round lasted 4:45 despite being behind a very slow, inexperienced group of golfers, none of whom used carts. The course is very hilly. Carts are encouraged - the course management only charges $10 per person weekday for use of a cart, regardless of whether or not it is shared by another golfer. Plus the carts all come with GPS Systems, which totally take the guess work out of yardage distance to the hole, as well as providing advice about each hole regarding tee shot placement. I found the course management to be courteous and helpful. I rented clubs, since I was visiting the area without my personal set, and I found the set provided to be above average quality. They have a wonderful arrangement for ordering food on the 9th hole tee, which is prepared and waiting for you as you "drive by" to the 10th tee. Food prices are reasonable. In all, Tilden Park is a good value experience which I would look forward to repeating again in the future!

Customer Service

Very courteous staff; I walked on as a single on Tuesday and got on within half an hour.

This is the home course and I love it. It is a beautiful
setting for course -- the rolling Berkeley hills. This
is an extremely hilly course. If you walk, prepare to
be tired at the end of a round. But the hills make
for some spectacular holes. The course is fairly well
maintained, though it gets a lot of rain and it's hard
to keep up with all the damage done to it.
