Absolutely the worst golf experience - ever. I don't mind playing dormant fairways and rough in the winter as long as the greens are good. The greens rolled true, but that's it. Tee boxes and rough has 6" weeds growing. Range was closed and food service didn't open until 11:30am - my guess the same guy in the pro shop was also picking up balls on the range and making food in the kitchen. Needs more staff and tons of maintenance. With so many other options in the Willamsburg area, the Colonial won't be arounnd long. Too bad - used to like playing here. |

Okay, I have played them all in Virginia, and I love them all, well, except The Crossings, and that is a whole nother story. This is the best course in the state. The greens are sometimes lacking, but for layout, design and variety of holes, and beauty, this is the one. You can even walk the beast without too much of a hump between tees and greens. Great variety of par fours, with some serios carries from the tips. Par 3's seem sort of ordinary until you get to the greens, which on the par threes are quite severe. Par 5's are all strategic as heck, and 2 are reachable if you got the goats. Really lays itself out well visually. You can see the shots and how to shape them, and if you can control your ball flight you can play well here. Bunkers around greens dictate shot, some open up for a high cut, and some of the longer ones allow you to run a low draw up the front. Really alot of fun if you are playing well, and not too brutal if your game is a little off. Don't you go to the back tees on your first time here, there are some hidden wetland areas you need to see the first time or you'll get the punishment.
