I grew up playing it and I can say this course does not deserve a 5 star rating. It is a solid muni course that is maintained OK. Its inexpensive, which makes it attractive, but sometimes a bit crowded. The unique property is the terrain, lots of hills taht aoffer some side hill lies. A solid challenge. Grade = solid B. Customer Service usually pretty good Similar Products Used: There is nothing like the hills at Gypsy Hill. |

I've been playing "the Hill" since I was 15 (I'm 28 now). It's one of the nicest examples of an old, pulbic course located entirely and completely within the confines of a small town. It's literally in the heart of Stauton, VA, which really gives it a intimacy and sense of belonging that is missing in many of the "strip development" courses you find in other locales. The course is designed for a billy goat. It is hilly, hilly, and more hilly. Fairways are relatively tight, greens are pretty small, and there a some blind shots (#7 most notably, a *very* reachable par 5). Don't expect lush fairways or carefully manicured greens or bunkers -- this is a munie course, and it's obvious they don't have an adequate budget to do everything they might. A great (and energetic!) round of golf, esp. if you get out early for a walking round and don't mind hiking up and down the hills. |

An "ancient" course that is, at once, "cool" and "quirky". Untouched by modern bulldozers, a rococo course set in a rococo jewel of a public park. Don't let the low slope rating put you off; this was designed when the shafts were hickory and today presents a wonderful test of course management. I just flat out enjoyed it; my "five rating" reflects that it is what it is. Customer Service As gracious as befitting the beautiful Victorian town in which it rests. |
