Shoots in the 90s

Course is pretty nice, but really slooooow due to heavy traffic and poor tee-time management by the staff. Also the price is way too high for what you are getting.

Customer Service

Not so hot. These guys are pretty arrogant.

Shoots in the 80s

I used to play this course in the late 1980's through 2003. When the village of Reston ran it, it was inexpensive, very well maintained and had the heaviest traffic of all courses in the DC metro area. The marshals used to crack the whip and ride the players hard. After the Billy Casper Mgnt. Group took over, the price went sky-high and the flower gardens started to look nicer while the course quality went down. After two years, I lost interest in going there mostly because of the price. Several memorable holes. Since I haven't played there in years, I would love to go back.

Shoots in the 80s
Model Reviewed: Reston National Golf Club

Billy Casper golf has done a phenomenal job of course upkeep. There are actually time restricted tee times on weekend mornings, and the marshalls are numerous and effective. The course is long from the tips with not much trouble in the way, but tight fairways and undulating, protected greens place a real emphasis on shot placement. Follow their rules, or it ain't gonna be fun.

Model Reviewed: Reston National

Management changed this spring, now managed by Billy Casper Golf (www.billycaspergolf.com), which is located in Vienna, VA (not far away) and this is the closest course to HQ. The web site (previously nonexistant) is www.restonnationalgc.com. They promise a course overview, but it hasn't been put up yet. Billy Casper completely rebuild EVERY bunker on the course shortly after taking over. The concrete bunkers are gone, replaced with actual sand (and they're generally quite consistent and reasonably soft). Some fairways are trying to get a bit wider (notably the par 5 15th), and the trees/forested areas are being maintained with a more active hand -- leaves raked, low branches trimmed. The tree maintainance change speeds play somewhat (those who find themselves in the woods don't spend a lot of time looking for their ball under leaves ... it's either there or it isn't). I'm told that they're expanding the driving range (and moving the putting green) in the next year. Most courses are Blue/White/Red tees. This course is Gold/Black/White (white are the forward tees): Gold 73.7/136 6871 yards, Black 72/132 6506 yards, White 69.2/127 5901 yards. Par 71 (men). There's some debate as to whether this course deserves the (black) 72/132. It's a bit longer than some course, the greens are not huge, and there are significant trees on every hole if you get off-line. Reston is a "planned community", and Reston National was originally planned to be the private course (and Hidden Creek the public one). Of course, the opposite happened, but consensus seems to be that Reston National is a more interesting course (though Hidden Creek has significantly more water to worry about). Kinda pricy ($89 weekend with cart, no discount for walking), but generally in MUCH better shape than the public courses for a few dollars more (Brambleton is $41+$13 cart = $54). Don't count on a 10a Sunday round taking less than 5 hours. Sorry.

Customer Service

Friendly bunch.

Nice course not too hard. No real penalty for playing back tees.

Greens usually in good condition, fairways fairly forgiving.

For the 2001 season, the time intervals for weekends have been changed to straight 9 minutes, instead of the past alternating from 8/9. This should help the problem of the slow pace from the past.

If you like 5.5 to 6 hour rounds play this course, otherwise stay away except weekdays (Mon-Wed mid morning).

The design good. The greens are a challenge. The course is worth playing.

This one I will play again after my last experience.

However, it takes to long to play 6500 yard course. The MARSHALS need to keep players moving...especially the novice golfers!

The course itself is very good.

However, they move foursomes through faster then the course can handle ... apparently not caring about the golfers or what it does to the greens.

Customer Service

The course was well maintained and the greens were in excellent condition. The tee boxes were a little worn out, but not enough to deter from the game.

I play this course 4 or 5 times per months except in the winter. It is generally in excellent condition. The driving range is acceptable, putting green is very good, and the chipping/sand trap area is acceptable. The staff is generally friendly and helpful. Greens fees are average for a public course in this area.

The biggest drawback to this course is the slow play. I have played here for over 12 years and the pace of play has generally been very slow. Probably because of overcrowding and the failure of the marshalls to move the players along. When management decides to stop overcrowding the course and the marshalls do their job properly, the course will be very enjoyable to play.

I like the course because it has a great deal of variety without being extremely difficult for the average golfer. I would play the course even more if the pace of play was faster.

Customer Service

Tee times very easy to schedule.

The design is okay, but there are much better tracks in the area for the same money and by the designers. Ault is a member of the firm Ault Clark, that has designed a variety of courses around the Metro DC / Mid Atlantic area, their designs are worth playing.

This one I will never play again after my last experience.

On a Friday it took 6.5 hours to play, including having to wait while a MARSHAL chatted with someone he knew, they were stopped right beside the green. Another Marshal came up and when I complained about the wait he told me to just go ahead and hit.

I dont know about the rest of you but that kind of advice and 6.5 hours of play, NO THANKS!

Oh yeah, the course itself is okay, again lots of others in the area worth playing first, especially at the fee and with the attitude of the management. They pump foursomes through faster then the course can handle ... apparently not caring about the golfers or what it does to the greens.

Customer Service

Lousy, when I tried to talk to the Manager about the Marshal and slow play, his excuse was that it was early in the season and that I should expect it on a nice day in the spring.
