Shoots in the 80s

CC Country Club is a great little course that is really fun to play. I say "little" because the course is only 6559 yds from the tips and 6105 from the Blues, but don't let the short distance fool you. The wind in Corpus is relentless and any hole into the wind will play much longer, which is how true golf in Scotland is played.

CC country club was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1964. The course design has stayed remarkably current despite advances in technology. Most holes reward a well placed shot yet somehow do not overly penalize average golfers who miss the fairway regularly. This is not to say that missing the fairway is a bed of roses. The rough is the typical thick bermuda that does not have to be very long to cause trouble. Even in 3 inches of grass, the ball will nestle down in the thick thatch and reall try to grab your club as you hit it out.

The greens are bermuda, which is typical of souther courses in warm climates. As one would expect from a private club, the greens were in very good shape and they rolled fairly true considering the inherent influence of the grain found with bermuda greens. The grain seemed to be very influential on these greens, perhaps because they are an older variety of bermuda, though that is just a guess. I had trouble figuring out how to putt these greens, but I still liked them. They had a perfect amount of undulaion, and as you would expect with a great designer, each green was the perfect size and well protected by a variety of hazards and obstacles: sand traps, grass bunkers, trees, water hazards, elevated greens, etc.

If you are familiare wih Corpus Christi, the vegitation is fairly homogeneous with small trees and lots of scrub-brush. The CC Country Club has a very nice variety of trees, many of them are quite large for the area now after 40 years of growth.

Overall, the CC Country Club is a great course for the area. The terrain in Corpus is relatively flat and there is not alot to work with, but RTJ worked his magic on the piece of land and its a lot of fun to play. It has enough challenge for good golfers and is forgiving for average golfers. Don't pass up the opportunity to play this course if you get he chance.

My only criticism of the course is that it is not more of a links layout. There is a definite links influence, but this region with the wind and sand is ideal for a true links course. Then again, who am I to second-guess Robert Trent Jones?

Customer Service

Friendly and courteous, but somewhat lacking for a country club. There was zero water coolers on the course, and we only saw the drink cart once, and it was 97 degrees when we played.

This course reminds me just a little of the original course at Onion Creek in Austin, which was designed around the same time.
