Shoots in the 80s
Donegal Highlands is a great value for the money and could be even more enjoyable. As said in a previous review, the nines are completely different in character. The front nine is wide open and links like with prevailing wind a big factor in play. The back is tree lined on many holes and narrow on a couple. Seventeen is just impossible for an average golfer to par. The one thing that could make the course better is to change their practice of sending people on the back without regard to play on the front. We played the front with no one in sight in front of us only to run into train wrecks on the back due to this practice. Waited on every hole from 11 on. Customer Service The pro shop and course maintenance people are helpful and friendly. The bar service can be curt and abrupt to non regulars. Similar Products Used: Perhaps Links at Spring Church in regards to different nines. |

All in all, Donegal Highlands offers great value. For a cheap public course, conditions are excellent, and the design of the course is entertaining, excepting one hole. The front nine is wide open, the back a bit tighter. Par 5s are all reachable by mid to long hitters (I drive 260 avg and can reach from the back tees), and most of the 4s leave short irons. The greens are humped all over, though, so putting levels the field a good bit. If in doubt, hit it hard inside the cup. Worst part: number 17. The drive is ridiculous from any tee, worst of all from the back tees. You're forced to hit a massive slice to get the ball in play. Trees block any shot starting right, so a draw isn't an option. And the only straight shot available would be a 150 yard lay-up to the ten yards of fairway not blocked by the poor angle, leaving 200 plus into the green. Only play is to aim at the Turnpike and cut the ball as hard as possible. An overcut, though, will end up in a meandering stream. Like I said, it's the worst part of the course and, really, the only black eye you'll find. Customer Service Excellent in the shop; varying in the bar |
