I live 4 hours South of Bandon and had been hearing about the place for years, before I ever took up golf myself. As you can immagine my expectations were pretty high. We played in March (Brrr) and this was also my first experience with links golf.

First of all I was blown away by how rugged the place is. It feels more like a hunting club than a typical golf resort. It gives you the feeling that you are in for an adventure or a quest rather than a leasurely afternoon round.

For a duffer like me to course looks intimidating but plays very fair. I can see that if your goal was to make birdie you would have to pick your shots carefully and hit them on the nose. I enjoyed playing shots I have never tried to hit before (bunt driver) and even managed to move the ball forward out of a bunker with a face at least 20' above me (though not very far).

The greens are big, fast and so hard you are allowed to roll your pull cart over them, but they are also very true.

Playing with a forecaddie was a treat and a necisity for a first timer though I read my own greens.

The place surpassed my expectations. It was different, more raw than I had expected but that made it seem more pure. This is a place to be experienced, not beaten. In addition, while it is not priced like a muni, it is probably one of the best values in golf for the quality of the experience.

Austere as it is, you never want for anything. The staff has a natural way of making you feel welcome without seeming phony like at luxury resorts. The food is as good as the golf and the single malt in the Bunker Bar ends the day on a perfect note.

I played Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes & Bandon Trails on my recent trip. They were all excellent courses, but I thought Bandon Dunes was the most "fair" of the courses. Pacific was a bit too tricked up as were parts of Bandon Trails.

I played all 3 courses in 30-40mph winds which I'm told is a bit more than typical, but it sure made things challenging. I am a 4 handicap and in six rounds I played I was only able to break 80 one time. I was sort of shocked to see that the courses were rated so easy. I guess I could see it with no wind, but with the wind....very tough.

Bandon Dunes is pretty open, with holes playing into, with and cross (both sides) the wind. Pacific was pretty much dead into or dead down wind. I'm told they were specifically designed that way. Trails has a few holes in the trees which could almost be "parkland style" but Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes are definitely both full-bore links courses.

Spectacular views, but probably a once in a lifetime trip for me I wouldn't go back to be tortured on these courses again.

Amazing setting. Pacific Dunes is comparable to Royal County Down in the way the dunes contribute to course routing and the way the gorse defines bunkering. A pure joy to walk. Refined. Just knowing that everyone is there for the exact same reason synergizes the experience. Pace of play was very acceptable. Just got back from a weekend in January 2008 when greeens fees are $75 a round with a $40 replay rate. The courses played beautifully. Bandon Trails greens were outstanding. Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes a little less so but did not detract from the experience or playability. Accommodations were understated yet perfectly matched for the atmosphere that is one the the best experiences in the world of golf. If you are the type of golfer that constantly complains about course conditions, the weather, or likes to take a cart, do the rest of us a favor and STAY HOME!

The fact Ithat I wanted nothing additional at any time during the visit speaks for itself. The course has brought over 600 good paying jobs to the area and the staff sincerely appreciate that fact.

Challenging, amazing layouts

All I ever read about this course is amazing reviews. I have concluded that all of these people are either amazing golfers or have endless amounts of money. This course is not for many; if your a great golfer of very rich, have at it.

The good things: all of the courses are very beautiful and well designed, the ocean views, they are a very big challenge (huge for a 13 handicap), the facilities are nice, the practice facility is great, some of the people are helpful and nice.

The not so nice: these are really tough courses and have very little forgiveness for any mis-hit shots, the fairways are as thin as greens so don't expect your ball to sit up, the prices are out of this world, the caddies are marginal and just add to the cost (some are good, many not), the overall customer service is weak, the food is marginal, it is forever to get there, the weather is iffy most of the time.

So, it has it's moments, but it's hard to understand why these courses are rated so high. There are many others that would exceed these (except for the ocen views on the clear days).

Tough layout (from the back tees). Tough, Scottish-style, bunkers. Wonderful vistas. Great clubhouse. Good restaurant with a "new" McMennimins bar nearby, which was badly needed. Caddies!

Very spendy. There are no golf equipment stores nearby, even in the neighboring towns (nearest), so bring balls or pay the price.

A great course to play and a wonderful addition to the great courses available in Oregon. The weather is a bit of a concern, unless you don't care about playing in the rain. It is the Oregon coast, after all. Not Florida. I HIGHLY recommend getting a caddie, or at least getting 1 for your group (a "fore-caddie"). There are some holes where you will have trouble locating the tee-box, and then the direction from the tee to the green. Also, their green reading skills will be very helpful.
