Shoots in the 70s

Roy below and I seem to have played all the same Reno/Carson Valley courses, and his reviews are generally right on. Wildcreek is perched in the foothills just north of Reno, and if you are on an upper floor of any of the major Reno hotels you can easily see the course. Wildcreek reminds me of my regular local Tacoma WA course, with lots of doglegs, up, down, shotmaking. There are opportunities to use your driver, but strategic placement will get you further on this course. The back nine climbs the foothills, and each turn around the bend to a new teebox brings another great view of Reno. There are plenty of shade trees placed along the path, so even with hot Reno twilight weather you can enjoy a breeze that kicks up in the hills. The highest hole on the back 9 puts you right next to a ridge darkened by a recent brush fire .... and also right next to a magnificent trophy house that looks somewhat like a wooden Darth Vader helmet perched precariosly on a rock outcropping nearby. Wildcreek looks like a typical often/overplayed muni, the tee boxes were small and a bit chewed up, and the fairways were spotty at times ... but the greens ran well, and the fact that each hole offered a quality new visual and shotmaking challenge helped elevate it in my mind. Shooting a 74 and one eagle didn't hurt, either. As one of 7 courses I played in 7 days of twilight golf, I rated this one in the middle ... but certtainly lots of fun for a city course. Two years ago when I was shooting in the 90's I probably wouldn't have liked it as much. I found that there was one specific shot and placement that made each hole work for me ... and a couple of holes with narrow landing areas between water that could be a bit intimidating for higher handicappers. I had to think a lot on this course. It was pretty breezy on the afternoon I played (typical for Reno area), and the wind definitely had to be factored into club selection. Cost a bit more than similar Carson Valley courses, but you pay for the Reno location. All in all, a nice local test of golf, and a good representation of the effort the Reno municipalities have made to keep good quality golf affordable for all.

Customer Service

This is a very nice layout, with lots of diversity. No two holes are the same. Has it all, water, forced carries, sand. Lots, of unusual lies. Holes, 12 and 16 are said, by some to be unfair. They are not. You most keep your ball in the left side of the fairway. Hole 18 has a 200 yard carry, from all tee boxes. A hilly layout with a good mix of target and open golf. Lots of fun. Best played by those who shoot 90 or better, not good for beginners. Down side, are conditions. Not as good as could be. $40 to 49 with cart.

Also, a 9 hole par 3 course. Nice layout. Good for all levels of play.

Decent practice area.

Down side, are conditions. (Not very

Shoot in the 90s

Hilly course with good views of the downtown area. A couple of interesting holes including the 4th (I think) a big uphill par 3 and the 11th with a green you can't see up the hill. Tee boxes and greens were good shape. Don't remember very many tiered greens. Lot's of waste areas, especially in front of the tee boxes, which were nice if you miss hit your tee shots.
Water comes into play on lot's of the holes. The water on the right hand side of the first hole, keep your eye out for a muscrat (I think). Pretty interesting to see this hairy rat thing swimming in the pond!

Being a hilly course, I would not have walked this. Plus, the carts had GPS, so...

Snack shop was good. Pro shop seemed well stocked with everything you'd need. Driving range was grass, not mats.
