Superb course. Duffers won't get frustrated since there aren't many hazards, nor are fairways too narrow (but the merits of the course will be lost upon them). Good golfers will like it for the shot values on almost every hole. Doglegs, traps, and trees are strategically placed to reward smart plays and penalize bad ones. Lots of interesting elevation changes to add challenge. Tiered, sloped greens, so you getting it on the wrong parts will make par a challenge. The only knock is the blind tee shots on a couple holes, not a big fan of that. Still, this is a must play for the SE Michigan area.

Nice layout, hills and big greens. A good workout if you walk, faster if you ride.

Some bunkers hve minimal sand. You can break a sand wedge when it sticks in the bottom. No nine hole price.

A great course, getting better every day. The "U" has finally put some $ back into upkeep in the last 10 years and it has paid off handsomely. Hit it long & straight and you have no problems.

An old time clasic course. I know golfers who took classes at Michigan just to get a chance to play the course. Not a similar hole in the entire 18, with several holes that you will not forget.

Very few areas to lose balls. If you stay out of the stuff in between the 1st and 3rd fairways, and then you avoid the water on #18, you shouldn't lose a ball. Most tee shots are relatively wide open. But your approach shots must be accurate or you will find one of the many traps. Another strength has to be #3. This is a 530 yard par 5 that is one of the most unique holes i've played. It is basically 530 yards straight out, and then a 90 degree turn to the left reveals an elevated green, guarded by trees and traps. Its is virtually impossible to get on in 2, especially since you can't even see the green until you have already hit the ball 500 yards.

The biggest strength is that it only costs students $25 to play ($37 with a cart). For a top course, this is a steal.

One of the few weaknesses is that there are several blind shots off the tee. On #2, if you aren't familiar with the course, you have no idea where the fairway even is. So, its possible to hit the ball exactly where you want to, and for it to be in the rough, in the trap, or even out of bounds. If you play the course, i suggest walking or riding up to the top of these hills and scouting out the hole before you hit. If not for the sake of your shot, at least to make sure the fairway is clear before you hit.

Another weakness is that that the Driving Range is not accesable from the course with a golf cart. It is adjacent to the course, but you must drive your car there.

Beautiful course. Designed by Allister Mckenzie, the same dude who designed Augusta National. Its kept in great condition. There are lots of hackers who come out and play due to the cheap rate for UM students, but you couldn't tell at all by the shape of the course. The greens are very difficult on some holes, but fair. Unlike most courses i've played, the tee areas at this course are always in good shape. As far as playability, the course is fun for most skill levels. There is very little water on the course until you get to #18. That hole is one the most difficult straight holes you'll find anywhere. Its a 458 yard par 4, and your second shot must carry the water. If you aren't 420 after 2 shots, your ball is at the bottom of the lake. To make it worse, they added a bunker about 240 out on the right side of the fairway. If you go in, I dare you to to try to carry the water from that trap. Oh, and if you do try to find your ball in the water, please look for about 10 Titleist distance 100s. They are mine.

The snack shop is pretty good. They make a mean Chicken Salad sandwich. On the downside, they only have Pepsi at the course. No Coca-cola products at all.

Not totally a public course; I was spoiled as a U-M student getting to play it for $20, and it's tough to get on the course if you have no connection to the University.

U of M's course is truly a beautiful course. It's kept in great shape, with a great mix of long and short holes, LOTS of elevation changes, and a TON of sand. Tees are in decent shape; greens are maintained very well and they're a lot tougher than they look with some challenging pin placements. Not very much water. The view of the "Big House" and downtown Ann Arbor from the elevated 18th tee is awesome. If you have a family member who attends or works for the University, definitely a must-play if you're ever in Ann Arbor
