Shoots in the 90s

This course is a mixed bag to me. It's your typical low-end course with most of the grass being the same length (except on the greens, or course). I played it the other day and my tee shot on number one (which is uphill and blind) went about 240 into the right center of the fairway, and the grass was about three inches long. Most of the course is like this. Holes to highlight are number 2, a 275 yard straight par 4 which really makes you decide between risk or reward. The other unusual hole is number 7, which is dead straight, uphill, about 160, which plays like 190. The greens are very nice, but generally small. Overall, the course is very well kept and worth playing every once in a while.

Homewood, also in Ames, is very similar, but has no par 5s and the grass is a little better in the fairways. River View in Estherville is very much like this course. The foliage of each are very similar, with the layout of the holes differing.

Shoots in the 80s

Subtle course, many short par fours and only two tees. greens are fast, lots of roll all around the course. long hitters will have fun trying to get up and down. late summer is the time to hit that 300 yarder on the hardpan. better hit it it straight though. some nice trees make distance a moot point.

overall, a fun, rewarding and improving course. beware of long approaches. bring your A wedge game and make some 3's.

Shoot in the 90s

Condition of golf course could be described as well used, but well respected. This course is a nightmare for slicers, as the fairways are predominantly straight. The number one par 5 is a great start to the course, teeing off over a creek then up a hill to a blind landing. The course changed ownership since I was playing there regularly, and to me, the change seems to be a good one with improvements to the club house and seemingly better course conditions. They do lack any practice facilities, but for the weekend golfer, this course is certainly a favorite.
